Meet Kyle Ahrens

Ohio State's 2015 recruiting class took a little bump this evening as five-star shooting guard Luke Kennard, from Franklin (Ohio) chose Duke over Ohio State as his college choice. Kennard, an AAU teammate of current Buckeye commitment A.J. Harris, is one of a handful of highly-ranked players in the Buckeye's backyard.

Kennard and Harris are two of what seems to an entire roster full of thoroughbreds. Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary's V.J. King, perhaps the top 2016 player in the country also runs alongside them on the court as does Versailles (Ohio) sharpshooter Kyle Ahrens, the 104th-ranked player in 247Sports.com's composite rankings.

Continued...

Vastly underrated in my opinion...the injury is what kept him from being initially ranked higher. After having watched just about all available film on him and Grandstaff, I would take Ahrens every single time, based in on small part on the fact that Ahrens can finish with either hand whereas Grandstaff has no left in the videos I saw. As someone mentioned in the Kennard thread, Ahrens looks very similar...Kennard is quicker with better vision, better handle and better passing ability right now. But Kyle seems to have tremendous upside, especially as someone who can both attack the rim and shoot from outside. And he is a tenacious defender. I would definitely like to see an offer go out...especially when you add the fact that he also has offers from Michigan State, Iowa, and just about every school in-state.

Kyle's a helluva player. Grew up a Dayton fan and they probably have a slight lead at this point.

His grandma played basketball for OSU. I think an OSU offer would likely move them towards the top (or to the top), but he isn't a commit on the spot kid.

Grandstaff is a shooter only really. Ahrens can score in a variety of ways. Probably about even with Kennard athletically (with Ahrens being a little better leaper).

Yes. Dayton is likely the main competition right now for anyone jumping in and offering.
Good stuff 22...wonder how hard Iowa and Michigan State are pursuing him?

I was really impressed with his film. He would be a great addition to a class that could include Harris and Giddens as well as hopefully Bragg and Mitchell, however unlikely those two may be at this point.

I know it's a pipe dream at this point but that's an interesting starting five right there:

PG: Harris
SG: Ahrens
SF: Mitchell
PF: Bragg
C: Giddens

Not sure, just know that the family are big UD supporters and he's been going to games his whole life. Dayton has been recruiting him the longest as well and has built a good relationship. I don't feel he's close to committing at this point however.

I don't see him committing anywhere until summer/early fall most likely, so there is some time to get involved.

I just do not understand why no offer. I think this is how we lose some in-state recruits but what do I know.

It's the same argument/worry people have about football. If you are trying to win championships, you have to have elite level talent. To get that talent, you have to chase the big fish first and foremost. And it's not like they're ignoring in-state kids. Kennard, Bragg, King all have offers.

Ahrens is a very good player, but not the player Kennard is. You don't offer both while you still have a shot at landing 1, especially if you're not ready to take both. And if you offer Ahrens right away, you give a tangible line to teams that he was a clear 2nd choice. If you communicate with him first and re-evaluate, you can avoid that.

There's really not rush with Ahrens. I don't think he's close to committing anywhere.

Oh you are just saying that because you want him to become a Flyer:wink:
