Live Updates — Ryan Day Previews Big Ten Championship Game

+ Day and Fields talk about how Fields is playing and feeling. They trust each other.

+ “To win this conference is a huge deal.” It’s been done before but they don’t take it for granted. If you win the B1G championship, a lot of things have gone well and more things can go well.

+ Regarding a Heisman campaign at Ohio State, Day said it kind of speaks for itself. You don’t have to campaign when your performance in a rivalry game speaks for itself. But the other thing is that these guys haven’t played as much as other guys have, so their numbers are skewed. They have all had Heisman moments and all three deserve to go to Ohio State.

+ They won’t hold recruiting spots prior to the December signing day for players who sign elsewhere at schools where coaches leave. The transfer portal has changed things as well and forces them to forecast some things.

+ People didn’t think much of Ohio State before the season. The players deserve more credit for what they have done this season. It’s not just talent, it’s hard work with great discipline and leadership. “I think these kids deserve that.”

+ Everything Wisconsin does on offense is so sound.

+ There is no thought to sitting Justin Fields. “We will use him all 60 minutes.”

+ The three interior offensive linemen have an approach to the game that is off the charts. They’re tough. They finish guys and knock them down. They are the tip of the spear on the offense. Their athleticism up front allows you to do a lot of things.

+ When he sees his players having success in the Michigan rivalry, “It’s as good a feeling as you can possibly have.” But he’s not trying to think back on that right now. “It’s very humbling.”

+ Do you have to be dynamic on offense to win it all now? “I think it definitely helps.” But you still need to be complementary on offense. “If you want to make a run at this thing, you have to be great.”

+ OSU isn’t out recruiting right now while everybody else is. That’s why OSU is calling the players to explain why and the players all understand that it’s a good problem to have. It provides “huge credibility in recruiting.”

+ Regarding asst coaches having head coaching opportunities, that’s one of the reasons you come here. “That’s healthy. It’s good for families.” All he asks is that they make sure they make the finish line first. He doesn’t expect any of that to happen this year.

+ “They kicked out tails the first half on offense.” Wisconsin’s defense had them pretty good. OSU pulled away at the end. It will be another tough game. Wisconsin has adapted.

+ Definitely felt more relief than happiness after beating Michigan. Jeff Hafley mentioned to him after the game about imagining walking through the halls of the Woody with all of the signage about The Game and having to stare at it all year after a loss.

+ Asked about the talk that OSU doesn’t need to win this game to make the playoffs, “all I know is we have to go win this game for a lot of reasons.” That’s the focus. “We just have to win this weekend.”

+ Chase Young played well because he opened up things for his teammates.

+ They regularly send in plays to the Big Ten to be reviewed, such as plays where Chase Young is being held. “I think the referees do a good job. They can’t catch them all.”

+ The games that got them to this point don’t mean anything if they lose to Wisconsin.

+ It will be nice playing indoors for the first time in a while.

+ It will be really tough to beat Wisconsin twice. “This is a very, very well-coached team.” They’ve gotten better as the season has gone on.

+ The plan will not change, they will be redshirting Jonathon Cooper no matter what happens at his position from here on out. “We think it’s the best thing to just hold tight.”

+ You do everything you can to be successful, and running Justin Fields puts them in those successful situations. But there’s a risk that goes with it.

+ He’s been a part of the last couple of recruiting classes, so it’s going to be a bear the last two weeks before signing day, but it’s the new normal. “It will be a race.”

+ Day was a bit numb when he saw Justin Fields go down, trying to figure out the solutions to the issue at hand. Then when he talked to Fields, Fields told him to just put a different brace on it and he’d be fine. So that was a cool thing to be around.

Ohio State Updates — Jeff Hafley, Justin Fields, Jeff Okudah, More

Justin-Fields-postgame-Wisconsin.jpg

Ohio State co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach Jeff Hafley met with reporters on Tuesday. He provided some insights into the Buckeyes’ adjustments on defense against the Wolverines and also previewed this weekend’s matchup against Wisconsin. Also speaking with the media were quarterback Justin Fields, cornerback Jeff Okudah, receiver KJ Hill, and more.

Jeff Hafley

+ On beating Michigan: “I don’t know if I would call it relief. A game like that is why you coach college football. Beyond happy.”

+ Walking past the videos and signs about Michigan, he doesn’t know how he would have done it for the next year if OSU would have lost.

+ The OSU defensive line played really well against Wisconsin last time.

+ Hafley understands the curiosity about his job future, but he won’t get into it.

+ Pete Werner has been really important in this defense’s success. “He’s so versatile and he’s so tough.” He’s fun to be around because he loves football. He asks question. “He’s the type of guy you dream about coaching.”

+ They changed up coverages in the second half. Michigan had a bunch of grouping and packages in the first half that they haven’t shown, so they had to respond to it.

+ It’s how you install your defense that determines whether players can do it or not.

+ Adjustments are all part of the game. If you wait to do it at halftime, you have no chance. You have to adjust throughout the game. It’s a credit to the players.

+ Amir Riep got better and better during the game. His performance is one of the reasons college football is great. He had the game of his life in a tough moment.

+ They had to move things around all game long to find spots where players were comfortable. “I believe Jeff Okudah is the best corner in the country.” He’s as talented as any corner Hafley has been around. He is taking guys out of the game. “I’d be disappointed if Jeff didn’t win [the Thorpe Award] next week.”

+ The defense didn’t flinch when Michigan was having success. It says so much about the players to have gone through that in the biggest game of the season and step up and respond.

