OSU Falls to Texas-San Antonio, 9-8, in Title Game in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Ohio State's Megan Schwab hit a grand slam in the fifth inning and Chelsea Baker hit a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, but Texas-San Antonio hit two late homers of its own and scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to top OSU, 9-8, Sunday in the championship game of the Hilton Las Cruces Invitational. Ohio State falls to 4-1, while UTSA, which led the nation in home runs last year and hit 17 homers in the tournament this weekend, improves to 4-1.

The homer by Baker (Sr., Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) in the seventh inning forced extra innings and the grand slam for Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain), which came with two outs in the fifth, was the first of her collegiate career and put the Buckeyes up, 5-3.

Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Ohio State scored once when senior Stacy Hibma (Buena Park, Calif./Valley Christian) drove in Schwab with a single, but UTSA reliever Amanda Nikolenko set down the next three Buckeyes to earn the win.

OSU junior pitcher Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) pitched into the eighth inning for the Buckeyes, striking out five, but suffered her first loss of the season after three consecutive wins.

Schwab's grand slam in the fifth inning came after sophomore Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) led off with a double through the left side, junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) singled and Baker walked to load the bases. The homer was Schwab's third homer of the tournament.

In the eighth inning, OSU freshman Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) relieved Juarez and worked the final two-third of an inning in the circle. Schwab, senior Billie Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) and Vanderink all had two hits to lead the Ohio State offense, which batted .340 in the tournament and scored 45 runs.

Koyano walked to lead off the game for the fifth-consecutive game and Carder hit a one-out infield single in the second inning, but both were stranded. Texas-San Antonio scored three runs in the top of the third inning as the Roadrunners hit four singles and capitalized on an OSU error. A diving catch in left field by Schwab kept UTSA from adding to its new lead.

Ohio State answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the third when Vanderink led off with an infield single to the right side, moved to second on a sacrifice by Koyano and then scored on an RBI single to right field by sophomore Liz Caputo (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly).

The Roadrunners collected two more singles in the fourth inning but two putouts by Carder, including a diving stop and throw from her knees, and one by Hibma on a bunt in front of the plate got the Buckeyes out of the jam. Schwab led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double but UTSA pitcher Ursula Mares, who went 21-8 last year, retired the next three Buckeyes.

Ohio State returns to action next Saturday and Sunday at the Stetson Tournament in DeLand, Fla., against Stetson and Central Florida.

No. 1 Arizona Tops Ohio State, 5-1, Behind Hollowell's 18 Strikeouts

Freshman Courtney Pruner's home run was the first run allowed by Arizona's Alicia Hollowell this season. The No. 1-ranked Wildcats topped the Buckeyes 5-1 Saturday at the Palm Springs Classic.

Feb. 25, 2006

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - No. 1 Arizona pulled away with three runs in its final two at bats and Wildcat pitcher Alicia Hollowell held the Ohio State softball team to two hits as the Buckeyes dropped a 5-1 decision Saturday night at the Palm Springs Classic at Big League Dreams Park. Ohio State got a solo home run by freshman Courtney Pruner but sees its record slip to 6-7, while defending Pac-10 champion and College World Series participant Arizona improves to 15-0.

Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) launched her solo home run in the fourth inning, marking the first run Hollowell has allowed this season in 51 innings of work. The homer tied the game at 1-1 and was Pruner's fourth long ball of the season, which already ties her for second on the Ohio State freshman home runs list.

Hollowell, on the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List, struck out 18 Buckeyes and walked two. She struck out 10 of the last 11 batters she faced.

OSU freshman pitcher Kim Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) worked into the fifth inning, striking out three and allowing just one earned run. It was the second Top 5 opponent Reeder has faced in as many days after tossing 4.1 innings of no-hit relief against No.3 UCLA Friday. Pruner pitched the final 1.2 innings for the Buckeyes, striking out three.

Junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) led off the game with a single up the middle for the Buckeyes, which would be Ohio State's only other hit besides Pruner's homer.

Arizona scored unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning and again in the fifth. In the second inning, Laine Roth walked, advanced to second when Adrienne Acton singled through the left side, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an OSU error on a grounder hit by Wildcat leadoff hitter Caitlin Lowe. In the fifth, Jenae Leles led off with a double and later scored on another OSU error.

