I've always thought that they get their numbers beginning or middle of fall practice.

That was my first impression too, but they must obviously give numbers out to freshmen who enroll early during spring practice (ala Moc, Rehring, Pittman).

Here are my top two candidates:
1.Doug Worthington
2.Freddie Lenix

Possible third:
3.James Laurinaitis...

I love the size, rawness, and potential of Doug Worthington, which could lead to early PT at defensive end.

Freddie Lenix can flat out just play the game. With his speed and versatility, he is almost assured to see the field somewhere (linebacker, safety, and running back). He could be a beast on special teams (Think Sirjo Welch???). I would personally love to see him at SS. He could be the next Mike Doss. Not taking anything away from a future all-american Donte Whitner...

James Laurinaitis (193 tackles, 28 Tackles for loss, son of a wrestler named "Animal", and also a hockey player)....ENOUGH SAID

These are just 3 guys that I felt might see considerable action, mostly on special teams, with the exception of Worthington....

What are some of your thoughts?

Good call on Worthington, I agree with you. His size and athletism mixed with the lack (thus far) of a dominant rush end will lead to him seeing the field quite a bit this season.

Alex Boone is in the mix for obvious reasons. Jamario O'Neal.....ditto.

Word is they are loving Cordle... already being in is helping a lot... not to say he'll end up better than Boone... but he's ahead of the game right now...

I'd say O'Neal has the next best chance because there is depth chart Room on the boundary... the rest of the guys should be real good players but there are studs/depth ahead of them... And as far as special teams go... lets not burn a red shirt for a coverage unit unless we need the bodies... I mean we have a lot of returning starters, so chances are, we'll see a lot of the same younger guys on the special units....

Maybe he forgot to put o'neal in there...lol. The entire state of Ohio is waiting to see O'neal play. With speed comparable to Ginn's, he and Lenix will be running down anyone we play...until we see USC....then Ginn will chase down Reggie Bush all day long lol.

On paper, it has to be Jamario O'Neal. The only two spots we have question marks are DE and Corner. It's quite hard to be a starter as a freshman at DE and CB, but CB is more doable. I see him breaking into the nickel formation (especially since undoubtedly someone will get hurt for at least a game or two) after 6-8 games (once he picks up the system)... plus he'll be a freak on punt coverage units I bet along with Lenix.

With our sudden lack of depth at the CB position, I'd say Jamario would be the best candidate, followed very closely by Boone. That guy's an absolute monster. If Rehring could earn PT as a true frosh, Boone will have no problem either. I envision Rehring and Boone splitting time at LT by the end of the season, allowing Robbie Sims to move to his natural (and preferred) position, LG.
