The preseason polls will soon be upon us and it would be nice to keep these in one thread.

Dennis Dodd is giving the boys some real love in his preseason top 5 posted on http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball.

Shows a lot of respect for Ohio State when you can replace more than half of your starters and still be ranked #1.

I would rather be between 4-7 in pre-season polls. The only poll that matters is the one in 2007.

Not for sure at all. I can see us being outside the top 10 if the voters want to focus on the D. (which they only do when we lose 9 starters....not when we have the best D in the country).

Before we get too enamored with Dennis Dodd's #1 preseason ranking, remember that he had Iowa at #2 in his preseason poll last year. :tongue2:

I'll bet xray will be shocked by this poll, especially considering his thoughts regarding this year's UT team vs. last year's.

I do think it takes a special kind of idiot to come out with that list. On the other hand many of the top teams from last year lose a lot, so there aren't five clear teams to take those spots.

I agree with other posters that OSU should start in he 4-7 range and climb as the defense gels and the wins pile up.

West Virginia brings back a good nucleus of players and could end up in the top 3 simply due to lack of competition, but I don't like it. Nobody in the Big East should start that high on principle.

LSU lost 14 starters with big loses in both lines and will likely end up 3rd in their division behind Auburn and Alabama (tossup on who wins their battle).

OU does not have an offensive line or secondary. They also lost their backup RB and fullback. The will not be effective passing, and marginally effective running on Peterson's guts alone. They will be beaten by teams who can pass and slow down Peterson.

USC lost way too much on both sides of the ball. Even with their talent I have to put them third in the Pac 10 behind Oregon and Cal to start the season.

Next year is open to about 10 or maybe more teams. There is no clear cut number one.

There are a ton of teams that have alot of young talent, but the overall level of talnet isnt going to be waht it was last year, especially with all the juniors leaving early.

At this point it is very hard to predict, wait till after spring and then we should have a little bit better idea of where teams are going to be ranked.

Ohio State Spring practice starts March 30, Spring Game April 22
The big spring question is ... How in the world can Ohio State replace all the stars in the defensive back seven? It wouldn't be a shock if three Buckeye defenders (A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter, and Ashton Youboty) go in the first round of the upcoming draft, with more to be taken on the first day. There's no question the offense will be explosive, and the Buckeyes will always have athletes to burn to fill in the holes, but to immediately replace the lost production is asking a lot.
The most important position to watch is ... Placekicker. Obviously the focus will be on the linebackers and secondary, but placekicker is always a spotlight position at Ohio State. Last year, the big question was whether or not the program would survive without Mike Nugent, and then Josh Huston came on to blast 22 of 28 field goals and 44 of 45 extra points. Expect this to grow into one of the bigger battles of spring ball with an open casting call to take over the gig.
Spring attitude... We're a factory. Everything will be fine. Troy Smith and Ted Ginn Jr. are being touted as Heisman candidates, Antonio Pittman is a tremendous running back, and there are more highly recruited players on both sides of the ball to keep the interest of the NFL scouts piqued. While that's great, this isn't last year's team, and that group lost two games. Fine, so the two defeats were to Texas and Penn State, but the Buckeyes have to go to Texas on September 9th along with dangerous road trips to Iowa and Michigan State. The schedule isn't all that bad, so a win over the Longhorns might be the springboard for another BCS season.

5. Ohio State 2005 Record: 10-2
Why Ohio State could be the Pre-preseason No. 1: While he’s not Vince Young, Troy Smith is a special, yeah, magical sort of player who is clutch when the pressure is on and the type of star who can carry the Buckeyes to a huge season. Antonio Pittman will finally start to get a little recognition as one of the Big Ten’s best running backs, Ted Ginn Jr. is one of the nation’s scariest players, and the line, in time, should be fine. Michigan and Penn State have to come to Columbus, but ...
Why Ohio State isn’t the Pre-preseason No. 1: … road trips to Texas and Iowa are rough. The top nine tacklers from last year’s D are gone. You don’t get better by losing a linebacking corps of A.J. Hawk, Anthony Schlegel and Bobby Carpenter, and the early departure of Ashton Youboty and Donte Whitner from the secondary, along with FS Nate Salley and CB Tyler Everett, is significant enough to get opposing passing attacks salivating.
What
Ohio State needs to do to get to the BCS Championship Bowl: Beat Texas. In the second game of the year, a win over the defending national champions on their turf will be enough to get Ohio State in the top two spot and keep it there unless there's a loss. The schedule isn’t all that bad, Iowa is certainly beatable this year in Iowa City, and the defense should come around by the end of the year. The offense will carry the D for a while.
Realistic, feet-on-the-ground, goal to shoot for: The Big Ten title. This isn’t as good a team as last year’s killer, primarily because Mike D’Andrea and John Kerr can’t make up for the losses at linebacker. It’s asking too much to go unbeaten, but winning the Big Ten championship and getting to another BCS game shouldn’t be viewed as a disappointment of any kind.
The number one thing to work on is: Forcing turnovers. Considering all the NFL talent on the Ohio State defense last year, and considering the D finished number one in the nation in run defense, it’s amazing that it only took it away 12 times. That’s as many as Buffalo, and only Rice (11) and Illinois (8) forced fewer.
Biggest offensive loss: WR Santonio Holmes
Biggest defensive loss: LB A.J. Hawk
