2005-06 Official Big Ten bball Thread

I tell you what, that 1-3-1 Northwestern ran in the second half against us and the whole game against wisconsin is tough. Mohamed Hasan(spelling) is a big body out top that makes it very difficult to get things started. Luckily we should have plenty of time to figure it out before we have to go and play them next week.

The NU game is clearly a landmine on our schedule, but I like that we are playing them twice so close together. A bit easier to prepare for such a different game when they are fresh in your mind.

Agreed there. We are gonna have our hands full in Evanston. These last three games look fairly easy on paper, but we have a bullseye on our backs and are gonna have to really get at it.

It will be tough, but we can do it. We are in the drivers seat now IMO.

The final three games will be tough, we will get everyone's best game. NW gave us some trouble early but a large part of that was our inability to hit open shots. Their defense was poor, we merely had an off day shooting wise. If we play defense and rebound, we will beat NW by at least 10-15 points on the road. I have to believe we can't shoot any worse than we did in the first game against them.

Also, not to be negative but cautious, we are not in the drivers seat yet. :wink2:

I agree. Having an idea of what they want to do against us is key.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Badgers lose chance to tie for league lead

Friday, February 24, 2006

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Northwestern 62, Wisconsin 51 —

Mohamed Hachad scored a career-high 25 points as Northwestern beat Wisconsin in a Big Ten game in Evanston, Ill., foiling Wisconsin’s chance at moving into a first-place tie with Ohio State and Iowa.

The loss puts Wisconsin (18-8, 8-5) in a tie with Illinois for third place in the Big Ten, one game behind Ohio State and Iowa, with three to play.

Vedran Vukusic scored 13 points and tied the school record for three-pointers for Northwestern (13-12, 5-8). The senior has 203 in his career — tying the mark set by Todd Leslie in the early 1990s — after hitting 1 of 3 from long range.
Alando Tucker scored 14 for Wisconsin, which hosts Minnesota on Sunday and closes the regular season with games at Michigan State on March 2 and Iowa two days later.

Ah the voice of reason, let me clarify. Our remaining schedule should be the easiest on paper. Whether or not they are is yet to be seen. We all know that we're going to be facing teams' best games, so anything can happen.

As cautious as I normally am, I enjoy injecting a little optimism here and there :)

CBS Sportsline, with the excellent research as always:

Big Ten (6)
Projected champ: Illinois.
At-large: Michigan State, Iowa, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Michigan.
Bubble burst: Indiana, Minnesota.
Ohio State's huge win in East Lansing on Wednesday night puts it in control of its destiny in the conference. The Buckeyes play host to Iowa on Saturday in a key game that will likely decide the race.

Illinois over Iowa by 12 with 3 to go. Time to start painting the baselines.

We have to lose TWICE next week to not at least share the title.

This has been one sweet season.

(Anybody notice Dee Browns new tattoo? It reads "What am I doing here?")

How many people would have been pleased with me guaranteeing top 4 in the Big Ten this year? Most everyone I'm assuming.

How about me almost being able to guarantee a Big Ten Championship?

Amazing way for me to end my 17 straight years as a season ticket holder

off topic, can someone explain what Wisky is doing? Are they mocking our cheer? (this is from the OSU game):

Well I projected top 3 in the first post of this thread.:tongue2:

But honestly if we got ot NW and come out of there unscathed we should win the big ten regular season outright.

This team is the perfect example of team bball and I can express in words how much fun it is too watch this team, win night in and night out.

No . 8 Illinois 71, No . 20 Iowa 59 —
James Augustine was so nervous that he shot an air ball on his first free throw. Dee Brown was 2 of 12 from the field.

It wasn’t exactly the way Illinois’ two senior standouts wanted to play in their final home game. But their teammates came to the rescue to help Illinois (23-5, 9-5) beat Iowa (20-8, 9-5) in a Big Ten game last night in Champaign, Ill.

"They both had special careers here, so we wanted to send them out with a bang on their last night at Assembly Hall," said Rich McBride, who scored 15 points to keep the Illini in the hunt for a third straight Big Ten championship.

The Hawkeyes lost their second straight for the first time in conference play and fell out of first place for the first time since Jan. 30.

"We’ve been in first place for almost six weeks. That’s a heck of a stretch," Iowa coach Steve Alford said. "We’re 20-8 and 9-5 in the best conference in the country and we have two big home games left."

It was the 111 th victory for Brown and Augustine, breaking the school record they shared with Nick Smith, who set it last season.

Brian Randle scored 13 points for Illinois, Augustine recovered from foul trouble to score 12 points and grab seven rebounds, and the bench outscored Iowa’s reserves 17-6.

"The bench did a great job. The other starters did an unbelievable job just to make our night special," Augustine said. "I think they consciously wanted to go out there and play hard for us, and to win another game in the conference."

Augustine spent nearly 16 minutes of the first half on the bench with two fouls and picked up his third just 33 seconds into the second half. Weber said there was no thought to take him out.

"I didn’t even flinch," he said.

While Augustine was on the bench, the Illini got strong inside play from reserves Marcus Arnold and Warren Carter. Arnold scored nine points, Carter had five and freshman Jamar Smith hit a three-pointer.

Brown scored only six points but had nine assists.

"I didn’t make shots. I was thinking too much," Brown said. "I’m going to continue to fire and do my job as far as being a point guard. We came out with a win, so I’m happy."

Greg Brunner scored 27 points for the Hawkeyes, but the Illini defense held Iowa’s other highest scorers down. Jeff Horner scored 11 and Adam Haluska was held to three, missing 5 of 6 shots from the field.

"It was almost like they wanted (Brunner) to score, and as long as they shut us down they were fine," Horner said.

The Illini led 34-29 at halftime and put together a 14-9 run to start the second half. Randle’s basket made it 48-38 with 13:35 to go. Iowa closed to 48-42, but an inside basket from Arnold and a three from Brown pushed the Illinois lead back to nine, and the Illini eventually opened a 63-47 lead.

"For whatever reason, on the road our defense has not been nearly as good as it’s been at home," Alford said.

Penn St . 68, Northwestern 55 —

Travis Parker and Geary Claxton each scored 14 points and Penn State (14-12, 6-9) took advantage of free throws to defeat Northwestern (13-13, 5-9) in State College, Pa.

The win assures the Nittany Lions of at least a .500 record after the Big Ten tournament, strengthening their case for a bid to the National Invitation Tournament.
Penn State scored 20 points from the free throw line (20 of 26), and Northwestern missed all three of its foul shots.
