BRANDON NEWMAN REMAINS OPEN

It took a little longer for some of the best from the Midwest to jump into the recruitment of Brandon Newman, but I think they finally got it. A potential 3-and-D wing that can make shots, create for others and defend either wing position, Newman was solid again Thursday.

Purdue became the first Big Ten program to offer Newman earlier this spring, and Ohio State and Indiana quickly followed. For the time being, it would look as if the three are the favorites to beat in his recruitment. However, he did tell Rivals.com that Seton Hall and Kansas are the two most recent schools to inquire about him, and the KU interest seems to have piqued his interest some.

Headed to Montverde Academy in the fall, Newman is staying patient with the process and his move to the Florida powerhouse should only bring in more SEC and ACC looks, which he might not have received had he stayed at his local high school in Indiana. He did say that he would like to visit Xavier and Ohio State before school begins, though a commitment or even a cut list remains far out of sight.

MOVED FROM RECRUITING THREAD:

I, personally, have not read that Newman is down to a final 4. I have heard that OSU, Purdue, Indiana, and Xavier might be his current Top 4, though, similar to what QualityLoss is saying, and also the part about Newman and Franklin not going to the same school. Franklin's final 3 is Purdue, Indiana, and Xavier and he is probably going to decide before Newman, so that would eliminate one of the current top suitors for Newman that isn't Ohio State.

Anyways, I am just going to go ahead and spit out the other part of Brian's report pertaining Newman, because I don't even know why this isn't public knowledge: Brandon Newman unofficially visited Xavier and Ohio State Monday. There was skepticism that Newman would get an OSU visit in before he heads down to Montverde, but they were able to squeeze him in right after they got back from Spain, pretty much, and I guess it went well. So yeah. I figure at some point 247 will update their timeline with Brandon Newman's unofficial visits...

Also, it sounds like Newman might decide in the Fall, it just depends if he feels comfortable with the decision.

Oh yes, forgot to include that Newman visited, but I believe Adam Jardy tipped that off already. Still think all of this is academic with EJ visiting at the end of the month.

Good, then I'm not spoiling anything!

I do agree, EJ is our best shot with any of our targets and the best bet to be first to commit. But good to know that we might be in a Top 3/4ish for another recruit that we want because I don't know if I could say that about any of our other targets after Liddell.

Just a guess, but I imagine Newman ends up at IU and Franklin at Purdue. IU is reeling for a guard right now and Purdue is likely to grab Franklin soon.

I would agree with that. I do think Franklin picks Purdue soon, and then I think IU has a better shot at Newman than we do, given that they are the prestige in-state school with plenty of opportunity for a wing guard like Newman as opposed to Ohio State where we should have several more years of Washington, Muhammad, Ahrens, and Jallow. I do think Newman could help our roster a lot with his combination of length, athleticism, rebounding, and shooting... but I am just not sure he will see it that way.

Hopefully EJ will help none of that matter, though.

Ohio State men’s basketball recruiting | Buckeyes host 4-star guard Brandon Newman
...

It led Newman to take an unofficial visit to check out the program August 13, and it has him working to schedule an official visit for likely mid-September. The biggest question, though, of whether the Buckeyes would take another guard in the class?

That was atop the list of discussion points for his last visit.

“I definitely had some questions about that, but on my unofficial they answered all those questions for me,” he told The Dispatch in a phone interview. “I’m looking forward to setting up a date for an official.”

...

The Buckeyes have told Newman that there would still be room for him in the rotation. He could also present himself as an option more on the wing than just in the backcourt.

“They mentioned their offense,” he said. “They’re going to run a four-out, one-in, ball-screen motion offense so they want to put me in ball screens and have chances for me to make shots and play defense.”

continued...
