10 Big Ten teams Bowl eligible?

Looks like the Big Ten will have 10 teams that are bowl eligible. They have 6 already, and could easily have 4 more. Indiana needs 1 win and should get it vs. Ball St. on Saturday. Northwestern needs 1 win and I like their chances with 2 home games vs. Iowa and Indiana. Iowa needs 2 wins and plays Minny and W. Michigan at home, and the aforementioned Northwestern in Evanston. Michigan St. is the only one that might not make it. They have tsun, Purdue, and Penn St. left on the docket. Hopefully, they win one of those for Dantonio.

So, my question is, who gets shut out of a Bowl game if the Big Ten has 10 bowl eligible teams?

Through 8 weeks...........(remaining schedule)

Bowl Eligible Teams in the Big Ten:
Ohio State
Michigan
Penn State
Wisconsin
Purdue

Teams 1 Win Away from being Bowl Eligible:
Illinois (vs. Ball St, @ Minn, @ tOSU, vs. N'Western)
Northwestern (@ Purdue, vs. Iowa, vs. Indiana, @ Illinois)
Indiana (@ Wisc, vs. Ball St, @ N'Western, vs. Purude)
Michigan State (@ Iowa, vs. scUM, @ Purdue, vs. Penn St)

Teams Still With an Outside Chance:
Iowa (vs. Mich St, @ N'Western, vs. Minn, vs. W Mich)

No Chance In Hell:
Minnesota (@ scUM, vs. Illinois, @ Iowa, vs. Wisc)

Bowl Eligible Teams in the SEC:
South Carolina
Kentucky
Alabama

Teams 1 Win Away from being Bowl Eligible:
Florida (vs. Georgia, vs. Vandy, @ South Car, vs. FAU, vs. Florida St)
Georgia (vs. Florida, vs. Troy, vs. Auburn, vs. Kentucky, @ Ga Tech)
Auburn (vs. Miss, vs. Tenn Tech, @ Georgia, vs. Alabama)

Teams 2 Wins Away from being Bowl Eligible:
Tennessee (vs. South Car, vs. La Lafayette, vs. Arkansas, vs. Vandy, @ Kentucky)
Vanderbilt (vs. Miami (OH), @ Florida, vs. Kentucky, @ Tenn, vs. Wake Forest)
Arkansas (vs. Fla Int'l, vs. South Car, @ Tenn, vs. Miss St, @ LSU)
Mississippi State (@ Kentucky, vs. Bama, @ Arkansas, vs. Miss)

No Chance in Hell:
Mississippi (@ Auburn, vs. N'West St, vs. LSU, @ Miss St)

So really, every team in the Big Ten with the exception of Minnesota has a chance or is already Bowl Eligible. If Iowa doesn't win today, I think they'll easily win their last 3 games. On to the SEC.....All the teams with 1 win away should be able to win atleast 1 of their remaining. The teams with two wins away, all of them has a chance of NOT making it. They still have a tough road ahead of them. So the Big Ten has an excellent chance of having more bowl eligible teams than the SEC. However, in SEC fan's eyes, it will show the "strength of the SEC because they just beat up on eachother"....but I guess the Big Ten doesn't.

I posted this yesterday in the "More ammo vs. the SEC" thread

But that doesn't answer my question, now does it? :wink2:

P.S. add the Illini to your eligible list. :)

I posted that prior to yesterday's finals bub.

I don't see Michigan State making it.....I don't think they'll win a game the rest of the year, unless they give scUM a run. If 9 teams get in and they only allow 8 to play in bowls.....I'll say Indiana gets snubbed.

Unfortunately, I don't see Sparty getting in either. Do the Bowls just get to pick and one team gets left out, or is there a formula? You would think Northwestern would get left out based on having the smallest fan base.

I think from the B10 you see something like this:

1. OSU to BCS
2. tsun to cap 1
3. PSU to Outback
4-5 Purdue/UW for Alamo and Sun Bowl
6. GMAC Illinois

that will probably leave IU and NU as Bowl eligible but at large for some other bowl of which I have no idea.

That means our SEC matchups could be tsun vs UT and PSU vs UGA(assuming LSU is the champ and in the BCS). I'll take our chances with either one of those matchups..

Looks good to me with possibly MSU sneaking in past someone

Maybe I'm crazy, but the #3 team in the BCS, LSU, should be somewhere on this list

Ideal Situation for Big Ten

OSU to BCS
Michigan will get a Capital One Card
Purdue will go to the Outback
Illinois will remember the Alamo
Wisconsin will see some Champs Sports
Penn State will get some Insights
Northwestern will visit the Motor City

What Is Almost More Likely

-Penn State loses at Michigan State, because Dantonio will get MSU fired up to win the final game and, thus, make a bowl game.
-Northwestern, with the conference record being higher, jumps Penn State for Insights.

Teams Without Left Over Tie-Ins

Iowa, Michigan State, and Indiana are gonna have some weird situation. Iowa will have the advantage over Michigan State and Indiana, as Iowa will have a better in-conference record.

This could have been so different if Michigan State had just taken out Iowa and Northwestern, as they were supposed to. They are a stronger team than this, but unfortunately, they are hitting a major part of their schedule...

Yeah if they can pull one out vs tsun, purdue or PSU they'd at least be 6-6 with a fan base that should be willing to travel a bit after not Bowling in a while.

That whole gaggle of teams 1 win away is a mess. Most it can be is 2 of NU, IU and MSU and if all 3 make it to 6-6 I see disapointment in NU's future.

Its got nothing to do with head to head competition. Bowl selection is done in a backroom over a table and teams who can deliver the most fans get the better Bowls. No way in this universe the Insight Bowl is going to want NU over PSU regardless of record.

Also, I'd say that there is no way we want the #3 B10 team to be Purdue. I know they looked bad Saturday night but PSU is our best team to send to Tampa. Purdue is a complete fraud. Let them go to the Sun Bowl and shoot it out with a Pac 10 team.

We have 7 tie-ins this year, and the Poinsettia Bowl has an at large spot. So, we need some other conferences to not meet their requirements for everyone to go. I really want the Hoosiers to "play 13" for Hep. Would be a nice story.

Unfortunately Jaxbuck, the Sun Bowl does not have a bowl tie-in with the Big Ten. They almost have a tie-in with 3 conferences that project to have teams to send there.

Purdue's fans are old, and they don't travel well (Maryland had double their amount of fans last year at their bowl game). For the record.

If I had to choose the teams by their ability, I'd easily put it at this:

Ohio State in BCS
Michigan in Capital
Penn State in Outback
Purdue vs. Texas Tech in the Alamo Bowl would just be fun to watch, honestly.
Let Wisconsin take care of an ACC team handily.
Let Illinois beat on a weak Big 12 team.
Have our #7 take care of a MAC team.

If it ends up OSU 12-0, Michigan 9-3, Penn State 9-3, Purdue 9-3, Wisconsin 8-4, Illinois 8-4, Northwestern 7-5, I can easily see this.

Purdue vs. Penn State is a key game this coming weekend.
