2005 Pre-Season Chatter

The offense should roll! I believe the emergence of a excellant OL will be the catalyst.

I agree 100%.

The success of this offense rides mainly on the o-line play. If teams have to respect the run, Ginn/Holmes/Gonzo/Hamby will be single covered. Thanks for playing, good night, and we'll see you next year.

If teams can play a lot of Cover 2 or Dime against this offense, we could struggle.

forget the wide open offense, i don't give a damn if we run all game long as long as we are productive and moving the ball on offense than thats fine by me. but there is no clarett, no eddie george in the backfield its two young guys who have a lot to prove and until they prove something we have to pass to set up the run.

and im tired of seeing a team of the ohio state caliber be such a horrible offensive team, what were those past rankings 104 114, ranked offense, are you telling me that there is at least 100 teams with more talent on offense than tosu??

this coaching staff has alot to prove on the offensive side of the ball, there were excuses in the past not his guys, plays to his personell whatever, this year everything is set with weapons everywhere, if this man can't get this offense to rank at least in the top 40 than you damn right we got a problem and need to hire somebody capable of running an offense, dantonio ain't here anymore to save our ass.

and im not saying fire tressel, but hire an offensive cordinator.

Hell, I thought that all the douchebag's stayed home tonight.......until I read this post. If you actually sit back and analyze what you wrote, you'd understand how assanine you sounded. No offense......blah blah blah...no offensive coordinator......blah blah blah........something needs to be done. I'll be the first one to admit, our offense has sucked at times over the last few years. But for the most part, they do when when the have to, and that is good enough for me. I don't care about clips on Sportscenter, I want a W. Obviously you'd rather sit around and crank it off to clips of offenses that score 58 points, while their defense gives up only 50. Hey, I think there is still room on the Texas Tech bandwagon, hell you could probably still find an open seat on USC's bus......have fun.

Not a chance. That bus was packed the day after the Orange Bowl....as a matter of a fact, I have a picture of the bus.

Offense:

I think Pittman, Haw, Wells and Schnittker are going to have a helluva year. I'm not sure about the line's pass protection, but I expect the run blocking to be superb. To that end I'm hoping Boone will be the beast he's expected to be. I don't expect the WR's to have to carry the offense.

My projected outta nowhere offensive stars: Eric Haw/Antonio Pittman

Defense:

Remember the difference in Will Smith from 2001 to 2002.
Think about that when you see the difference in Mike Kudla from 2004 to 2005... He's going to be an animal and as a result the collective defensive line will be a wrecking crew.
I'm hoping Jamario can come in and eventually settle the boundary corner issue, but after the spring game I'm comfortable with the talent we have to fill that position.

My projected outta nowhere defensive stars: Mike Kudla/David Patterson

Special teams:

Ted Ginn's presence is going to totally change how our opponents approach the punt game. My guess is teams will more-often-than-not kick it out of bounds or go for it on 4th down when they ordinarily wouldn't have, rather than put it in his hands. Josh Huston will be unbelievable if the snaps are there. Tressel does it again with Huston up for the Groza. AJ Trepasso was also a fair running back who I guarantee will make at least one critical trick play in a big game - Michigan maybe?

My projected outta nowhere special teams stars: Josh Huston/AJ Trepasso

The offense averaged 243 yds/game the last 2 games against Michigan and Oklahoma State. That would rank Ohio State #24 in the country in total offense. That was with both Zwick and Smith.

How we finished and the momentum carrying into next season is what has fans more optimistic.

back on topic. i hope richardson finds his motor, get's it running, keep's it running all season and turns into a junior version of will smith. god, that's exactly what we need.

back off topic. my worst fear is we don't see the consistency and/or improvement from either one of the top 2 qb's. (for the record i'm a big fan of both, and i think either one can lead this team)

I would highly suggest all of you stop suggesting that his opinion about offense somehow translates to being a tool. He had an opinion daddyphatsacs didn't like and was deemed a douchebag for it.

All smackbuck said was daddy, you're being stupid; I'm here to talk about offense.

And since daddyphatsacs has been here longer, apparently he has the divine right to flip out on a guy and dub him a douchebag simply b/c he is going to be demanding about the offense this year.

I understand jumping on someone when the start the animosity, but smackbuck didn't do anything here except post his opinion about the offense where he was upset that it had been anemic, which it had been. He admitted there had been excuses in the past, but this year there not be any.

Someone please explain how that gives daddy the right to move beyond "your post is dumb" and dub him a "douchebag."

Although I agree with the general idea behind your post, I think you have a typo. I'm sure the Bucks averaged more than 243 per game. Hell, they got to 300 in the second quarter in the scUM game.

Did you mean 423? 443? I'm not sure what the number should be.

Against scUM, 47 rushes for 205, 13-23 passing for 241 = 446
In Alamo Bowl, 42 rushes for 214, 17-27 passing for 189 = 403

avg of 424.5

What's really nice is the average rush of 4.7, and the 60% completion % with an average of 8.6 yards per attempt. I could live with those numbers over the course of a year.

Actually it doesn't, though I feel that I find myself defending our offense quite a bit, so that is probably what provoked me. By the way Buckeyefromscum, were you dubbed a douchebag at some point in your life? You seem to get a little defensive with that word. I meant nothing personal by saying it, it's much like me calling someone a cheeseball......I wasn't berating him. Sorry to get your panties all bunched up. :wink2: By the way, when your name is Smackbuck you kind of invite that kind of conversation in my opinion. I take it as someone who invites "smack" talk, call it a personal issue I guess.....sorry if I jumped the gun with a premature "douchebag" declaration, I'll be a little more reluctant to declare it next time.

After the last few seasons there are always 100 threads talking about the anemic offense. After a while it becomes quite redundant, and carries the same talking points. I think we all have figured out that something needed to be changed midpoint last season, which it was against Michigan and Ok. St. The playcalling isn't to blame, because if executed, any play can be a successful one. What is boils down to is the lack of production from our offensive line. If they open holes, we can run. If they keep the pass rush off our QB's, we can pass.

Smack was blaming the playcalling, which was quite similar late last season as it was early in the season......the only difference was execution. OSU did take the necessary changes, and pretty much made Peterson head of the OL late in the season, and you could see the results.....don't ya think? So to sit here and say "Well, we had better have a top 40 offense, or someone should be fired" really is a moot talking point, because I feel (im sure many agree) that our coaching staff has done a nice job reversing the offensive trends, and I have confidence that they will continue to do so. Last time I checked we were just fans, they are the coaches.
