Pretty wretched weekend for OSU sports but at least the football team gave a decent showing despite a lot of missed opportunities. This was not good basketball by our Buckeyes. It was actually pretty awful basketball. And I am very confused by the coaching in the second half.

It might be safe to say that we are a top half B1G team this season but I am feeling some trepidation about these recurring issues since the Minny game that Holtmann can't seem to minimize. I don't feel like I am seeing us get better as a team--it feels like we are regressing if anything, which feels too much like last season. The UK win gives me some hope that once again the long break, and maybe a late night watching the football team lose in painful fashion, has momentarily bumped us off our game again.

turnover percentages of our closest games and losses

cincinnati - 23.1%
minnesota - 19.3%
kentucky - 21.4%
west virginia - will be well over 30%

today's game will probably drop osu below the 50th percentile (among 353 teams) in turnover percentage. maybe now the players and the coaches will wake up, though i'm doubtful. in my opinion, ho1tmann is waaaaaaaay too lenient with his players. we're not there for the practices, but coach's sideline demeanor is too easygoing for my liking when the team goes into streetball mode. substituting for a careless player doesn't suffice.

People talked about how good our PG play is but the PGs really need to own the responsibility of making this team's offensive possessions count for something. Holtmann, too, I totally agree with you OSU_Buckguy, that he is being way too laissez faire about this turnover issue. I thought his Butler teams were good about valuing the ball, does the Butler Way not travel with its coach or something?

Sorry, I am just very frustrated because turnovers are EASILY the thing I hate most to see from the team I root for.

agreed, though i don't think "point guard" should be pluralized.

bad news: i trust carton to make a play, but i don't trust him to make the right play.

good news: so far, i'm very confident that we get carton for a second season.

don't think this is a pressing wvu team. their strength is in the frontcourt, and their guards have a tendency not to give their all. generally a pressing team will have a high turnover rate defense and a high free throw rate defense (i.e., turn you over a lot and give up a lot of free throws). that was 2015-18 wvu. this year's team, however, is 139th in trd and 245th in ftrd, which is actually higher than other years. they certainly get up in your grill to make you uncomfortable, but i'll be a little surprised if we see them before the halfcourt line -- at least not until the second half if the game is close or we're ahead. i think it would play to our advantage to play press virginia... and i think huggins knows that.

all in all, i think wvu is a better version of kentucky. they shoot poorly like uk does, which wasn't so much the case in our game, but their strength is the frontcourt while uk's was the backcourt. and as with my expectations of the uk game, i think osu will win if we limit our turnovers and hit the defensive boards. wvu lives on the glass. i hope we take wvu to the woodshed, but i think this will be our toughest game of the season so far. i'm excluding the cincy game since the first half had less to do with uc and more to do with opening ugliness. and i'm also excluding minny because that was tough only in the sense that it was never close.

edit: if we don't shoot over 34% from three, i don't think we win, especially if kaleb is not hitting from outside. our best weapon will likely be kaleb pulling tshiebwe and culver outside. could see ho1tmann going small-ball for a good chunk of the game. osu's guards versus wvu's bigs. battle of wills between ho1t and huggy.
yes, i'm the asshole who quotes himself.

i thought wvu wouldn't press. i was wrong. but who wouldn't press when the opponent turns it over 8 times in the first 8 minutes?

i thought we'd win if we limited our turnovers and hit the defensive boards. i was wrong and right. good on the defensive glass; beyond horrible with turnovers.

i thought we'd lose if we shot under 34% from three. we shot 33.3%.
