1969 Rose Bowl on TV now!

I watched it. Boy the announcers (Curt Gowdy and Kyle Rote) were really terrible. Actually I watched two Ohio State games yesterday. The ESPN Classic channel had the Ohio Styate - Michigan game from Saturday as an "instant classic".

I set up the DVR to record Saturday's game. I was so excited that I didn't select extend the recording for an hour. I went with 30 minutes. so when I went to rewatch it the recording ended just after the late helmet-to-helmet hit on Troy.

I wake up Sunday, read that it's going to be on instant classics, go to the DVR and set it to record the game second time and think there's no need to extend the recording time, so... you guessed it... that recording ends right after Crable gets off his cheap shot. I'm sooooo pissed.

I watched it last night too. Aside from the commentary, what I really took away from it was how unbearable televised football was back then, instant replay was a chore, you'd be lucky to have three cameras, if it was a really big game anyway, and you did not know the time remaining, down, or distance unless you were paying close attention.

Stats? Forget about it!

The things we take for granted today with the information overload we have available.

You watch that rebroadcast now and you're thinking, This technology is going to put a man on the moon in six months? No fucking way!

Oh, and tear-away, fishnet jerseys were a horrible idea. You think OSU's grounds crew goofed with our turf this year? That's the gosh darn Rose Bowl, with idyllic California weather and a month to manicure the field, and that was a disaster!

Lastly, and probably the best capsule from that game, was seeing how, back then, the game being played on the field was the story. OSU had the game well in hand the entirety of the fourth quarter, and not once was there any fawning over Woody's legacy, the impending OSU championship, what happened the past year, what might happen the following year. Nothing. Not even a single camera shot of Woody.

The entire broadcast was about the game on the field at that moment in time, and nothing else.

Oh, and the NBC-carried Rose Bowl doing the promo for the upcoming NBC broadcast of Super Bowl III, featuring the Colts and Jets. NBC was relevant once. I'd like to go back and bet on the Jets to pull off the shocker, too!

I think what's most crazy is that most of what Dryden said was still present in the broadcast of the 1989 Fiesta Bowl (ND v. WV) that STO showed. No scorebox in the corner, no clock in the corner, down & distance only every so often.

Sun Devil Stadium had a big dirt patch at midfield. The helmets were ginormous, as were the shoulder pads and towels half the players had. A lot of the guys had their jerseys tied up so there'd be a minimum of grabbing. Each coach had a student that would follow him around to make sure the wires from his headset weren't tangled. Barry Alvarez (ND's defensive coordinator) looked svelte.

Amazing how far we've come just in the last 15-20 years.
