'12 VA C A.J. Hammons (Purdue Verbal)

has an IU offer in hand.

visited purdue for the Wisconsin game along with devonte rivera-smith and ron patterson. patterson was offered, hammons not yet.

big potential, but most coaches will probably wait to see how he progresses. IU is offering a lot of 2012 kids (i think they have 5+ offers out already) in an effort to improve quickly - they won't have a ton of offers to hand out for 2010 or 2011.

"Project" sounds like the right word for this kid - the link from the Purdue fan says Hammons is averaging 5 points and 4 rebounds per game this season. I don't envy Coach Miller having to go out on trips like that in the middle of the season.

The kid is only a freshman and if other schools are starting to watch him if we didn't he might remember that come commitment time if he becomes a more developed player. I am sure that Miller has other things to do but they must see something and Hammonds.

exactly. all schools are watching because the sky's the limit with this kid. he's alread amongst the top shot blockers in the state. he's inconsistant and doesn't have a hug offensive game yet, but he's got all the tools and a ton of time to work on it. if that happens, he'll have 4+ big ten offers easy.

no major other than IU has offered yet, and IU is taking fliers on guys right now. they offered cody zeller and at 6'7" he's got to grow 3-4 more inches to be offered by most others i'd think. he's not yet as good as either brother, and maybe he'll blossom late like tyler, but to offer now seems premature.

BuckeyeGrove.com - Spiece: Richmond shines on day two (free)

The state of Indiana is absolutely loaded with talent in the 2012 class, and a lot of that talent was on display with the Spiece Indy Heat squad. The most physically-impressive player on the team is A.J. Hammons. At a legit 6 feet 11 and 270 pounds, Hammons is a physical presence who has skill. Maybe the most impressive thing about Hammons is that he is already a very advanced passer for a young big man. Along with his ability to make impressive passes, especially outlet passes, Hammons also has a mean streak down low and likes to finish with authority. As he gets in better shape and more experienced, his game will only continue to flourish.

Hammons is on the rise

A.J. Hammons' growth spurt might be ending, but his national reputation is only beginning.

The Carmel High School center, who recently measured at 6-11, already has a host of major college basketball programs chasing him as he finishes his freshman year.

Indiana and Purdue are among them.

"I'm just looking right now," Hammons said before a recent workout at Carmel. "I'm not even going to try to pick a school until the end of my junior year probably. I'm just looking at all of them."

Hammons will be playing for the Spiece 15-and-under team this weekend in the adidas May Classic, a major spring event in Bloomington, Ind., with teams from New Jersey to California.

While college coaches aren't allowed to watch, the talent evaluation services that rank players will be there, and it's a chance for emerging players like Hammons to face other top prospects.

"Hammons is going to get interest at the highest level provided he capitalizes on his size and ability," said Dave Telep, national recruiting analyst for scout.com. "I like his instincts and his presence."

Hammons has made unofficial visits to IU, Purdue, Marquette and Georgetown, and other coaches, such as Ohio State coach Thad Matta, have visited Carmel to watch Hammons work out.

Hammons averaged 5.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots while shooting 69 percent as a freshman for Carmel.

Hammons a factor

Carmel coach Mark Galloway said the improvement of 6-10 center A.J. Hammons from his freshman to sophomore year likely can't be measured in numbers, but his impact is far greater than a year ago.

"He's not going to get a lot of credit for the shots that he changes," Galloway said. "On offense, when he gets the ball, two or three guys are going to collapse on him and we'll have guys open. We know the value that he brings. He can change a game."

Hammons totaled 19 points and 15 rebounds in weekend victories over North Central and Tech. Although he has quick feet for a post player and a soft touch around the basket and free throw line, Hammons said he "still has a lot of work to do."

"I need to improve my offense," he said. "But if I don't have anything in there, we've got some really good shooters outside."

Hammons said he doesn't have any college offers yet and probably won't focus on recruiting until next year. Illinois, IU, Purdue and Xavier have shown interest.

I saw Coach Miller at the Carmel/North Central game. I didn't ask him who he was there to see, but I believe it was more him than DSR. Hammons is improving a lot. Carmel doesn't look for him in the post very often, but he always makes good things happen when they do. He either scores or he passes out of the double team very well and gets baskets for others.

Indiana has offered...may visit Purdue for the OSU game...also has an offer from Xavier and interest in the Big 10 from Purdue, Ohio State, Illinois and Minnesota.

I don't see how Hammons doesn't have more offers. He's 6'10, solid body, good hands, good touch, passes very well, good timing for blocking shots, understands the game. His potential is big.

I would much rather offer a center early as opposed to a guard.
