Turner hears from six schools
? By Hugh Kellenberger | Tuesday, June 16, 2009

Spencer Turner, South?s top shooter and a rising junior, heard from nine coaches at six schools during the first day they could call him.

The NCAA has set June 15 as the first day college coaches can call rising juniors. Previously, they could call Turner?s coaches or he could call them.

Three calls came from Wisconsin, and two from Ohio State. Michigan also called, as did IPFW, Ball State and Dayton.

Brandon Miller from Ohio State was the first to call Turner from Columbus, Ohio. Miller played at New Castle and later at Butler, so he and Turner have a shared experience concerning basketball in the state of Indiana.

Later, head coach Thad Matta called Turner and told him that Ohio State wants to bring in a shooter in 2011.

?He just wanted me to get to hear his voice and just told me to working hard and, at the end, make the right decision,? Turner said.

Turner was invited to Ohio State?s elite camp, but may not be able to attend because of prior obligations.

Wisconsin and Ohio State have yet to offer Turner, but the fact both head coaches called Turner seems to indicate the schools? interest in the 6-foot-3 shooter.

Kentucky HoopFest - day one

Spencer-Turner0409-728766-720505.jpg

I took in a bunch of games at the Kentucky HoopFest on the opening day.

Not a great day of matchups - will be better tomorrow - but still some good teams and a lot of coaches in the house to watch the prospects.

Event continues through Sunday at KFEC, Hoops and Basketball Academy.

?Best performance of the day that I saw was from Bloomington South's Spencer Turner (photo), who had eight three-pointers and scored 28 points as Indiana Elite One rolled in its opening game of the event. Turner said he is hearing most from Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan and noted his "relationship with Indiana is growing." Indiana University commitment Matt Carlino also had a solid showing in the game with some nifty passing.

?Among the college coaches in attendance was Indiana's Tom Crean and Tim Buckley, Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Xavier's Chris Mack and Butler's Brad Stevens. Some of the top assistant coaches I saw were from Ohio State, Iowa, Illinois, UNLV, Purdue, Xavier and Colorado.

HOOSIER GUARD GETTING ATTENTION

Spencer Turner earned honorable mention All-State honors as a freshman. As a sophomore, he helped Bloomington (Ind.) South to an undefeated state championship season. Now, the 6-4 junior guard is getting all of the attention.
Turner said his phone rang off the hook on the first day coaches could call juniors, and he has been getting the most interest from Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan.

"I try and stay in touch with all of the coaches," Turner said. "Wisconsin and Ohio State are pretty interested in me and are talking about 2011 spots they have open. Both have said they have a spot that I could fill. I really like all the schools that are interested in me. It's just a great deal for me."

One of the schools that has increased its interest level is Indiana. Turner said he attended IU's elite camp in June and has talked with IU's Crean several times.

"Coach Crean told me to call whenever I need to and they said I could come and play in open gym," Turner said. "We're getting closer."

Meanwhile, Turner is playing for the Indiana Elite One AAU team and has a stellar showing Thursday at the Kentucky HoopFest, scoring 28 points on eight three-pointers. His highest number of three-pointers this spring/summer has been 11.

Q&A: Spencer Turner
July 31

Spencer Turner is one of the top basketball prospects in basketball prospects in the state of Indiana. The 6-foot-3, 180 junior-to-be being recruited by several of the nations top programs, including IU, Purdue and Ohio State. I caught up with Turner recently at an AAU tournament.

Johnston: What have you been working on this summer?

Turner: I've been working on my ball handling. Everyone thinks I'm just a shooter but I've really been working on that. I've also been working on getting quicker, faster and stronger. I'm also working on my defense and shooting on the move, instead of just spotting up and shooting. Everyone knows mr as an outside shooter, so I feel like I need to prove that I can handle the ball a littler bit.

Johnston: How did last season go for you?

Turner: It went well. We actually ended up winning the state championship. Jordan Hulls was on my team and that always helps when you have the best player in the state on your team. I felt I did pretty well. I averaged about 12 points per game. I also had Dee Davis and he is a very good player as well.

Johnston: What schools have shown the most interest?

Turner: IPFW has offered. A lot of Big 10 schools are showing interest. I've been getting a lot of calls from Wisconsin, Ohio State, Illinois, Michigan, Purdue and Minnesota.

Johnston: Do you have a favorite?

Turner: No not really. Right now I'm just trying to stay open. The process has been a lot of fun.

Johnston: Are you planning on taking any visits or going to any elite camps?

Turner: I have actually taken a lot of visits. I've been to Wisconsin, Purdue, Ohio State and I went to Michigan for a visit and to their elite camp. I met with their coaches. It was actually one of the best camps I've gone to. I've also been to Indiana's elite camp and I really liked it also. I really liked coach (John) Beilein and coach (Tom) Crean.
