Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell Gets Visit from Cal
byScott Anderson
October 5th, 2010

Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell got a nice surprise today in open gym at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis today. Coach Cal made the drive to watch Yogi shoot, pass, and do what a top point guard in the 2012 class does when they are in an open gym. They shoot and pass really good.

Yogi Ferrell talks Hoosier Hysteria

By Greg Rosenstein | IU men's basketball beat reporter

Posted at 8:08 pm on October 19, 2010 | | | Comments (0)

It?s no secret that many of the nation?s top high school basketball players reside in the state of Indiana. And since being hired as IU coach, Tom Crean has made it a point of emphasis to recruit and get those players to come to Bloomington.

It?s worked so far with Broad Ripple?s Ron Patterson. It?s worked so far with Hamilton Heights? Austin Etherington. It?s also worked for freshman AAU teammates Trey Lyles and James Blackmon Jr.

One of the top remaining targets the Hoosiers hope to add soon to that list is Park Tudor (Indianapolis) junior guard Kevin ?Yogi? Ferrell. The Indiana Elite AAU prospect ranks as Rivals.com?s No. 2 point guard and No. 17 overall player in the class of 2012.

I spoke with Ferrell on Sunday night about his visit to Bloomington for Hoosier Hysteria and his expectations for the high school season.

YF: I stayed overnight down there with Jeremy Hollowell. It was a lot of fun. We just hung out and chilled.

IDS: How nice was it to be able to spend more time with him?

YF: It was a lot of fun. We played AAU together in third, fourth and fifth grade, but I hadn?t really talked to him much until this weekend. We?ve talked before, but really hadn?t hung out. He?s a real fun dude.

IDS: Did you and Jeremy talk at all about possibly playing college basketball together?

YF: A little. We talked about where each other was going to go and maybe going together.

IDS: Obviously you are considering a lot of different schools. How high on the list is IU at this point?

YF: I?d say its up there, but I don?t really have any favorites right now.

A quick update on Yogi Ferrell
by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | November 1st, 2010

Lost a bit among the Hanner Perea commitment and the official visits of Austin Etherington and Cody Zeller this past weekend was the fact that IU?s primary point guard target, Kevin ?Yogi? Ferrell, snuck in a quick unofficial visit on Saturday.

The 2012 Park Tudor guard, who said a prior obligation prevented him from attending Friday?s ?Night of the Living Red,? joined the aforementioned prospects at the IU-Northwestern football game.

?It was a lot more fun with Hanner, Austin and Cody down there,? Ferrell told Inside the Hall of the experience in Bloomington, adding that it was ?pretty much all the same? as his previous trips.

In an interview last spring, Ferrell?s father Kevin told Zach Osterman that Indiana wasn?t recruiting Yogi quite as heavily as a few other schools. That?s no longer the case and it?s become clear in recent months that Ferrell is IU?s most coveted recruit at the point guard position.

?They?re just showing a lot more love,? he said. ?The coaches are coming out, seeing my open gyms, talking to me about being a leader if I come to Indiana. They?re definitely recruiting me more than they used to be.?

Like many who follow the program closely, Ferrell will be keeping an eye on the Zeller decision, which is expected to come sometime next week with the early signing period beginning on Wednesday, November 10.

He admitted that Zeller?s announcement could play a factor into his decision, which he?s doesn?t expect to make until sometime next year.

?It would affect me and where I?m going,? he said. ?But I?m just going to look at what?s best for me, really.?

Ferrell Sr: ?I?m thinking maybe IU?
by Zachary Osterman in Recruiting | November 11th, 2010

Cody Zeller?s commitment was always expected to immediately impact Indiana?s overall recruiting picture, particularly with Zeller?s close friend Yogi Ferrell. Hearing the words today made presumption reality, according to Ferrell?s father, Kevin Ferrell Sr.

?I think it does accelerate it,? Ferrell Sr. said of his son?s recruiting process, adding that Yogi has ?always wanted to play with Cody.?

?There might be a process that he may go there,? Ferrell Sr. told Inside the Hall. ?As it stands right now, I?m thinking maybe IU.?

Landing Zeller?s commitment, probably as sought after as any in Indiana basketball?s last 30 years, has fans hopeful that his joining the fold will open the door for fellow top recruits.

