Basketball star returns to Shaler
By Chris Harlan, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Friday, July 9, 2010

Geno Thorpe, one of the WPIAL's up-and-coming basketball stars, left Shady Side Academy and returned to Shaler.

A 6-foot-3 rising sophomore, Thorpe averaged 15.6 points per game during his one year at the private school in Fox Chapel.

"Some things didn't work out at Shady Side Academy for me and my family," Thorpe said. "We just decided that Shaler was a better choice."

Thorpe, a guard, attended the Hoop Group Elite camp this week at Albright College in Reading, a basketball clinic that draws some of the country's best high school players.

He said he has drawn interest from college programs, including Pitt, Ohio State, Louisville, Arizona, Temple and George Washington. Thorpe received his first formal scholarship offer two weeks ago from Rutgers and Mike Rice, the former Robert Morris coach.

"Me and Mike Rice were real cool with one another," Thorpe said. "I'd been to some of his camps. It felt good to get that first offer."

His arrival should be a boost for Shaler, which was 11-11 last season and reached the first round of the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs.

"I'm looking forward to Quad-A competition," Thorpe said.

Thorpe also played football at Shady Side but will play only basketball at Shaler.

"I knew basketball was where I was headed," said Thorpe, who teamed with fellow freshman Michael Young to help Shady Side reach the WPIAL Class AA basketball semifinals.

"I liked Shady Side," Thorpe said, "but Shaler was home."

?[I?m] probably a favorite of the Big Ten. Ohio State is where I?d want to end up, but I like the Big East too,? stated Thorpe.

Thorpe is planning to visit the Buckeyes at the end of the month. He recently had the opportunity to visit Rutgers and has a previous relationship with new head coach Mike Rice who was previously at Robert Morris.

THORPE SET TO VISIT KANSAS STATE; SCHOOLS COMING BY SHALER

Geno Thorpe had an impressive summer playing with the NJ Playaz 16U squad on the AAU circuit. The athletic 6-foot-3, 175-pound guard had toyed with the idea of transferring from Shaler Area High School to a few different programs in New Jersey, but he is staying put this season and looking forward to a big season in front of friends and family.

?Just being around my family so they could always come see me play,? said Thorpe about what was the biggest factor in staying at Shaler for his junior season. ?I?m looking forward to going to states and making a run and trying to win it all [this season].?

Like the Western Pennsylvania area, Shaler is not known as a big basketball producing hot spot. However several college coaches have already found their way to the Pittsburgh-area school, including assistants from Kansas State (Lamont Evans) and Penn State (Brian Daly) with assistants from Baylor (Jerome Tang) and Wisconsin (Lamont Paris) expected this week. One unofficial visit has already been scheduled to this point.

?October 29th to Kansas State,? said Thorpe when asked if any visits were set. ?That?s all so far.?

Those four schools are certainly in the mix, along with three schools from what is currently the BIG EAST.

?Pitt (tickets), Rutgers (tickets), Seton Hall (tickets), Kansas State, Wisconsin, Baylor and Penn State,? said Thorpe of the schools he is currently actively considering.

Thorpe, who has been closely following the BIG EAST news of the past weekend as he has grown up a fan of the conference, says he currently has no leaders with the schools recruiting him.

?No favorites at this point [as] everyone is doing a great job recruiting me,? he said.

Shaler junior Geno Thorpe, one of the WPIAL's top basketball players, has verbally committed to Penn State, he said today.

Thorpe, a 6-foot-3 point guard, chose the Nittany Lions over scholarship offers from Pitt, Kansas State, Rutgers, Seton Hall, St. Joseph's and Wisconson, among others. He averaged 17.5 points for Shaler last season, and was a member of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Terrific 10.

Thorpe told Penn State first-year coach Patrick Chambers on Tuesday morning. His commitment won't be binding until at least a year from now, when he can sign a letter of intent. The early signing period for seniors starts Wednesday.
