2006 Notes (and Babb's comparison to 2002 defense) merged

I know I am going to be a little optimistic with this post so hold on.

First I want to look at the schedule, we don't have that killer bye week, like we have been having. Our toughest games will be just like this year, @ Texas, vs. PSU, @ Iowa, vs. scUM.

Those were our toughest game this year and they will be next year. I think if we could somehow squeak one out in Texas, I know it is possible we could be lookin' at one helluva year. The schedule would then set up nicely until we go to Iowa. They will be strong next year so I look this to be a big test.

Now what is one thing all national title contendors have in common, a great leader under center. We will have that with Smith. He has showed that he will come to play in big games, Yeah(save the PSU comments), he has brought us back against MSU and scUM and led us to big victories. He will have all spring, summer and fall to break in one or two new recievers, but look for Gonzo, Ginn, Hall, Dukes, Lyons, Robiske to fill in nicely. Also we had the emergence of the TE at the end of the season with Frost. This will be the key to our O' next year.

If you guys remember back to 02' what did we think we had on O'. Not a whole lot, we were looking for Ross to be the leader and we had no idea about the QB situation we were getting in. Well next year we will know who the QB is, we have one very good rb and two that havent even began to break into their potential. Then keep in mind we have Wells coming in. I think we could own the big ten in the run game.

Now lets look at O-line. Good Offense always starts up front. We lose two good O-lineman with Sims and Mangold, but the cover is not bare. We have 5 guys returning with experience and a couple more with 2 years under the belts in the system. I look for this to be a very strong part of the O' next year. We have 3 bookend tackles, and 2 hard-nosed guards. Now center, Do we move Datish there and put Rehring at guard or do we put the inexperienced Cordle there and and keep Datish at guard. Only puttin one or no new experienced people in the game will be huge.

I know some people will say well Tress is our coach, but he will have what he wants next year with a power running game and some speed and size at reciever and a very capable QB. Also keep in mind Smith can tuck it and run whenever he needs to.

Now on to the D'. We have one stud returning on the D-line in Pittcock and 6 guys with experience. I think Gholston could have a break out year, then there is Penton, Patterson, Wilson, Richardson, and Barrow. All have made nice plays at times this season. I think the big lose here will obviously be Kudla, but I think that Gholston could be even better than Kudla once he gets going. Also we have some guys with experience to keep them off of our lbs.

Yes we lose the best LBS we have ever had, and yes there will be a dropoff, but how much is the question. B4 Freeman got hurt he was showing in practice and the spring game that it was going to be very hard to keep him off the field, even with the guys we had. Well only that injury kept him off the field. He is going to be a force next year and with experience could be another great lb to come through here. Then we have D'andrea who started last year over Schlegal, meaning he had an edge then, so why not now. I think the year off helped him, he will come back bigger, faster, stronger, and smarter than he ever was. I think he could make all big ten next year as long as he stays healthy. It is going to be his money year, so he is going to be playing his heart out. Then we have either Hoobler if we move D'andrea outside or D'animal Jr. who played very well when he filled in against scUM. Another offseason for these guys in the weightroom will do wonders.

The wildcard in all this will be Kerr, he was a very talented lb at IU, were he lead the big ten in tackles, he was first off the bench usually in the middle and he will be a senior. He seems hard-nosed, so lets just see.

On to the secondary, we will lose a very big leader in Salley, but Mitchell as played well when he has been in there. There is no question this will be the most talented part of our D' but hopefully we can just gain some expereince and see where that takes us. I look for some young guys to step up for us here. Remember we had Fox playing in the secondary when we won the national title and he was only a soph.

Most of all I think that all positions on D' will be very good, with another year under our D-cord., I don't think there will be a huge drop-off. I think the thing that will hurt us is lack of a leader out there, and just overall experience. The best part about it is that the d-line and secondary have been palying together now for 2 years and our lbs have stuck ran together on second team and scout team.

They will also be going up against a very tough O' in practice so I think that will only help them.

On special teams we will have a new kicker, probably Pettrey, that has been the kinda the understanding as he goes out and warms up with Houston in pre-game and HUU has made some comments about him. I have watched him in warm-ups a couple times and I think he has just as strong a leg as HUU so lets hope he will be ok in games.

Trappasso will have another year under his belt and will only be better. He had a good year this year, so another year under JT's tutelage should make him pretty darn good. Good for field position.

Punt Returns, I see it being Youbouty and Ginn back there. We all know how dangerous Ginn is, Yeah he has fumbled as of late, but if you remember Holmes had dropsies early in his career to, so with all that talent and another years experience back there will only help.

Kick Returns, I see maybe Eric Haw and Ginn, both very fast and will be dangerous when ever they touch the ball.

Overall I would say right outside the top ten at 11 or 12 and with a couple breaks in the Texas game and getting by PSu at home and then a big one at Iowa, I see us maybe staring scUM down at the end of the year with us having a chance to go to the NC game. (optimism yeah, could it hapen yeah)

Great post, but how about JamO on returns? There may be some other stuff in there for me to argue with you about, but I'm too tired, and I'm going to bed.
Edit: Greenies to you, but not until about 9:24 am. :p

Yeah, but I think early in the season the coaches would like to have someone with experience back there, that is why I said Youbouty, also could be Gonzo back there.

No problem.

