2008 Big Ten Football discussion

More great ESPN journalism from this week's Forde-Yard Dash :roll1::

"The Dash wishes to send a fruit basket and a set of steak knives to Kirk Ferentz and Iowa (2). Thank you, Hawkeyes, for saving college football from a third straight season of sending an overmatched, overrated and outdated Big Ten champion to the BCS National Championship Game. Now that Iowa has taken overly conservative Penn State (3) out of the title mix and Ohio State has removed itself with two losses in a season of great expectation, hopes are high for a worthy title game.

And the Big Ten is free to send its champion to Pasadena, where it figures to be throttled by USC (4). But the parade will be fabulous."

Big Ten Champion chances?

I apologize if this should be in a different thread, but I didn't see it anywhere...

If I'm correct, if MSU knocks off PSU in the last game of the year and tOSU wins out, we win the B10 championship by virtue of our head-to-head with MSU, right?

We win a share of the Big 10 Championship if we win our final two games, games we will be favored by in double digits, regardless of the outcome of any other games. We get the automatic BCS birth if we win out and MSU beats PSU.

Yes, I believe you are correct.

I would not be surprised in the least bit to see MSU beat Penn State, and tOSU end up sharing the Big Ten Championship with MSU. But because we beat MSU my understanding is that tOSU would go to the Rose Bowl.

Note: This is pretty much covered in the tOSU BCS Bowl Possibilities thread.

We beat Illinois and Michigan and we're co-champs, sharing with either PSU or MSU...unless PSU should lose at home against Indiana (MSU is off this week) and then beat MSU the following week with use winning out, and then we'd be outright champs.

Big Ten bowled over again; changes needed

By Ron Jackson

Ohio State's credible performance in the Fiesta Bowl notwithstanding, the Big Ten's football reputation continues to take a hit.
It may be at a new low.
ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit called the conference "a punch line" and "just awful" last fall, and Fox's Terry Bradshaw described it as "so bad." The Big Ten went 1-6 this bowl season, 9-20 over the last four years and has lost six consecutive Bowl Championship Series games (3-8 overall).
"The perception is that the champion from the Big Ten is about the sixth-best team in the SEC," Herbstreit said.
The best football players are in the Big 12, Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Big Ten still produces quality NFL draft picks, but the conference is not getting the results on the field.
You don't find the speed in the Big Ten like you do elsewhere. In Michigan's 39-7 loss to Oregon, Herbstreit said, "Oregon made Michigan look like they were wearing ankle weights." The conference has to rid itself of its smash-mouth, ground-hugging identity.
