Well, he also followed that statement up with "that is the goal." I may be wrong, but that kind of tells me he's stressing it.

Interesting, since I seem to recall him stressing Troy and Pryor look to throw first.

Imo, I took that comment as meaning winning was the goal. Just my .02.

OSU's Bollman says skill players are crucial

By Rusty Miller

What's brewing today with the Ohio State Buckeyes:
Buckeyes buzz
In the wake of the Buckeyes' loss to Southern California, there were lots of calls on Columbus sports-talk radio for the firing of Ohio State offensive coordinator Jim Bollman.
Two wins have quieted that talk.
Bollman, who also coaches the linemen, was asked this week if a great running back can cover up the mistakes of a mediocre offensive line.
"I think anywhere on offense you'd better have guys who can carry the ball and throw the ball and catch the ball and do all that kind of stuff, and up front we can figure out some way to trip them up," Bollman said. "That's what I think. Everybody always says it starts up front, and it does start up front.

OSU notebook: Freshmen contribute as simulators on scout team

Friday, October 3, 2008 2:57 AM
By Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State freshman receiver Jake Stoneburner most likely will redshirt this season, but that doesn't mean the Dublin Coffman graduate isn't helping his team. Stoneburner and reserve tight end J.D. Larson are simulating Travis Beckum, Wisconsin's standout tight end, this week on the scout team as 14th-ranked OSU prepares for a key game Saturday night in Madison.
"They've done pretty well," coach Jim Tressel said of Stoneburner and Larson. "They're probably not Travis Beckum, but they've come in and watched extra film, looked at the things that he's done in past years and this year, and I think they've done as well as they can."
Of the 19 freshmen Ohio State brought in this fall, 10 have played and one is injured and definitely redshirting, defensive lineman Willie Mobley. At this point, it's a safe bet that the other eight will redshirt, as well.
They are punter/kicker Ben Buchanan of Westerville Central, Nic DiLillo, Zach Domicone, Garrett Goebel, Travis Howard, Orhian Johnson, Jermil Martin and Stoneburner.
In the meantime, they try and give the OSU starters a good look on scout teams.

I think Stoney being Beckum this week is really going to help the D. You cant replicate what Becks means to that team but if I had to think of anyone that would be similar to his characteristics it would be Stoney.

edit: not physical characteristics but his speed, and mismatch ability to a linbacker or a much shorter safety.

Hopefully this will give the defense a similar look that it got in preparing for Miami in 2002 and using Roy Hall to emulate The Chosen One. The players had said that it was a big help in having them prepare, but K2 still made plays....so then again... I guess great players are going to make plays, but hopefully the defense will as prepared as possible.

Buckeyes take advantage of backfield threats

Monday, October 6, 2008 2:57 AM
By ray stein

Lessons from Saturday night's Ohio State-Wisconsin game.

1. There's a power of two

It's just short of incredible how much more dangerous the Ohio State running game is with Chris "Beanie" Wells and Terrelle Pryor manning the same backfield. Six of one and a half-dozen of the other generally means a baker's dozen of problems for the opponent. Wells' return from a foot injury -- and his apparent return to near-full strength -- has meant a profound change in the offense. Against the Badgers, it never manifested itself as much as it did on Pryor's winning TD run. Wells was the pitch man on the play, but he was in front of Pryor as the QB rolled left. That didn't stop Badgers safety Jay Valai from charging up and planting Wells, leaving Pryor with open spaces.
2. Still lacking heat in the kitchen

A recurring theme with the OSU defense is that a consistent lack of upfield pressure exposes the unit to long drives if the opposing passing attack clicks. In other words, OSU is a turkey primed for carving if the quarterback wields a sharp knife. Mark Sanchez? No doubt. Everyone else? Not quite, and that list certainly includes Wisconsin's Allan Evridge. The Badgers quarterback brilliantly led a scoring drive in the final minute of the first half, but overall he didn't have the goods to make the Buckeyes pay for their lack of consistent attack. The Big Ten's not full of ace pilots, but trouble might lurk unless OSU ramps up its intensity.

Ohio State hit hard, still hurting

By Rusty Miller

What's brewing today with the Ohio State Buckeyes:
Buckeyes buzz
The Buckeyes' 20-17 victory Saturday, Oct. 4, at Wisconsin was one bruising contest. Almost three full days after the game, fullback Brandon Smith said he and his teammates were still sore.
"Everybody's feeling a couple bumps and bruises, a couple of muscle aches," he said. He attributed all the black- and-blue marks to two teams "running more straight at each other, banging into each other."
Case in point, wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher and tailback Dan "Boom" Herron both sustained concussions due to violent collisions during the game. When coach Jim Tressel announced the winner of the defensive "hit of the week," he joked that Wisconsin might have had at least a couple better candidates. Sanzenbacher and Herron will be out a minimum of a week with their head injuries.
Freshman offensive lineman J.B. Shugarts (shoulder) and linebacker Austin Spitler (concussion) are doubtful for Saturday's 3:30 p.m. game at home against Purdue. There was no update on tight end Rory Nicol (ankle).

