Morgan visits Ohio State West Virginia
By Doug Harris | Thursday, September 8, 2011

Maverick Morgan?s offer list seems to keep growing.

The 6-foot-10, 240-pound junior basketball standout from Springboro visited Ohio State and attended to the Akron football game Saturday and then went to West Virginia for the Mountaineers? football opener against Marshall on Sunday.

While OSU coach Thad Matta said the Buckeyes are still evaluating him, WVU coach Bob Huggins came through with a scholarship offer.

Morgan is scheduled to visit Butler on Sept. 17 and then Southern Cal and Virginia Tech after that.

?I?m just kind of checking out colleges I?m not familiar with,? he said.

He also has offers from Dayton, Wright State, Toledo and Ohio U. He said he plans to play in some open gyms with the Flyers again this fall.

Asked if he still has a high interest in UD, he said: ?Yeah, totally. Dayton?s great. I?ve grown up my whole life loving Dayton and going to Dayton games.?

Big East offer: Springboro’s Maverick Morgan made unofficial visits to Ohio State and West Virginia during the first football weekend Sept. 3-5 and hobnobbed with OSU coach Thad Matta and WVU’s Bob Huggins at those games.

“It’s so awesome,” Morgan said. “I was with Thad Matta and (assistant Jeff) Boals the whole time. It’s just amazing. With coach Huggins, we went tailgating, and then I was tailgating with the players.

“We were kind of jumping around from tailgate to tailgate. They’re like celebrities down there.”

While OSU said it was still evaluating Morgan, WVU came through with a scholarship offer.

The 6-10 Morgan has a visit scheduled this weekend to Southern Cal and another to Virginia Tech after that.

Asked if he still has interest in UD, Morgan said: “Yeah, totally. Dayton’s great. I’ve grown up my whole life loving Dayton and going to Dayton games.”

He just picked up a scholarship offer from West Virginia. He made a trip to Morgantown after being hosted on a visit to Ohio State on the opening weekend of college football.

Of the Buckeyes, he said: ?I get mail from them every day. It?s so cool to hear from them. They have one, maybe two scholarships in my grade. They said they were going take it slow as far as everyone just because they?re limited in the scholarship numbers.?

Asked when he might make a decision, the 6-10, 240-pound Morgan said: ?I?m not really sure. I?ve thought about it a lot. I get that question often. I?m just going to play it by ear. When it feels right, it feels right. It could be on signing day (as a senior). It could be next week.?

Springboro's Morgan rising on recruiting lists
Junior has bulked up to add size to his skill in the middle.

SPRINGBORO ? The first time Maverick Morgan took a ballet class, he knew it wasn?t a good fit.

?Plies and stuff,? Morgan, the 6-foot-10 Springboro High School junior, laughed this week during a break from practice in the gym hallway. ?No offense, but they were dancers. I just wanted coordination.?

At the time, first-grader Morgan was long and lanky, getting used to the body type that eventually would make him a coveted recruit. He signed up for ballet to help his feet and movement, not to learn the delicate, bending-knee basics of graceful dancers.

After two years of ballet classes ? he later joined a group focused more on dexterity than dance ? Morgan was on his way to vast improvement.

?That just started me in doing something every day, getting better every day,? he said. ?I upgraded from that to strength training, and speed training, and I knew I had to do more.?

Committing to off-court work, Morgan has built himself into a 6-10, 240-pound force in the middle who mixes soft touch around the basket with aggression in rebounding. The result: a rise on recruiting lists.

Morgan, like all players around the state, will begin a new season tonight. He will do so with even greater size and skill than a season ago, when he averaged 12.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.

He holds scholarship offers from Dayton, Wright State, West Virginia, Ohio University, USC, Toledo and Iowa State. He attended Tuesday?s Ohio State-Duke basketball games with tickets provided by the Buckeyes as they continue to keep watch.

For Maverick Morgan, having college basketball coaches in the stands to watch him playing pickup games has gone from being intimidating to motivating.

?I think it?s good,? the Springboro High School center said. ?You don?t even think for a second of not playing hard. Last summer, when my recruitment started picking up, I was real nervous about everything, but now I just go out there and do my thing.?

Dayton, Illinois, Southern Cal and Minnesota sent coaches to watch the 6-foot-10 junior in an open gym Monday. He remains the UD Flyers? primary recruiting target in the 2013 class, but the competition keeps growing.

Morgan said he most recently has gotten a scholarship offer from Minnesota to go along with offers from UD, Xavier, West Virginia, Iowa State and USC.

An NCAA rule change has allowed coaches to evaluate players at AAU events the next two weekends, and Ohio State almost certainly will be taking notes on Morgan. The Buckeyes haven?t offered a scholarship yet, but they?ve hosted him on visits and have four full rides for the senior class and haven?t signed anyone yet.

They?ll probably bank a couple for next year, and the extra openings may mean Morgan could end up in their plans.

He clearly would find an OSU offer enticing.

That?s a big deal,? he said. ?I?ve been rooting for Ohio State my entire life. Growing up in Ohio, I?m a Buckeye.?

He?s been to numerous UD games, is close to the coaches and said he?ll keep the Flyers high on his list. But he?s seriously considering rival Xavier, too.

?They?ll always be up there, schools I?ve grown up watching ? such great tradition. Them and Xavier will always be there,? he said.