Obviously, we lose some GREAT players on both sides of the ball. However, I see the glass as at least half-full.
Replacing the LBs:
Saying "no real starters" is not really fair, Fan14.
Well, if you will remember, D'Andrea was the starter over Schlegel in '04 and looked VERY good until he got hurt. And we have Hooble to back him up.
Also, one of the main themes this summer was how to get Freeman on the field more, because he was really pushin Carp for PT. He may not be coming off the edge like Carp did this year, but he will do everything else to Carp's standard.
And also remember Kerr started a whole year at IU and has been in our system now for 3 years. I expect him to start.
Then you've got Lenix and Homan coming in, too.

Replacing OL:
We lose 2 awesome linemen, and really nothing else (no offense to Hamby-he was dealing with a lot this year)
We gain Rehring, Boone, maybe Cordle, and another year of experience for Barton, Datish, and Downing. Great depth here, too.
Can you imagine Boone and Rehring side-by-side on the left side of the line? Northern Illinois DL would have to be wondering what the heck they had gotten into!

Replacing Holmes:
Albert Dukes is Holmes, only bigger! (prob not as good of hands, though)

Unless Whitner goes Pro, the 2ndary will be better next year, I think. don't get me wrong, that's not a rip on Salley, it's just that everybody is 1 year better and Mitchell is damn near as good anyway, plus super Jamario should be getting alot more PT.

D Line we are stacked with depth, and we can rotate 8 - 10 guys through there every game and that makes a difference not only late in the games but late in the season as well.

If VY stays in TX (which I doubt) they will be VERY tough to beat down there, and starting with PSU and Iowa is tough, but after that, it's clear sailing to scUM!! However many losses we have after the Iowa game will be our total for the year - I'll vbet on that right now.

basically what I posted above Nightmare so I agree.

I think too many people are comparing this drop-off to the drop off in last year. We lost 14 guys to the NFL and a lot of very young first year players playing. We were also playing sophmore qbs and our running game sucked ass.

I think 10-2 is reasonable for next year. Quite honestly, I don't see a game on the schudule they shouldn't be favored in besides the Texas game though. scUM is always tough, but they come to the Shoe. So does PSU, who will return most of their offense (but not Robinson, so I don't expect them to be as good) The game at Iowa will be tough too.

This team should be a solid underdog heading into Austin - 6.5-9.5 points, I'd think. They're capable of winning down there, but it would be a definite upset. Our returning LBs are talented, but experience is what will hurt them against a player like Young.

If they beat Texas, they should go the the Fiesta Bowl. More realistically though, I think they're looking at a one or two-loss season.

I would look for us to be an underdog @ Iowa too, unless we come out smokin' in our first 5 games. They will be pretty good next year and will compete for the big ten, they have Tate back and they will be more experienced all around. Also they have great homefield advantage.

Truth be told, I'd probably take the Bucks and those points too, knowing how close this type of game usually ends up under Tressel. Most everyone outside of Columbus though will probably think Texas will roll at home behind Vince Young, and I can't blame them for thinking that.

Edit: I was just trying to illustrate how the "experts" might possibly view this matchup.

I think it's key that we had A TON of games this year where we were able to put in freshman and sophomores. This young guys have a lot more experience then the young guys of 2004 went into with. Plus...we are going to be solid at QB...and that really takes things a long way. We will have a VERY experience offense. The D-line and secondary will also be very experienced. The LBs will be young...but D'Andrea and Kerr have experience. Plus Laurinitis looks awesome. We have other young guys that should surprise too. Honestly...next year, I think our only ? is at LB. We really should be as strong or stronger at every other position. Our O-line will shift around a little bit...but i'm not worried about it that much. We will miss Kudla on the D-line...but somebody else will step up next year like he did this year. And we will also miss Everett and Salley...but O'Neil and Jenkins (who has tons of experience) will fill in nicely. Plus you never know who else will emerge.

If we beat Texas...we are in a great position to run for it. I don't think we need a NC though...I think the schedule and the way Tressel gets better gives us a great shot at a Big 10 title...and a trip to the Rose Bowl. And I mean...i'd love to go to the NC game...don't get me wrong. But personally, I think another Big 10 Championship next year, with a trip to the Rose Bowl would be awesome. If they accomplish that...i'll be extremely happy. A NC would just be a bonus.

because the buckeyes will be losing three stellar linebackers, our team will be going into next year's season with a bullseye on its back. the opponents will be licking their chops, thinking that it will be easier to score and especially easier to run. i welcome that with a huge smile. d'andrea would have been a big ten second team selection this year, kerr has already produced in a huge way at another school, freeman was battling in preseason for starting time, and laurinaitis will make his father happy. heck, there are others i've not mentioned, incoming and otherwise. call me a quack, but i think that the biggest loss on the defensive side is kudla. well, let me rephrase: i think that the biggest difference will be kudla no longer in the front.

edit: i think that osu's dominating presence at linebacker will continue largely because of the coaching. i say this with the utmost respect for hawk, carpenter, and schlegel. if the returning and incoming linebackers can digest what fickell and heacock teach, we can expect more supremacy.

The 2005 season isn't over and here we are with a thread taking off about next year. Don't you folks ever wonder if maybe we are a bit over the top on our interest in the Buckeyes?

Yeah, me neither  . Isn't it great to be a Buckeye fan these days and to have so much optimism about the future!

I think the moment I started really thinking about it was when LordJeffBuck started talking national championship next year. I think it will be a rough start, but it it not out of the question. I am very optimistic about next year when I look at youngsters like Boone, Little Animal, and Dukes and at what is returning, I suppose 10-2 is realistic but my heart says 12-0 with a bunch of wins based on passion and a sheer will to win.