Success certainly breeds success in the game, but given the relationship between Zeller and several top prospects ? most notably Ferrell ? grabbing the 2011 forward was crucial for Indiana in numerous ways. Such a shift in Ferrell?s overall process, which Kevin Sr. described as ?wide open,? appears to be good news for Hoosier fans.

Yogi Ferrell has long been considered an IU lean, something Kevin Sr. acknowledged Thursday. Between the chance to play with some of close AAU teammates ? including Zeller, Austin Etherington, Peter Jurkin and 2012 forward Hanner Perea ? and the opportunity to put Indiana back in the forefront of college basketball?s collective consciousness, Indiana has a lot to offer the younger Ferrell.

?The challenge of getting IU back on its feet is intriguing to Yogi,? his father said.

The next step in the process, according to Ferrell Sr., will be a family sitdown, to try and pin down Yogi?s next move, which could include one or two visits. Indiana clearly sits well in any such discussion.

Not lost on the Ferrells either is the fact that Indiana has an obvious need at point guard in the 2012 class, a need Yogi Ferrell would fill nicely. Rivals rates Ferrell as the No. 2 point guard in his class, and No. 17 overall. The recruiting service considers him a five-star prospect, No. 2 overall in the state of Indiana in his class. Committing to IU would pair him with Rivals? No. 1 in the Hoosier state, Hanner Perea.

And from his father?s perspective, Indiana fits nicely as well. It?s close, it?s about to be saturated with what Ferrell described as ?good kids, good caliber kids,? and there?s an obvious slot at Ferrell?s preferred position.

?I think IU would be my preference,? he said. ?(The) fit would just complement him well right now.?

Yogi Ferrell “very excited” about Zeller commitment to Indiana
Nov. 11, 2010

Kyle Neddenriep

Kevin Ferrell got a call from his son, Park Tudor junior guard Yogi Ferrell, a few minutes after Washington’s Cody Zeller announced Thursday that he had selected Indiana as his college destination over Butler and North Carolina.

He wanted to talk. So the Ferrells did talk on Thursday night. There’s no commitment yet, but Yogi is “very excited” about Zeller’s decision.

“He’s happy Cody is going to IU,” Kevin Ferrell said. “I think it probably helps (in relation to Indiana). IU has done a great job recruiting guys that he wants to play with.”

Indiana has also secured commitments from 6-8 Hanner Perea (La Lumiere Prep), 6-2 Ron Patterson (Broad Ripple) and 6-11 Peter Jurkin (Charlotte, N.C.) in Ferrell’s class. Ferrell has established friendships with those players, Perea in particular. All of them play for the Indiana Elite program in the spring and summer.

Asked if his son’s commitment could come before the season, Ferrell said “it’s possible” but didn’t want to put a specific timeline on it.

“We’re definitely trying to narrow down a little more,” he said. “The next thing to do is sit down with his coach (Ed Schilling) and go from there. You know, a lot of the schools that have offered him, we haven’t even visited. So we have to decide what we want to do there.”

Ferrell said “IU has always been a top contender.”

“There’s mixed emotions because initially we wanted to wait, but you also don’t want to miss out on a chance to play with really good players – guys who can help you get to the next level,” he said.

Yogi Ferrell is ranked as the No. 17 player nationally by Rivals.com in the junior class and the No. 2 point guard.

“From a father’s perspective you want to make sure it’s the right place for him to go and that he’s happy,” Kevin Ferrell said. “Instead of waiting, we’re going to get things narrowed down pretty soon.”

Commitments from Davis and Hartman mark a big week in recruiting for Indiana, but the Hoosiers may not be done. Park Tudor junior Yogi Ferrell will make his commitment known before Wednesday?s game against University, his father Kevin Ferrell said. Ferrell has narrowed his list to Butler, Florida, Indiana, Virginia and Wake Forest.

Kevin Ferrell said his son has made his decision, but will wait to make it public on Wednesday.

?We sat down and talked about it and he feels good about it,? Kevin Ferrell said. ?I think he?s happy and ready to get focused on the season.?

Crean starting to pick it up at IU...

Crean is a pretty good coach with a reputation as a strong recruiter. He was a good assistant at several schools including Michigan State and very sucessfull as a head coach at Marquette. It was only a matter of time.
