2006-07 Men's Basketball Coaches and AP Polls

Actually jo, I think it is important. If you can land one of the top 3 #1 seeds, you avoid having to meet any of the other top 5 teams in the nation until the Final Four. That being important because it is basically a national consensus that the top 5 teams are head and shoulders above the rest.

And yes, I know it was without Oden but he only plays 20 minutes a game, anyway.

That's just not true. Oden is 3rd on the team, averaging 29.5 minutes per game. Only Butler (30.7) and Conley (30.2) average more minutes per game. And the fewest minutes Oden has played in any game this season is 21.

yes and no. i agree with you.

but this teams goal should be better than final fours... if you want a culture change that shouldnt be the goal. i have a hard time trusting that matta is coaching for a final four, and i damn well hope hes nto selling that. if he is hes selling himself short of what is out there...

like i said, its the point in the season that you have to win every game, no matter if the marion branch is on the other bench or if its the boston celtics (not the modern day image of the celtics but the ones of the mid 50s and 60s.... [i hate how i have to clarify that])

this team will have to beat quality opponents and if they want a place in history so be it.

at this point though i really would like to see a burr up someones ass... however that comes via a perry carter elbow or two, one of the kids stepping up. but im to the point where at this juncture of the season its put up or shut up time...

Although tOSU has to be named #1 in both polls now, it will be interesting to see how many #1 votes go to UCLA, since they're really the only other team that can make a reasonable claim this week, and there seems to be a group of media members/voters out there unwilling to recognize the Buckeyes as #1.

This will be the first time tOSU is #1 in the AP Men's Basketball poll since 1962. That is meaningful to me.

tOSU received 29 of 31 1st place votes in the ESPN/USAToday Coaches poll. UCLA is second and got the other two #1 votes. One of those coaches apparently voted tOSU #3, based on the vote totals.

espn.pollweek=17

In the AP poll, tOSU got 62 1st place votes, and UCLA got 10. tOSU has 4 less points than 10 second-place votes would have yielded.

I see it less as disrespect to us and more as coaches and the media voting how they really feel, considering neutral floor games. I've been wanting this kind of voting (especially in college football) for years, so I'm perfectly fine with it, even if it's tOSU getting the short side of #1 votes. I'm not responding to what you said, just to the situation. I'm not calling you out or anything.

Ohio State took over the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press college basketball poll Monday, the first time the Buckeyes have held the top ranking since 1962 when they were led by Jerry Lucas and John Havlicek and on a run of three straight Final Fours.
Led by freshmen Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr., Ohio State advanced one day after beating Wisconsin in a meeting of Nos. 1 and 2.

Buckeyes men consensus No. 1

Tuesday, February 27, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- Time for Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr. and Ron Lewis to be mentioned, at least briefly, with Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek, Bob Knight and the greatest era in Ohio State basketball.
The Buckeyes moved to No. 1 in both the Associated Press and coaches polls Monday, the first time Ohio State has topped the AP poll since losing the 1962 national title game. Those Lucas-led Buckeyes won the 1960 national title, then held the No. 1 ranking through the next two regular seasons before losing to Cincinnati in consecutive national title games. Ohio State topped the coaches poll last week but was second to Wisconsin in the AP.

Buckeyes finish first in AP poll; Florida is third
Tuesday, March 13, 2007

Ohio State, Kansas, Florida and North Carolina - the No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament - held the top four spots in the final Associated Press college basketball poll Monday.

The Buckeyes (30-3), who beat Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game on Sunday, were No. 1 in the Top 25 for the third straight week, receiving all but one first-place vote and 1,799 points from the 72-member national media panel. It is the third time Ohio State finished No. 1 in the final poll. Both other times, 1961 and 1962, the Buckeyes lost to Cincinnati in the national championship game.
