'11 KY C Zach Price (Louisville Verbal)

Well, in the past 10 or so years the top basketball players from St. Edwards have all gone somewhere other than OSU, but for the most part it hasn't been UM/MSU reaping the benefits. Steve Logan and Sam Clancy were teammates there in the late 90s on a phenomenal team & both went on to become excellent college players ... at Cincinnati and Southern Cal respectively. Then there was Jawad Williams, who went to UNC for four very good years (another great college player). Delvon Roe did opt for MSU, but as you can see, the top basketball guys for the past 10 years have been going anywhere but OSU, not just MSU or UM.

Since I am originally from Cleveland and went to a Cleveland public school, I can tell you that this has been happening for decades. Ohio State just hasn't gotten much love in the Cleveland area when it comes to the parochial schools. We have gone a few guys from St. Ignatius and St. Joseph's but when I went to school there were powerhouse football programs such as Cleveland Cathedral Latin and Cleveland Benedictine. Those schools sent a couple kids to Ohio State but for the most part they went to other universities out of state.

Zach Price (
6-foot-8.5, 8-foot-11 reach) ? A long lefty, Price's go-to move is a reliable jumper with his strong hand. Still rough around the edges and not adept at scoring over his left shoulder, he is an intriguing prospect with his athleticism and length. Price also plays with a solid motor as a defender and rebounder.

Ohio center commits to Cards
6-10 Price: Pitino a ?big factor'

By Jody Demling ? [email protected] ? September 8, 2009

Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward center Zach Price told The Courier-Journal on Tuesday night that he has committed to UofL, picking the Cardinals over Ohio State and Michigan.

?There's no other school for me,? Price said. ?I came (to Louisville) in June and felt it was a very, very good school and situation for me. But I didn't know for sure.

?The second visit confirmed it.?

The 6-foot-10, 220-pound Price averaged 15 points and eight rebounds a game as a sophomore. He's ranked as the No.38 player in the '11 class by Scout.com and No.66 by Rivals.com.

Price said coach Rick Pitino was ?a huge factor? in his making a commitment and said he has also built a strong relationship with assistant coach Steve Masiello.

?I felt very comfortable there,? Price said. ?I was (at the football game on Saturday), and we were tailgating and taking pictures, and coach Pitino said, ?Come stand next to me, I'm going to be your coach.' My high school coach (Eric Flannery) is like that, and it just kind of rang a bell.?

2011 Cleveland big man commits to Louisville

Zach Price, the top-rated big man in Ohio in the class of 2011, is off the board. He committed to Louisville tonight, according to The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky.

The 6-foot-9 junior from Lakewood St. Edward chose the Cardinals over Ohio State and Michigan State.

Ohio State was thought by some to have been at the top of Price's list this spring, but because coaches were prevented by an NCAA rule change from watching AAU tournaments in April, he was under-exposed nationally. That changed in June and July.

?I?m keeping my options open," he told Scout.com after the Nike Hoop Jamboree in June. "People think I?m all Ohio State and thinking I?m going to Ohio State, but I?m keeping my options open and looking at all of the schools to see which one fits me.?

Ohio State may have backed off after that. Last month, Price said in another interview with Scout that Florida, Oklahoma, Michigan State and Louisville were the schools recruiting him the hardest. He made an official visit to Louisville last weekend with other 2011 recruits, including point guard Marquis Teague of Indianapolis.

A question worth pondering, though, is whether Price lost interest in Ohio State more than vice versa. He plays in the same AAU program, the King James Shooting Stars, as 2010 guard Cameron Wright of Cleveland Benedictine, who had committed to Ohio State a year ago only to have his scholarship offer pulled by coach Thad Matta last spring. Word since then is that Matta's move has created hard feelings with some in the Cleveland basketball community.

St. Edward High School basketball player James Price leaving program for Louisville: Notes from LeBron James Skills Academy
Elton Alexander, The Plain Dealer, July 06, 2010 6:02 p.m.

AKRON, Ohio - A bit of news, a bit of recruiting movement, but no dunks.

On the news side James Price, the 6-11 center ranked No. 66 in the nation by Scouthoops.com and No. 72 by Rivals.com, said Tuesday he is packing his bags, leaving St. Edward High for the city of horses and cardinals, Louisville, where he orally committed prior to his junior season.

"I'm moving there," he said following a hard 90-minute session of drills at the LeBron James Skills Academy at Akron's Rhodes Arena. "I'll be moving by the end of this month."

Price said he does not know what high school he will be attending, but is excited about the change.

"I'm looking forward to it," said Price, who averaged 11.2 points and seven rebounds. "I don't feel I was able to develop much at St. Edward. I don't feel, if I stayed there, I would be getting any better. When I get into the AAU circuit, or I get into these camps, I'm able to feel free. I don't feel hindered by anything.

"The word's gotten around [in Louisville]. It's crazy to see how much love is down there."

Said St. Edward coach Eric Flannery, "We haven't seen Price all summer. Talking to his family [last week], they told me they wanted to move closer to prepare him for Louisville. We have moved on without him since the summer.

"Obviously we have our history with big guys and we've developed quite a few. The last 15 years we've sent 8-9 big guys to Division I [colleges]. That's their own personal issue."

Don't know what happened behind the scenes, but what Price said was a large cheap shot and low blow at St. Ed's imo. Flannery has taken round mounds like Pritchard and turned them into Big Ten caliber players, not to mention he's done a fine job coaching players like Roe, Williams, Clancy, and Logan.

Either way, even if he was leaving, there was no need to take this shots publicly. It's high school ball, you can't expect the competition that AAU will bring you. I just expected a little more out of him.