Following Pruner's homer, Arizona's Sam Banister led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to put the Wildcats back up 2-1 and Arizona would go on to load the bases that inning, but defensive plays by Reeder in the circle and Juarez at third on sharp grounders kept Ohio State deficit at just one run. The Wildcats scored their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a bases loaded two-RBI single by Banister.

Ohio State takes on UNLV at 9 a.m. Sunday in its final game at the Palm Springs Classic.

Buckeye Invitational Goes to Ohio State After 11-2 Win Over Robert Morris

Douglas, Schwab and Juarez named to all-tournament team

Ohio State's Christina Douglas homered against Robert Morris Sunday and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

March 19, 2006

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State softball team won the Buckeye Invitational Sunday for the sixth-consecutive year and improved to 22-0 all-time in the event with an 11-2 win over Robert Morris at Buckeye Field. Ohio State (12-10) finished the tournament with a +15 run differential over its three opponents to win the title from Pittsburgh, which also went 3-0 in the tournament but had a +13 run differential.

Because of weather conditions, the tournament was shortened before it started from 13 games to nine, thus eliminating one game for each team and along with it the originally scheduled Ohio State-Pittsburgh contest. The Buckeyes and Panthers were both 3-0 in the tournament, while Central Michigan, Kent State and Youngstown State were all 1-2 and Robert Morris was 0-3.

Ten players were named to the Buckeye Invitational all-tournament team, including three each from Ohio State and Pittsburgh. Ohio State juniors Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson), Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) and Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) won honors, while Pittsburgh's Jess Dignon, Christa Hunter and Megan Bostick were honored. Central Michigan's Suzie Giroux, Kent State's Corey Houk, Youngstown State's Tiffany Patteson and Krystal Herman of Robert Morris were also named to the all-tournament team.

Douglas and Schwab both went 6-for-9 (.667) during the Invitational and combined for five RBI, while Juarez, who earns a spot on the all-tournament team for the third-consecutive year, went 3-for-9 (.333) with two doubles and four RBI and collected two wins in the circle with a 0.00 ERA in 10 innings with 15 strikeouts.

In other games Sunday, Pittsburgh topped Central Michigan 5-3 and Kent State 4-1, while Youngstown State beat Robert Morris 11-1.

The Buckeyes scored eight runs in the sixth inning to blow past Robert Morris (5-8) in the Invitational's final game Sunday. OSU freshman pitcher Kim Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) struck out a career-high nine RMU batters and scattered five hits to improve to 5-5 this season.

A solo home run in the third inning by Douglas, her second of the year, and RBI singles by junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) and Schwab in the fourth inning gave the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead before Robert Morris answered with two runs in the fifth. In the sixth inning, however, Ohio State sent 11 batters to the plate, with Juarez leading off with a double and later capping the scoring with a two-run homer, her fourth of the season.

In between Juarez's hits, Douglas and freshman Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) hit RBI doubles and senior Billie Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) hit a bases-loaded double to score three runs. It marked the first time since March 24 of last season in an 11-10 loss at Loyola Marymount that OSU had scored eight runs in an inning and it was the first time the Buckeyes had hit three doubles in one inning since March 20 of last season in a 14-7 win over Marshall in the final game of the Buckeye Invitational.

Douglas finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Juarez was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Schwab was 2-for-2 and Pruner was 2-for-4. The hits for Schwab extend her current streak to seven games, best on the team this season.

Now on spring break, Ohio State departs Tuesday for a five-day, six-game trip to California for games at Loyola Marymount, Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton.

Softball team rallies from five-run deficit

Saturday, April 08, 2006

FROM STAFF REPORTS

<!--PHOTOS--><TABLE class=phototableright align=right border=0><!-- begin large ad code --><TBODY><TR><TD><TABLE align=center><TBODY></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

The Ohio State softball team rallied from a five-run deficit to defeat Illinois 8-7 last night at Buckeye Field.

After the start of the game was delayed for 1 hour, 55 minutes, the Illini jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead thanks to three Buckeyes errors in sloppy infield conditions.

Ohio State responded with three runs in the second, a run in the third and four in the fourth.

In the second, Lauren Daykin hit a one-out triple to score Billie Carder and Jamee Juarez. Chelsea Baker knocked in Daykin with a single to cut the deficit to 5-3. Juarez then doubled home Megan Schwab in the third inning.

