  • Taking a break from coding here at work, I watched a couple clips of Ginn return TDs, and then watched Pittman's first TD of 2005 (the 67-yard burst up the middle). Pitt's run got me to thinking, just how many "big play" TDs did we have on offense last year? Sure, we had punt return, kickoff return, blocked FG, and interception TDs, which are naturally "big plays", but I wanted to see how many we had on offense. For purpose of definition here, a "big play" TD is one of 20 yards or more. So, here's what I have for our big play TDs on offense from last season:

Miami: Holmes 20 yd catch, Ginn 42 yd catch
    Texas: Holmes 36 yd catch
    Iowa: Gonzalez 29 yd catch
MSU: Holmes 51 yd catch, Ginn 57 yd catch, Holmes 46 yd catch
Ind: Holmes 23 yd catch, Smith 26 yd run
Minn: Holmes 41 yd catch, Pittman 67 yd run, Gonzalez 27 yd catch, Holmes 30 yd catch
Illini: Holmes 41 yd catch, Ginn 73 yd catch
    scUM: Holmes 26 yd catch
ND: Ginn 56 yd catch, Ginn 68 yd run, Holmes 85 yd catch, Pittman 60 yd run

By my count, that's 20 TDs of 20+ yards, and Holmes had 10 of them. We also had 11 TDs of 40+ yards.

I wonder what the record is for most "big plays" in a single season....

We got a shot at breaking it this year whatever it is.

You're right. The Buckeyes are currently at zero big plays so far in the 2006 season. That's pretty close to their number at this point in last season. It's also twice as many as they had at this point in 2001.

Honestly, it does worry me a little bit that Holmes accounted for half of those TDs. The good news is that the other guys (Ginn, Gonzalez, Pittman) got more involved in those plays in the 2nd half of the year, but I think it's a bad idea to assume that we won't miss Santonio at certain points this year.
