There’s a screen grab of Dobbins wide open on a checkdown instead of Fields airing it to the endzone. I won’t post here but it will haunt me for a long time.

we’ll beat Clemson someday...right? :smash:

Yep. Never taking the checkdowns, always wanting the big play. That's not the smart move right there, if it isn't open at the start of the play then take the checkdown and keep it alive. They had the time. The call wasn't necessarily "bad," but as soon as it broke down, be smart.

I saw that too on the replay.

Forcing the ball was out of character for him. I wanted him to take more chances..thought he needed to so he’d grow. Ohh well

I think the throw to Olave was fine. Olave just broke the route off.

Watch the post game presser. Day and Fields talk about it being the play they wanted, and it ended up being miscommunication. Chris thought Justin was gonna scramble.

According to Day, Fields, and Olave, it was the exact look they wanted and the exact same route and throw that was open for the TD on the 4th and 2 play where Day showed the world both of his stones.

Olave was in the slot with a mis-match on the S. He was supposed to run a post, which would have been open just like the TD throw earlier in the game. Except this time, it took slightly longer as Fields stepped left, Olave thought he was going into scramble mode so he said he went to break it off to the corner instead of running his post because he thought Fields was scrambling to his left. Fields then threw the called post which would have been open had Olave stayed on his route.

It was just bad timing and bad luck.

Lawyers spend no time arguing about "letter of the law" because any moron can go on the Internet and read what the law says.

Lawyers spend millions of hours and earn billions of dollars arguing about what laws mean, what are the intents of laws, how and when (and why) laws should be enforced, what results are just and unjust, etc.

Lawmakers cannot write perfect laws. Officials have to use sound judgment in enforcing imperfect laws, otherwise laws are pretty much worthless.

"Letter of the law" arguments have no merit when the letter of the law does not serve the intent of the law. Time to move on....

Agreed. When a law is against you, you pound the facts!

Again, that pass isn't really on Fields or Olave. It is a symptom of how the offense has been all year. Fields still needs a lot of refinement as a passer. He has been fortunate to have a great deal of time to find his 2nd and 3rd options throughout the season. If they haven't been available, he has either bought time with his legs as expected, or taken unnecessary sacks. The problem when you're the receiver is reliability/predictability. If I can expect you as a QB to slide in the pocket and find the open window, then I'm not going to start my scramble drill yet. But if you've had spotty plays with that all season including the game we're currently playing, then I'm going to break the route off early and work my way open because you've shown a tendency at times to drop your eyes, find open space, then look up for the throw. Which is something JF has done all season.

It was Fields standing tall and throwing with anticipation in a pocket after having time to throw then needing to slide his feet and 'drift' from pressure. Something he has struggled with at points during the back 9 of this season. If that wasn't the case, then I'm almost 100% positive Chris would have kept his route going across the DB and that would have been a TD.

What pisses me off is we are the better team. This was our real shot at a Natty. There was no question OSU and LSU were the best teams in the country and I really wanted us to play them. I would have rather been a 4 seed so we could have played them. I felt like we would have matched up really well against LSU and our D would not allow Burrows to go off and I wanted to see if that proved true.

Instead we do some bad plays (red zone and punt block and targeting) and get hosed on a couple calls/no calls and here we are.

Not gonna hold anything against Olave. Great player, clutch all year. But shit just happens. That's all I can say about this as game.

It's frustrating too because I feel that can be said about a lot of these what if games as of recent. OSU is surely in a golden era, but feels like they should have a few more NCs to go along with it. Hate the feeling of being so close but something always goes wrong.
