as a junior, battin shot 52% from three (32/61) and 87% from the line (195/225).

i like the offer. sure, battin is not all that athletic. however, he is versatile and extremely savvy. he'll find the defender's weakness and exploit it all three levels. he's very much that northwestern style of player who doesn't impress in pregame layups but infuriates you with his crafty moves seemingly learned from 25 years of rec league.

the videos cannot be embedded, but here are two videos from recent aau play that highlight battin's game better than the above youtube video: one and two.

Well, now that I understand what embedded means:wink: I am glad that I watched these two videos because, as you mentioned, he looks much better in these two videos than the one posted above. He looked awfully stiff in the Rivals video but not so much in these two videos. I guess the main question is can he guard the rim. The one problem with these highlight videos is that they are all offensively geared.

i think therein lies the concern. wesson, potter, and battin do not project to provide adequate interior defense. the athleticism would be lacking. that being stated, of the post players that i think holtmann currently has the best shot getting, battin appeals to me the most. i love the variability and efficiency of his offense. my guess, though, is that he'll pick up more offers from out west. 2018's frontcourt selection is weak, and schools are reaching as the pool of available talent dries up. and drawing left coast players to a midwestern school is already tough enough. as it stands right now, however, ohio state is his best offer.

With all due respect, his defense has to be bad beyond imagination for me to think he is a bad offer or fit for this team - if the dude projects as a 6'10" 250 center who can shoot really well and provide efficient post offense, I'm thinking go for it. That has been one of the flaws with Matta's teams, not enough scorers. I am tired of bigs who can't shoot FTs and have the "dunk and closer" range.

I get it, you want good post D, so do I, but I would take the 6'10" scoring post and teach him to defend instead of the 6'10" shot blocker who has no feel for post offense. I see the appeal of having a glue guy or defensive stopper in the post, especially with the roster as is, but I want them to prioritize offense, maybe use a grad transfer spot for a glue guy in the frontcourt.

not sure the "but" is necessary since you and i have more or less the same opinion. we've seen more than our share of offensive projects in the post: bell, mcdonald, giddens, lauderdale, funderburk, and williams. much of my apprehension of hayes is rooted in that history.

His post game is too legit, haven't seen a repertoire of post skill at Ohio State since a young Kosta Koufus

2018 Center Riley Battin Names Top Six Schools

i wasn't aware that holtman & co. already had a relationship with battin. as jallow and watson have shown, familiarity goes a long way. anyway, just based on his comments about the six schools, no target appears to stand out from osu. i also like that he labeled osu as a "prestigious" school. that perspective is advantageous for our school when the recruit has offers from yale, lehigh, bucknell, northwestern, and vandy.

Same UAA stat quoted in Elijah Weaver's thread where Weaver was #1 in PPG at jump shooting, Riley was #2.

I hope OSU starts making a push to get Riley in for an OV. It doesn't seem like the Bucks have any better and more likely options for a big in this class. Battin has great touch and a good feel for the game, great range, and even has some point forward-type moments. I think he can be a really good four year contributor.

He reportedly has visits with Davidson and Utah scheduled, Vandy possibly as well. Have not seen any mention of a visit for OSU.