After the Illini (14-21) scored a run in the fourth, the Buckeyes rallied again.

With the bases loaded, Schwab hit a run-scoring single and Pruner cleared the bases with a double to leftcenter, giving the Buckeyes an 8-6 lead.

Kim Reeder earned the win to improve to 11-6 for Ohio State (21-14). She gave up seven runs (three earned) and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings. Pruner pitched the final 1 1/3 innings in relief.
Claire DeVreese (10-11) gave up eight earned runs in 3 2/3 innings for Illinois.

Jamie Juarez pitched a complete game as the Bucks won 5-3 today to complete the sweep of the Illini.

Jamie gave up only four hits and two walks the whole game. Unfortunately, one of those hits was a three run bomb in the 6th.

It was flat out cold out there today with a game time temp near 40 degrees

Ohio State Comes From Behind to Top No. 15 Northwestern, 3-2, and Complete Sweep

In her first career start, Ohio State freshman Courtney Pruner pitched a complete game and shut down No. 15 Northwestern in the Buckeyes' 3-2 win.

April 9, 2006

COLUMBUS, Ohio - In her first career pitching start, freshman Courtney Pruner struck out seven and pitched a six-hit complete game to lead the Ohio State softball team past 15th-ranked Northwestern Sunday, 3-2, in game two of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. After topping the Wildcats 2-1 in the opener, Ohio State (24-14, 6-2 Big Ten) overcame a 2-0 deficit in game two to notch its first sweep of a ranked opponent since 2002 and hand Northwestern (25-10, 6-2 Big Ten) back-to-back losses for only the second time this season.

Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) had made 11 relief appearances this season, including one the first game Sunday when she earned her first win with three strikeouts with the bases loaded in the top of seventh inning. Like she did in the opener, Pruner struck out Northwestern All-American Garland Cooper, the 2005 Big Ten Player of the Year and the current national player of the week, for the final out of the game.

"After coming in and doing well in the first game, I had a lot of confidence going into this game," Pruner said. "I relied on my defense a lot out there and they came up big. Our offense can hang with anybody and when put it all together like we did today we're a tough team to beat."

Ohio State is now 9-0 at Buckeye Field this season. After sweeping Illinois Friday and Saturday and winning twice over Northwestern Sunday, OSU notches back-to-back Big Ten sweeps for the first time since 2002 when the Buckeyes swept six consecutive league foes on their way to a school record 55 wins. It was that same season when Ohio State last swept a doubleheader from a ranked opponent (vs. No. 25 Minnesota and at No. 20 Iowa). That season was also the last time OSU had beaten Northwestern.

"My team really showed up this weekend and I am so proud of them," Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. "With (starting pitcher) Kim Reeder out, we needed Courtney Pruner to step up and she really did that and more. Northwestern is a very good team and nationally ranked, but our hitters really executed. We've been focusing on our sacrifice bunts and between those and a few big hits, we were able to win these two games."

Thanks to one of those sacrifice bunts the Buckeyes manufactured their winning run in the sixth inning. Junior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain), who hit her 14th career home run in the fourth inning, led off the sixth inning with a walk and was moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Pruner. One batter later, senior Chelsea Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales), the hero of game one when she hit the game-winning walk-off home run, lined a single to centerfield to score Schwab and put Ohio State up for good.

Schwab's 14 career home runs ties her for fourth all-time at Ohio State with Ashley Cutcliff (2003-05).

The Buckeyes tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning thanks to two sacrifice bunts and a Northwestern throwing error. Junior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) hit a one-out single to left field and moved to third on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by junior Lauren Daykin (Melbourne, Australia/Manatee C.C., Fla.). One batter later, junior Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) laid down a suicide squeeze to score Juarez.

Northwestern pitcher Courtnay Foster, who was drafted in the fourth round of the National Pro Fastpitch League in February, falls to 14-5.

Ohio State returns to action at 5 p.m. Tuesday when Toledo visits Buckeye Field for a doubleheader.

Seven-Run First Inning Leads to Ohio State's 13-8 Win over Toledo in Game Two

Chelsea Baker's first-inning grand slam and six RBI propelled Ohio State to a 13-8 win over Toledo in game two Tuesday.

