Central Florida All-Star Game: All-American, Eagle Scout, homecoming king ... what's next for Johnny Townsend?

Johnny Townsend, P, Orlando Boone High (CHRIS HAYS / ORLANDO SENTINEL / June 19, 2012)

It?s been an interesting, busy and rewarding past year for Orlando Boone High punter Johnny Townsend.

Let?s count the ways. He earned a football scholarship to Ohio State University. He earned the prestigious Eagle Scout Award. He was selected All-District by the Florida Coaches Athletic Commission. He was selected All-Metro Conference. He was selected to play in the Central Florida All-Star Game. He earned the status of All-American and will play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. Oh, and he was voted Homecoming King at Boone High.

Surely we are leaving something off, but obviously it?s been a good year to be Johnny Townsend.

?It?s all pretty unreal,? Townsend said recently, fresh off a ceremony to honor him for being selected to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, at which he was presented with a jersey.

Of course it didn?t all happen overnight. Townsend has spent a good portion of his young life working toward the goals he set and the hard part was just staying the course.

?Everything that has happened have been goals I?ve been reaching toward,? Townsend said. ?There has been so much work that has been put into everything ? all stuff I had dreamed of since I started boy scouts when I was like six years old, or when I started playing football. I?ve been playing football and been in the scouts since I can remember.?

LOVE that he understands that The Game is THE GAME and no other rivalry compares. Really happy to see a punter of his caliber coming to OSU. Hopefully he can come in and have a huge impact early...he could really help take some heat off of our young defense.

Add another title to the resume of Orlando Boon punter Johnny Townsend.

He is a U.S. Army All-American, a future Ohio State Buckeye, 2012 Florida Class 8A All-State, 2012 Central Florida All-Star, an Eagle Scout, the 2012 Boone High homecoming king, and now he's the winner of the 2013 Doc Blanchard Award.

Friday night, when Townsend and the rest of the athletes performing in Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, sat down for dinner at the annual awards banquet, he had no idea he was an award finalist.

About an hour later, Pro Football Hall of Famer Marcus Allen was presenting the award to Townsend as the Felix "Doc" Blanchard Award winner.

"It was pretty unexpected," said Townsend. "I didn?t even know I was up for any award when I first got there, but I was flipping through the program and I saw my name. That?s how I knew.

"At least we didn't have to give any speeches."

For sure, because Townsend would have been quite unprepared.

"They brought us back and I had known for only about 15-20 minutes before the presentation," Townsend said. "I hadn?t really read up on the reward until later and so that only made it that much more meaningful."

The Doc Blanchard Award and the Glenn Davis Award are given annually to the two players at the U.S. Army Bowl, a representative from both the East and West squads, who best exemplify the U.S. Army?s high standard of excellence in community service, education and athletic distinction.

Wide receiver Corey Robinson from San Antonio Christian School, won the Glenn Davis Award.

In Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl, Townsend, who averaged 43.4 yards per punt his senior season at Boone, boomed a 50-yard punt inside the 5-yard line on his first attempt of the game at the Alamodome. He punted two other times in the game, with one attempt getting partially blocked.

"It was awesome," Townsend said. "I was nervous before the game me and my roommate we didn?t even sleep hardley. We were just too excited. It was the biggest crowd I had ever played before. There were so many people."

Have we ever had a more lauded kicker coming into the program?

I know how Nuge turned out but I don't remember him getting this much love before he arrived. Pretty awesome year Townsend is having.

I'd say Buchanan was even more highly regarded. #3 & #4 ranked kicker per Rivals & Scout, respectively. 3x 1st team All-Ohio, USA Today All-American, Army All American, first commit of monster 2008 class. And there was lots of talk surrounding him doing double duty as a K/P
