Behind the Numbers
This early in the season, there are precious few numbers to examine; and almost none of them are relevant to this year's editions of the Buckeyes and Penguins. Since we cannot compare the teams, let's compare the programs.

More specifically, let's compare the direction the two programs have gone since Jim Tressel left YSU and came to The Ohio State University.

The tables below shows 14 common statistics and how each team has fared with respect to those metrics over the past 6 seasons. As the tables use rankings rather than raw numbers it is worth noting that, while there are 11 teams in the Big Ten; the Gateway Football Conference has only 8 teams. The national rankings on the other hand are nearly apples-to-apples as Div. IAA went from 123 teams to 116 teams over the span in question, Div. IA started at 115 teams and grew to 119.

The columns show:
Column 1: Category
Column 2: Average National Rank (ANR) 2001-2006
Column 3: Average Conference Rank (ACR) 2001-2006
Column 4: Change in ranking from '01 to '06: (Direction of program)

The most interesting comparisons here are in Turnover Margin and Net Punting. These were by far the most significant areas of improvement under Coach Heacock at Youngstown State, while they were the only areas that actually got worse under Jim Tressel at Ohio State. (OSU nevertheless had a higher average ranking in Net Punting than did YSU)

In EVERY OTHER AREA, Ohio State improved. In most other areas, YSU got worse. In the categories where both improved, Ohio State improved by a much larger margin.

So Ohio State has fared better in what is now known as the "Bowl Subdivision" (I-A) with Jim Tressel than YSU has fared in the "Championship Subdivision" (I-AA) without him.

This is not meant in any way to cast aspersions on Coach Heacock. He is a good coach. But from this analysis he doesn't appear to be Jim Tressel's equal.

Few people are.

The Lighter Side
Thank God. After another 8 months of off season, the 2007 football season is finally here. The last game I remember was when Ohio State beat Michigan to earn the right to play a team to be named later in the BCS Championship game. That team ended up being Florida. After weeks of anticipation, I fell asleep on January 7th. When I woke up, it was January 9th. I have no idea where the 8th went. I'm told the 8th occurred, and that it turned out poorly for the Buckeyes. But, knowing that I have never blacked out or lost time before, I am certain what happened was some sort of space-time continuum fracture or something. Not a lot you can do about that, I guess, so I just sorta dealt with it. Even if a great season ended up having no resolution. Anyway, it's better than the alternative as the people I've talked to who suffer the same hallucination of the 8th seem to think the Buckeyes got pole axed 41 - 14. In any case, let me tell you, I'm ready for some football.

Some of you may remember that last year I compared Ohio State's first 2006 opponent, Northern Illinois, to my little sister. I thought it was a fair comparison, though some Huskies thought it was in poor taste. So, it's with some hesitation that I compare the Youngstown State Penguins with my other sister. The one who's 17 years younger than me.

My youngest sister is a great kid. Being that I'm so much older than her, I never felt any sort of rivalry with her of any kind. Unlike my other sister, I didn't play games against my youngest sister with the intention of beating her down to prove my superiority. I mean, why would I? I'm 17 years older than her. I'm much bigger. Much faster. I've played every game against much stronger competition, and I've done so for years. It wouldn't have been fair, or fun, for me to have challenged my youngest sister to a footrace. Hell, she couldn't even walk and I was more or less in my prime. It's not like I could arm wrestle with her and expect any sort of resistance. I'd have been more afraid of snapping her arm off her torso. And, so it is with Ohio State and YSU. For years, there was no game between these schools because the winner is obvious and, in that football is a big boy activity, someone might get hurt. There may be some YSU fans reading this who get offended. I'm just trying to be honest here, I don't mean any disrespect. I'm just telling you, when I read that YSU has designs on trying 6 foot 1 inch, 170 pound Freshman linebacker Adam House out as a Rush End, I fear for that young man's physical well being. Indeed, you'll note the defensive preview section doesn't mention young Mr. House at all. As a public service, the Preview team simply will not allow the opposition to have 170 pound linemen. 170 pounds. Seriously? Two of him is about one Alex Boone. Indeed, Todd Boeckman has him by 4 inches and 70 pounds.

That notwithstanding, like my sister, YSU has grown up too. Listen, winning as many championships as YSU has is nothing to sneeze at. Four titles in six tries is impressive, even if it's against a competition level beneath that which we Ohio State fans are more accustomed. Fact is, YSU has been very good against like competition. And, it's true that my youngest sister is quite accomplished among her contemporaries. I'm proud of her. While I can't say Ohio State is "proud" of YSU, there's some level of respect there, I guess. Having the same coach on our sidelines as the one who led YSU to all its titles helps facilitate that respect, I suppose. Anyway, the point is this ... Even now, my sister knows she can't beat me at any sort of sporting event. And, from what I can tell, only the truly delirious Penguin fan harbors any honest belief that YSU will win this week. And, of course, that was only one poster on some board (he seemed to base his theory that YSU would win a close one on TE Louis Irizarry having something to prove), and he was shot down quickly by 'Guin fans. There was another who warned that the Buckeyes were in for a surprise because of the number of YSU fans who'll be in attendance. Apparently, YSU has sold their allotted 4,500 tickets and such a throng is riding in to town guns a blazin' (Relax Columbus, I mean the figuratively). I suppose a couple points are in order here. First, little message board buddy ... you could bring the entirety of your stadium, 20,630 people, and that would amount to less than 20% of the people in the stadium being Penguin fans. Likewise, as traveling fan bases goes, I'm pretty sure having dealt with fans from schools like Texas, Michigan and so on, the Buckeyes will be just fine no matter how many fans make the trip from Y-town. In any case, aside from these two folks, and most unlike what goes on before those crazy MAC tilts, it's nice not to have to put up with the incessant "You've never seen anything like player X before!" and "We're gonna shock the world!" and "Don't over look us, we beat Maryland in 1973," and all that.