+Marcus Hooker has been practicing hard and well, so he deserved to play last week. It just so happened it came in a very big game. “He almost had a pick.”

+ Damon Arnette plays with the confidence you need in a great corner. He’s played with one hand all year. “I just appreciate him so much.” “You want to talk about toughness? That’s what this place is all about.” “Damon’s good, he’s just got to deal with the pain, and he has. I appreciate him.”

+ Michigan had multiple guys dealing with Chase Young, which allowed other players to step up, especially when Michigan started throwing the ball every down.

+ The OSU offense and defense work well together. If they can get three-and-outs and get the ball back to the offense, Day stays aggressive and it just creates a cycle.

+ The DBs have done such a great job of not having miscommunications, so when they happened against Michigan they addressed it quickly and got it fixed.

+ “Every game you evolve a little bit.” You can’t look at everything when it comes to Wisconsin. You have to stick to what you do best, just as they will.

+ “I love being around [JK Dobbins].”

+ He wishes they would go with one blocker on Chase Young every time, but knowing there are double-teams, they have to scheme it to take advantage of those decisions.

+ Teams have tried to do what Michigan did against Chase Young, but Michigan did it better. But he was still getting pressure and hitting the quarterback. “I don’t think they stopped Chase — I think they felt Chase.”

+ It’s an honor to be a Broyles Award finalist. It’s an honor for the entire staff.

+ Ryan Day deserves to be the Big Ten coach of the year. First-year head coach, goes undefeated through the regular season. Had adversity he needed to handle. The way his players play for him and the way he treats him, throw out the records, he’s the best coach in the country.

+ Ohio State’s offense is explosive. They can throw it, run it, the QB can keep it, and they can score really fast. If you take the explosive plays away, then Day’s offense can just pound on you. He doesn’t care.

DaVon Hamilton

+ Can they do better against Wisconsin this time? There are always things they can improve upon.

+ Putting up numbers this year? Just blessed to be able to do that. He works hard on it every week and during the offeseason.

+ On Jonathan Taylor: “He’s really quick and he reads the holes well.”

+ How have they stayed focused each week? Mental toughness and mental discipline. Comes from the coaches and the preparation all year long.

+ He had no sack goals for the season. He was just trying to be as good a player as possible for his team.

+ When they first heard Ryan Day was taking over, they were excited about it. He’s done some spectacular things this year. He made the transition easier.

Austin Mack

+ When he saw Justin Fields down and hurt, Mack knew Chugs would be able to come in and hold it down. But it was just a little bit scary at the time.

+ It will be exciting to play indoors finally.

+ His season has been a ride up and down, but the Buckeyes are 12-0 and he’s done everything he can for this team. Being able to score against Michigan was great.

+ Playing out of the elements will be beneficial for the offense. They should be able to score some points.

+ Ryan Day is a great person. They talk all the time. There is an open-door policy to come in and hang out. “As a coach, he’s a fighter.” He’s inspirational. “I love being able to play for this game. He’s a great coach.”

+ The weather has hampered the passing game a bit this season. “It makes it challenging.” But with no weather, it’s great. “It’s going to be fun.”

+ This is Ryan Day’s program. “It’s crazy to see how he’s developed in his first year as [head] coach.”

+ It’s great to be undefeated against Michigan. “It’s bragging rights. I love it. It’s dope.”

Starting slow is not an option Saturday. This one time the less snaps Fields has to play under duress is important Saturday. He can play the whole game but we need to get a lead where he knows he doesn’t need to put himself at risk.

more worried about Cephus? He seems like a highlight reel every weekend when I catch glimpses of their games.
Cephus had three catches for 57 yards with a long of 35 yards in the regular season game. AJ Taylor had two catches for 29 yards, one of which was the 26-yard TD in the 3rd which was their only score of the game. So their two main WRs had a total of five catches for 96 yards. Color me unconcerned about their passing attack.

The UW OL and DL were completely overmatched the first go around.

They can't run. They can't protect their QB. They can't stop the OSU run and they can't cover OSU athletes when required to play an even game on defense (can't cheat for run because of rain).

What exactly in the fuck are they going to do differently to mitigate being inferior along both lines?

Perfect trap game.

1. Getting up for the game can be tough.

We are coming off of two straight weeks that meant more. (PSU loss costs us the Division and the Conference Championships). Not only time for a deep breath but we are beat up from a very physical game.

We don't need this win to make the playoff.

No matter what you tell yourself you "know" that you can handle a team you already beat by 31. Do you really need to do that last rep?

2. Rematches are a coin toss.

I did some research on this several years ago when the only rematches were in bowl games. The team that won the first game was right around 50% in winning the second game. (So much for the theory of "proving it on the field.")

When you win the first one the tendency is to do things the same. The losers are prepared for that while throwing as much new stuff at you as they can come up with. (Just saying tendency - not saying we wont mix things up.)

The last time OSU had a rematch was 1975. We beat UCLA by 21 during the season. Went into the Rose Bowl undefeated and ranked #1. We lost by 13. That's a 34 point swing. And that game was for a national championship that we didn't win.

3. Our QB is not 100% and playing with an injury that creates greater risk of further damage. Just sayin.

This team is special. My prediction is still that we cover the spread. The dry track could lead to a huge blowout.

But I am not putting any money out there.

I assume the players from Wisconsin know the tOSU is the better team and odds are stacked against them . Chryst and his coaches are going to have to do a masterful sales job to get the team to buy all in ..,,Harbaugh has failed to do this yet and I would be glad to give him another 10 years.
