Evaluation

June, 2009: This super athletic guard is more of a shooting guard than a point at this stage of his game. He is a highlight waiting to happen in transition or in the half court with any clear paths to the rim. Johnson has good strength which allows him to get into the lane and elevate over smaller defenders with ease. He is an excellent defensive rebounder that can start the fast break or slow down and get his team into offense. He can drive draw and kick when he draws a second defender but at times is loose with the ball which results in a turnover. He would need to tighten up his handle to see more action at the point but he is more than capable. He is a good not great three point shooter and has the body and athletic ability to defend all three perimeter positions. Johnson is a sure fire high major combination guard with off the charts upside.

April, 2009: Johnson is a big time athletic combo-guard. He has excellent size and strength for his age. He can sprint the lane in transition or rebound and start the break with ease. He is an improved three point shooter that shot extremely well. He can knock down the open three off the catch or he can dribble up to the line and knock it down off the dribble. His release and follow through look good and seems to have confidence in his stroke. He is a good ball handler and passer as well. He can beat his man and shoot the mid range jumper in the lane. Johnson is also an above the rim finisher in transition with a clear path. He is also a lob catcher on the break. Johnson is more of a shooting guard but his point guard skills are developing rapidly. He does a great job at finding the open man in drive, draw and kick situations. He is also strong enough to finish through contact once he gets deep into the lane. Johnson is a terrific all around guard with a bright future.

June, 2008: Nick is a super athletic combo guard. He is great at getting in the lane and elevating over his opponents for a short jumper or lay in. He has a solid body and a developing perimeter game. He tends to lean on his athleticism a little too much at times and needs to continue to develop his skill set in order to improve. He is a decent shooter with range to 17 feet. He is definitely more of a 2 than a 1 but with his athletic ability he could be a difference maker if he ever developed into a point guard. Nick is a tough competitor that can rebound and defend effectively. He is a top 50 prospect in the 2011 class nationally.

May, 2008: Johnson has progressed nicely since the Pangos Frosh-Soph camp in the fall. He has a stocky frame with fairly long arms and solid overall length for the two-guard. He's an outstanding athlete with considerable bounce - not surprising considering his dad is the legendary leaper Joey Johnson (Los Angeles/Banning and Arizona State). He plays the game with skill and savvy well beyond his years. His jump shot is tight and he's always on balance (understands the jump-stop). He handles the ball effectively with either hand and he's a very sound passer as well. His court demeanor is great and he never seems to get rattled under pressure. He still needs to get better at getting to the rim at the bounce, but I'm sure that will come in due time.

Nick Johnson is a 6-foot-3, 195 pound combo guard from Gilbert (AZ) with phenomenal athleticism. Johnson, a 2011 standout, is being courted by a who?s who of top programs, including Louisville, Kentucky, Ohio State, Oregon State, Stanford, Arizona, Gonzaga, Arizona State, USC and UNLV. Confirmed offers as of this writing are from the two Arizona programs, Ohio State and Gonzaga. Look for Johnson?s stock to explode now that he?s immersed in Mike Peck?s program at Findlay. He?ll get stronger, play harder, and become a leader next year with Cory Joseph leaving for college.

Hoop stars Carson, Johnson may go to same college

Mesa's Jahii Carson and Findlay Prep's Nick Johnson got along so well as roommates during last weekend's Skills camp in Chicago that they're talking about going to the same college together.

There were four invite-only skills camps going on at the same time in Chicago. Carson and Johnson were part of the Deron Williams camp that featured the nation's top point guards.

Carson, an Arizona Republic All-Arizona performer last season, has decommitted from Oregon State.

Johnson, a 6-foot-2 guard, spent his first two years in high school at Gilbert Highland, before leaving last summer to play for national basketball powerhouse Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev.

"We've been close for a long time," Carson said. "We want to stay in the Pac-10. Our moms are close and we want them to be able to see us play."

Carson said he will play in the LeBron James invite-only camp in Akron, Ohio, next week, before turning his attention to the July showcase tournaments during which the college coaches can watch him play.

He said he is in no hurry to commit. He said he would like to take some recruiting trips.

Mesa coach Shane Burcar said Carson is being recruited from schools from the Big East to the Pac-10.

"He's wide open," Burcar said.

Carson said he likes both Arizona and Arizona State. He said a key for him will be how he clicks with the coaches.