It occurs to me ... Maybe I should play my sister in something. I mean, it's one thing for me to say I know I can beat her. It's true she agrees that I can beat her. But, in my playing against her, wouldn't I make her better when she plays against her contemporaries? I mean, isn't that what Ohio State is doing here? By playing YSU, they're saying "Here, take this big chunk of money, learn a little something, and have a nice day" aren't they? 'Cause they're surely not saying "We feel you will give us a game for the ages" like the Texas series, for example. So, I decided I'm going to play my sister in something.

Not sure what. But, when I know, I'll let you all know. I will be selling video of the event for $1.10 per household. You're also welcome to attend, but I ask that you leave all comfortable pillows at home (for 50 bucks, I'll lease you one), and please no cooking, or drinking. Water will be provided. For a small fee. I'd love to give you free admission, but I have other non-revenue events to pay for around here. But, trust me, it will be worth the 65 bucks. In fact, now that I think about it, perhaps I'll do the same thing the next week, but against my other sister (you know, the MAC comparable). I figure demand will be high for that one as well, so again, a buck ten for the video ... etc ... But, before I get ahead of myself, should I serve nachos?

Traditions & Opponent Perspective
As this season takes flight our first opponent doesn't seem too rich in their game day football traditions. However, there is one aspect of the game that Youngstown State is credited with having created, the throwing of the penalty flag.

  • Youngstown State University is the only Division I University in the country with a Penguin for a mascot and the nickname Penguins for their athletic teams. There are two accounts of how the nickname occurred, and interestingly enough they come from the same evening on Jan. 30, 1933.

The first account states that on a cold, freezing night at a men's basketball game at West Liberty State, in West Liberty, W. Va., a spectator watching the members of the team stomp on the floor and swing their arms made them look like Penguins and without a nickname, the fans took a liking to the word.

The second account came as a result of the trip to West Liberty State Teachers College for a basketball game late in January 1933. In West Virginia, the road to West Liberty that evening had been hit by a snowfall between one and two feet deep. The passengers in two of the cars found it necessary on several occasions to get out and help push their vehicles out of snow drifts or road area with snow ruts, difficult to drive through. During the trip, Bennett Kunicki recalls, the discussion of a nickname for the school was the hot topic of conversation. In Kunicki's car, the name Penguins came up and was well received by everyone in the car. Upon arrival at the West Liberty gym, the name was mentioned to the members of the team who thought it was perfect.

  • Pete and Penny Penguin are the be-loved mascots of Youngstown State University and represent YSU and the Athletic Department at home and road games, community functions and special events throughout the region.

  • YSU football played its first season in 1938. The program was organized by Coach Dwight Beede. Beede was the head coach of the football program from 1938 through 1972. Overall, YSU has had five head coaches in the program's history: Beede, Rey Dempsey, Bill Narduzzi, Jim Tressel and Jon Heacock. The Penguins have won over 400 games in 67 seasons of football; the program was halted from 1943-45 for World War II.

  • Former Youngstown State head football coach and Director of Athletics Jim Tressel left a major mark not only on the Athletic Department and YSU campus, but on the entire Mahoning Valley community. Tressel brought a winning attitude to the Mahoning Valley when he took charge of the Penguin football program in the mid-1980's. He gave the people something to rally around in a time of need and helped keep the spirits of everyone in the community high. Tressel left his mark on every one of his players and coaches who served at YSU during his tenure. He helped turn a program from a school that hoped to win every game and season to one that was expected to win every game and make the playoffs every year.

  • In the game of football, a penalty flag is thrown when a rules infraction occurs during a game. The creation of that penalty flag was in Youngstown, Ohio more than 60 years ago. The flag was officially introduced at the 1948 American Football Coaches rules session.

It was created by former Youngstown State University coach, Dwight Dike Beede on Oct. 17, 1941. The flag was first used in a game against Oklahoma City University at the Youngstown's Rayen Stadium. Today the penalty flag is used in every competitive football game throughout the world.

Beede came up with idea of the flag and had his wife sew it together. His wife, Irma Beede, later became known as the "Betsy Ross of Football" because she sewed the first flags together. He asked her to make a flag that had a bright color (red) with white stripes. The flags were put together using pieces of the Beede's daughter's old Halloween costume for the red part of the flag and an old sheet for the white part. She used some lead sinkers from Beede's fishing tackle box to weigh it down. It was 16 inches square with the weight all at one end of the flag. The flag has been modified over the years and today it is yellow cloth that has sand in it to weigh it down.

  • Since the 1991 football season, the Youngstown State University ROTC has been a mainstay at Penguin football games. The cannon and ROTC units are located in the Southeast corner of Stambaugh Stadium during home games.

The Army ROTC program has been preparing young men and women for military careers as officers for more than 50 years. One of YSU's most active student constituencies, the cadets established the tradition of "Firing the Cannon" at Penguin home football games. In 2004, the ROTC was able to purchase a new cannon because of a gift from the late William Fitzsimons.

The unit also provides the color guard for home games and does push ups equal to the amount of Penguin points after each score.

  • Each year, the Marching Pride performs at each home game to help cheer on the Penguin Football team. In addition, the band has hosted and performed for the Bands of America Regional events held at Stambaugh Stadium, as well as recent away games at Pitt and Penn State. The marching band is scheduled to join the Penguins in Ohio Stadium on Sept. 1, 2007, when the team takes on Ohio State.
