2008 Depth Chart Discussion

Well, for the sake of this team going beyond this year, I hope we see Herron on third downs as well. That would indicate that he is good in pass protection - something that M. Wells has contributed big time in his Buckeye career.

If he's not ready in that department then I certainly hope that we still see M. Wells in that role this year, and that Herron takes notes. M. Wells' contributions in that area have been vital, and have been overshadowed somewhat by the perception that that he might be a disappointment as a ballcarrier (something I don't completely agree with, but that's a whole other discussion unto itself).

I think Boom as #2 indicates two things: how well he has performed in camp (he reportedly ripped off a 60 yd run and a couple 20+ yarders in the scrimmage), and Saine's lost reps. As the season goes on, I expect to see Boom and Zoom as co #2s. Abdallah over Worthington may be a result of DW's legal troubles, but it's not a stretch to believe that Nader has hit his senior peak. I hope Terry's 3rd string listing belies his contributions to the team. He's shown plenty of worth when healthy, he can contribute as a DE, LB, "Leo" hybrid, or possibly FB. Brandon Smith as FB is a good move. He's not likely to see much time at TE, and the two positions are not all that different. I think Herron is noticeably beefier than Pitt, but the style is similar. Herron can be an impact on short yardage situations, but has the ability to break it for a long gain.

Pryor at QB, Brewster at C, Cordle at OG.

DT starters are now shown as Heyward and Worthington, Gibson at DE.

Edit - It's also worth noting that Sabino is listed as the backup at MLB.

The other formations on offense haven't been updated at that link, but the nickel 'D' shows Rose and Heyward at DT.

On ST, both Brians now show at PR (no Ray Small).

I wouldn't be shocked to see JL at SAM, Sabino at MIKE and Homan at WILL by the end of the season - those are the Bucks three best LB's, IMHO. I'd also love to see some more of Brian Rolle - he, Hines, and Gibson bring some real speed and intensity to the defense.

I like seeing Heyward, Worthington, and Rose inside. Worthington actually played pretty well last Saturday, and Rose and Heyward give tOSU some athleticism (that "SEC fast and nasty" that Grad has talked about) at DT.

Need to see Shugarts at RT soon....

Could it hurt the Buckeyes down the road to move a potential first day draft pick that came back for his senior year to the bench?

Wouldn't it be more beneficial to put Freeman back at Will if that was the case?

JL at SAM, Sabino at MIKE, Freeman at WILL. To me, that is the best LB formation the Buckeyes can put together. Freeman was very solid at WILL last year. JL is very versatile. Sabino is looking like he could become a star.

A true freshman forcing a Butkus and Nagurski winner from his position? Now that would be some news. I think Freeman will keep his spot, although he may end up sharing more time that he'd like....

I have thought recently that JL was an outside guy playing the middle. Not his best position. Homan still looks like he's slow to react. We all know Sabino is an emerging talent. A true middle guy? I don't know. But maybe better in the middle right now. Freeman? Is having problems lately. Don't know why. JL, Sabino and Freeman?
Rose was doing things Saturday and I think that helps everybody on defense. Heyward inside was just a matter of time. With so many spread tema in the Big Ten I guess we are seeing changes to counter that, finally.
To bad Dorian Bell can't be here now! He is a monster off the edge!

To me he hasn't looked like a Butkus or Nagurski winner. At this point, moving guys aroud to get the best combo on the field seems like a good idea.

Hines missed more than a few tackles Saturday. Some of his angles were questionable at best.

Was it me or did Chekwa seem to play a pretty good game?

also... ray Small (aka "Ocho Dos") still 2nd at WR

And what happened to Spitler?? According to chart in 0zone he is gone.

Jam O'Neil and Washington have not reclaimed their starting spots.

And that Pryor kid is #1 at QB??? Who'd a thunk it?

I guess I just don't understand why all of these changes are being made or contemplated 4 games after this season has begun. I would have thought guys would be pretty well separated during preseason camp. I also would have thought that the coaches would have realized that quite a few teams have gone to the spread offense and would have put their best, or what they thought was the best, players in their positions.

I thought that Washington while he did not start played quite a bit on Saturday just due to the nature of the offense that they were facing. Troy is not a very easy offense to defend with all due respect to the coaches and players. They really do spread you out.

I know JT does not like to talk about personal issues but why would Ray Small not be the 3rd WR on the team and why would he only run one play during the game. That was very strange.
