*6-foot-9 Khem Birch, who recently transferred to Notre Dame Prep, picked up three more offers today. Birch, who left Winchendon about a month ago, picked up offers from West Virginia, Ohio State and Pittsburgh. Wondering what the connection between Birch and Pitt is? Former Providence assistant Pat Skerry now has a job with the Panthers. Birch thinks very highly of coach Skerry. Could Khem Birch be bound for the Steel City?

Khem Birch was practically born to play basketball, which may explain why he hated it so much.

As a kid growing up in Pierrefonds, Birch took a liking to football, his long frame making him an ideal target as a wide receiver.

But finally, after ignoring what appeared to be his destiny for as long as he could, Birch decided four years ago to switch to the round ball.

"I used to hate basketball," Birch said. "I thought I was going to play football my whole life. I was just better at basketball."

At 6-foot-9 and freakishly athletic, Birch, 17, is the third-rated prospect in the U.S. on ESPN's class of 2012 recruiting list as he prepares to enter his junior year at Notre Dame Prep in Massachusetts. Considered the top shot blocker in his class, Birch is "a highlight dunk waiting to happen," says ESPN Recruiting director Paul Biancardi.

Birch has seven big-time NCAA Division-1 programs who have already offered him a scholarship for the 2012-13 school year -Ohio State, West Virginia, Iowa, Pitt, Texas, Arizona and Providence -with more undoubtedly to come.

old news, but relevant

"The US always has something to lose," said Canadian forward Khem Birch of Fitchburg (Mass.) Notre Dame after putting up a 25-point, 20-rebound performance. "We're Canada, we have nothing to lose."
Not that Birch (Rivals No. 9 for 2012) - or his teammates - had any intention of doing anything other than serving USA East humble pie coated in maple syrup.

Pittsburgh has received a commitment from one of the elite big men in the Class of 2012.

Khem Birch will play for Pittsburgh when the 2011-12 season kicks off.
Scout.com

Canadian Khem Birch, ranked fourth in the junior class by Scout.com and No. 2 in the nation by ESPN.com, gave Panthers coach Jamie Dixon a verbal pledge on Wednesday.

"I chose Pittsburgh because I really feel comfortable with Coach (Pat) Skerry and Coach Dixon, and I feel that they can help me develop," Birch told FOXSports.com

The 6-foot-9, 200-pound Birch, who hails from Quebec, spent last season at Winchendon School (Mass.) and has transferred to nearby Notre Dame Prep this year.

Birch is a long and extremely athletic frontline player who can change the game on the defensive end with his shot-blocking ability. If his ranking holds up, he?d be the highest regarded player ever to sign with the Panthers.

"Khem?s long-term goal is to be a pro,? Notre Dame Prep coach Ryan Hurd told FOXSports.com "Coach Dixon has done a terrific job developing pros, and he?s also made it clear the door is always open for Khem to return and finish getting his degree.?

"He hasn?t even scratched the surface,? added Expressions coach Todd Quarles, who runs Birch?s summer league. "He?s got so much upside and wants to be great.?

New Pittsburgh assistant Pat Skerry, who was hired from Providence in the offseason, was key in the recruitment of Birch.

"Providence was the leader in the clubhouse when Coach Skerry was there,? Hurd said. "And when he went to Pittsburgh, it was a no-brainer for Khem.?

"He just felt comfortable with Skerry and Coach Dixon. Khem is a special player. He?s a fantastic player and kid, and it?s tough to coach him sometimes because it?s impossible to get angry at him.?

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The big news Saturday at the National Prep Showcase wasn't necessarily the action being played on the floor, but instead a major development on the recruiting scene.

Khem Birch (Montreal/Notre Dame Prep), the No. 2-ranked prospect in the Class of 2012, has decided to forgo his post-graduate year by signing a letter of intent with the University of Pittsburgh.

While word of Birch's commitment began to swirl around the gym at Albertus Magnus College by midday, it wasn't until early evening when his mother, Wendy Sparks, confirmed the news to ESPN.

"He's a Panther," Sparks said. "Khem is ecstatic and we are all so happy.