April 11, 2006

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior Chelsea Baker's first career grand slam ignited a seven-run first inning and propelled the Ohio State softball team to a 13-8 win over Toledo Tuesday in the second game of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. Notching a season high for runs scored, Ohio State (26-14, 6-2 Big Ten) improves to 11-0 at Buckeye Field this season and sweeps Toledo (11-25, 1-5 Mid-American Conference) for the fourth-consecutive time dating back to 1996.

The Buckeyes added five runs in the fourth inning and one in the sixth and are now 17-4 in their last 21 games. At the 40-game mark of the season, Ohio State's 26-14 record is tied for the third-best record at this point in the season in program history (32-8 after 40 games in 2002, 28-12 in 2001).

The Rockets scored twice in the fifth inning and three times in the sixth in a comeback effort.

The home run for Baker (Gahanna, Ohio/DeSales) was her fifth of the season and 12th of her career and helped the Buckeyes improve to 94-10 in non-conference home games under OSU 10th-year head coach Linda Kalafatis. Baker ended the game with a career-high six RBI.

OSU freshman pitcher Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) improved to 3-0, striking out six. Junior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) worked the final 1.1 innings in relief.

The two teams combined for 10 runs in a 38-minute first inning. The Rockets sent eight batters to the plate in their half of the frame before the Buckeyes sent 13. Baker, whose walk-off home run beat No. 15 Northwestern Sunday, drove in juniors Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) and Christina Douglas (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson), who had singled, and junior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain), who was hit by a pitch.

After Baker's grand slam, senior Billie Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) tripled and scored on an RBI single by freshman Cortney Cannon (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby), whole scored on an RBI single by Douglas.

In the fourth inning, a double by Pruner, a triple by Baker and singles by junior Lauren Daykin (Melbourne, Australia/Manatee C.C., Fla.), senior Stacy Hibma (Buena Park, Calif./Valley Christian) and Koyano were the big hits in OSU's five-run inning. Cannon drove in her second run of the game in the sixth inning with a fielder's choice grounder.

Hibma went 3-for-3 in Ohio State's 14-hit attack. Koyano, Baker and Carder all added two hits.

Ohio State returns to action at noon Sunday when the Buckeyes host Minnesota in a doubleheader.

Buckeyes sweep Minnesota

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Behind a three-hit shutout from freshman Kim Reeder, the Ohio State softball team won its 10th-consecutive game and improved to 13-0 at Buckeye Field this season with a 9-0 win over Minnesota Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. The Buckeyes (28-14, 8-2 Big Ten) sweep their third-consecutive Big Ten opponent and scored 18 runs Sunday against the Gophers (12-25, 1-11 Big Ten).

The 10-game winning streak is the fifth-best in OSU history as the Buckeyes improve to 19-4 in their last 23 games. Depending on results from around the Big Ten Sunday, Ohio State could gain a share of the league lead with three weeks to play.

"We have been emphasizing defense a lot lately and it came through today," Linda Kalafatis, Ohio State head coach, said. "And as long we keep swinging the bats and pitching like that we'll be competitive. This team loves challenges and we met the challenge today. Next week is a whole new challenge, first in the non-conference games and then with Michigan and Michigan State."

Like it did in the first game Sunday, Ohio State scored five runs in the first inning on four hits and three walks. The Buckeyes added four runs in the second inning and Reeder (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) held the Gophers hitless through four innings as OSU notched the five-inning mercy rule win. The three consecutive Big Ten sweeps is the first for the Buckeyes since they swept six straight league foes in 2002.

Retiring 10 of the first 11 batter she faced, Reeder improves to 4-0 in the Big Ten and 12-6 on the season. She struck out three and walked only one and has now won eight of her last nine decisions.

Three Buckeyes had two hits each, including senior Billie Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina), who drove in three runs with a first inning single and a second-inning double. Junior Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) hit a two-RBI double in the first inning and freshman Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) hit a two-RBI triple, her second of the day, in the second inning.

Junior Nycole Koyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut) and sophomore Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) had two hits and scored two runs. Koyano stole her Big Ten-leading 22nd base of the season.

Ohio State returns to action at 5 p.m. Tuesday when the Buckeyes host IUPUI in a doubleheader.
