Q & A with Adam Woodbury: Iowa is ?definitely in the mix?
by Scott Dochterman :: UPDATED: 8 August 2011

Incoming Sioux City East senior post Adam Woodbury picked up a scholarship offer from North Carolina this afternoon. Iowa is among seven Big Ten schools that have offered Woodbury a scholarship.

Woodbury, who stands 7 feet, averaged 18.5 points and 12.4 rebounds a game last year. He also plays AAU basketball on the same team as Iowa commit Mike Gesell and North Carolina commit Marcus Paige.

Woodbury spoke with me just hours after receiving his North Carolina offer:

North Carolina?s coaches had watched you play all summer. Was the scholarship offer expected?

?It was pretty unexpected, actually. It?s an honor to be recruited by UNC and an offer from Roy Williams.?

You?ve had several accolades and plenty of attention from Division I coaches this summer at various AAU camps. What?s this summer been like for you?

?It?s been a very exciting time in my life. I couldn?t ask for anything else. I just try to stay humble and work as hard as I can every time I?m on the court and prove to the coaches that they?re watching me for the right reasons.?

What have you worked on this summer to prepare you for the next level?

?I?m working on everything from my post moves, to my mid-range to my jump shot, my free throws. I?m trying to get stronger. I?m trying to run the court even harder. I?ve been trying to do everything.?

What?s been your connection with the Iowa basketball program?

?I received my basketball offer when I was in ninth grade, I believe. Ever since then they?ve told me I?ve been a top priority, both staffs. Coach (Fran) McCaffery has been on me since the day he too over. He?s definitely been in there recruiting me hard. I have a lot of respect for him.?

What?s your timeline?

?I?m going to make my decision by the start of my high school (basketball) year. I don?t think it would be fair to drag this out for my teammates. I?m trying to give them all my focus to try and win a state title.?

Where do you plan to visit?

?I haven?t made any decisions yet. I?ll be looking to do that in the next month or so.?

Has the recruiting process become overwhelming at times?

?It?s been the funnest time of my life. I haven?t seen a lot of people from my hometown in a long time. It?s good to get home and see some people. I?ve traveled the country; I?ve met a lot of great people. I?ve got to play what I love to do for the last few months of my life and actually get acknowledged for it. I couldn?t ask for anything else, and I?m just excited to keep it rolling.?

What are your thoughts on Iowa?

?They?re definitely in the mix. They?ve been in on me the longest. They?re still recruiting me very hard. Let?s see what happens.?

What do you think of Coach McCaffery?s style of play?

?I definitely enjoy playing, getting up and down. I?ve watched a lot of Iowa games, but the previous year on the team there, I didn?t watch a lot of games. But the games I?ve watched of theirs, I?ve really been excited about the offense he?s running. He says they can incorporate me really well.?

Which other Big Ten schools have offered you a scholarship?

?I?ve had seven offers from the Big Ten ? Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio State, Purdue ? Illinois recruited me lot when I was younger but they stopped recently.?

Does AAU teammate Mike Gesell?s decision to play at Iowa affect your decision going forward?

?I?m just taking it all in right now. I?m excited for him; this is his day. He?s a heck of a teammate, I love being around him the four years I?ve gotten to know him. He?s a great player, a great person. I wish him all the luck.

Newest Hawkeye Gesell to play recruiter
Craig DeVrieze | Posted: Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Few in college basketball can beat Roy Williams to the recruiting punch, but Mike Gesell is game to give it a go.

On Monday, Gesell gave third-year Iowa coach Fran McCaffery his first top-100 Hawkeyes recruit when the South Sioux City (Neb.) point guard committed to report to Iowa City in the fall of 2012.

Gesell would love to make it a four-star two-fer by convincing Adam Woodbury ? a 7-foot-1 center from nearby Sioux City (Iowa) East High and his teammate on the AAU All-Iowa Attack ? to head east with him.

?I am definitely going to be recruiting him,? Gesell said Tuesday. ?He is a good friend of mine and also a very good player. Hopefully we can keep it going.?

It won?t be easy. Just this week, Woodbury, whose stout summer includes having won MVP honors at the NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville, Va., added a firm offer from North Carolina?s Williams to a growing list that started with Iowa four years back.

?I don?t know,? Gesell said when asked if he could outrecruit the Tar Heels head man. ?But I am going to try.?

McCaffery almost certainly will be trying, too, and, should he succeed, a Gesell-Woodbury combination could help make Carver-Hawkeye Arena something it hasn?t been since George Raveling was on the Hawkeyes? bench in the 1980s.

?I think it would establish Iowa to a lot of kids as a destination school in the Big Ten area,? said Brian Snow, a national recruiting analyst for Scout.com. ?If you ask a kid growing up who is Roy Marble Sr., they are going to have absolutely no idea. Who?s B.J. Armstrong? They will have no clue.

For Iowa's sake let's hope he's not another Mike Tisdale.

Unlike Woodbury, Tisdale was not ranked in the top-50 of his class at the beginning of his SR year, and he did not win MVP at any prestigious AAU camps like the NBA camp that Woodbury was MVP of.

Woodbury seems to be more comparable in body type to BJ Mullens than Tisdale.