Buckeyes adapting to season of change

By Rusty Miller
Associated Press

Wednesday, October 08, 2008

COLUMBUS ? The regular season is half over for Ohio State, yet it feels as if the Buckeyes are just finding themselves.
The 12th-ranked Buckeyes (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) have inched their way up the rankings a bit since that ugly 35-3 loss at Southern California in mid-September.
"We can't lose," fullback Brandon Smith said Tuesday. "We've been saying this is a playoff for us, at this point in the season. The way things shake out in college football, we've just got to keep winning."
Since the loss, the Buckeyes have won three in a row, including their first two Big Ten games. They've gotten Chris "Beanie" Wells back from a foot injury, and freshman Terrelle Pryor has taken over at quarterback. Even though they have not won convincingly, they at least believe they're building some momentum for a stretch run.
Punter A.J. Trapasso considers last Saturday night's 20-17 victory at Wisconsin a stepping stone to bigger and better things.
"We had a lot of confidence coming into this season, maybe (we were) a little bit overconfident thinking we were just going to run over teams," Trapasso said. "We were exposed a little bit (at USC) but we've bounced back pretty well, and handled some rough games ? especially this (past) weekend."

Fresh princes: Pryor, Brewster among very few first-year players making gridiron impacts

by Doug Lesmerises Tuesday October 07, 2008, 11:23 PM

COLUMBUS -- In 2006, Beanie Wells was ready to start for Ohio State as a freshman. He had the legs and the shoulders and the stiff-arm, but the Buckeyes didn't have the need, so junior Antonio Pittman started and Wells averaged eight carries and 44 yards per game behind him.
"Physically I was ready," Wells, who was the No. 3 recruit in the nation that year, said Tuesday. "And with playing behind him a few games, my mental aspect picked up more and more."
That Wells did not start illustrates just how unusual the situation is for Ohio State this season.
With quarterback Terrelle Pryor (the No. 1 recruit by Rivals.com) and center Mike Brewster (No. 12) preparing for their fourth starts heading into Saturday's game with Purdue, Ohio State is one of only three teams in the top 25 starting two true freshmen at the moment.

Marvin Fong/The Plain DealerTHE FRESHMEN FEW

Ohio State is starting two freshmen in quarterback Terrelle Pryor and center Mike Brewster, making the Buckeyes one of three teams in the AP top 25 to have two true freshmen listed as starters on this week's depth chart, joining Alabama and Georgia.
TOP 25
Ohio State (2) QB Terrelle Pryor (above), C Mike Brewster
Alabama (2) WR Julio Jones, LB Don'ta Hightower
Georgia (2) C Ben Jones, WR A.J. Green
Texas (1) S Blake Gideon
BYU (1) WR O'Neill Chambers
Kansas (1) TE Tim Biere
Virginia Tech (1) WR Jarrett Boykin
North Carolina (1) DE Robert Quinn
Ball State (1) WR Briggs Orsbon

Among those top 25 teams, only 12 true freshmen are starting, and in the Big Ten, the two Buckeyes are among just eight true freshmen currently starting. Among the top 10 players from the Rivals.com rankings for this class, Alabama's Julio Jones and Georgia's A.J. Green are both starting at receiver, probably the easiest position for freshmen, for top-25 teams. But only one other team in the top 25 or in the conference is starting a freshmen center and none is starting a true freshmen quarterback. Teams can go young -- 2-3 Baylor is starting freshman Robert Griffin at quarterback and Michigan is starting three freshmen on its 109th ranked offense -- but it's harder to win young.

OSU notebook: Tressel questions hit on Herron

Wednesday, October 8, 2008 3:01 AM
By Tim May

THE COLMBUS DISPATCH

http://www.dispatch.com/osuchat

Backup tailback Dan "Boom" Herron will miss Ohio State's game Saturday against Purdue after he suffered a concussion last week at Wisconsin, and coach Jim Tressel said he thought the play fell under the Big Ten's crackdown on helmet-first hits. While running across the field as quarterback Terrelle Pryor scrambled, Herron appeared to be hit helmet-first in the head and jaw by Badgers defensive back Jay Valai and was momentarily knocked unconscious.
Big Ten officials said before the season that helmet-leading hits, outlawed several years ago, were going to be subject to more strenuous enforcement.
No flag was thrown on the play, but "as you watched the film, it certainly (was a collision of) two head gears," Tressel said. "Actually, in Boom's case it was a head gear and a chin, and the jaw creates some of the worst concussions.
"I'm not sitting here saying the officials need to be perfect because the game happens fast. You've got to make split-second decisions, and sometimes they get them and sometimes they don't."
Coaching staffs send the conference office weekly appraisals of the officiating.
"They ask us to evaluate what things do you think maybe could have been called or considered a different way," Tressel said. "I'm not pointing fingers that (Valai) was trying to do anything, but we're talking about how should the game have been called."

EDSBS ? Archive ? ASK AN OHIO STATE FAN

I had to come on today because we have kind of a crisis in the Buckeye nation, and I want to address it head on and just come out and hit it in the mouth, because that?s what we do at THE Ohio State University. We hit the shrugs and the weights and we then we hit people in the mouth like Andy Katzenmoyer. Just like I?m about to hit this red-hot topic right in the mouth like its name was Mike Hart.

Are you ready? Are you ready Ow-WAH-AH-AH-AH!!!! Get down with this sickness, Buckeye:

THE PISTOL FORMATION ISN?T GAY.

Can you feel that? Oh shit, there, I said it.

It started gay, sure. A lot of good things start gay. Like hair product, for example. I don?t hit the town without putting some shit in my hair to make sure I?m looking good, and it sure as hell isn?t my grandfather?s leftover airplane engine grease from World War Two. That shit catches flies in it.

No, I use a little bit of gel, which if you?re honest with yourself, is something that started with the gays. See, they?re like pioneers. Pioneers who try stuff so you don?t have to look stupid. When you see something you like, you take it from them, and then bang-o, they?ve gotta go try something new, because they don?t want to be confused for poon-wreckin? sex hound like me, because I?m into women, and they?re into dudes.

Personnel Update
By John Porentas

There were very few changes in the depth chart this week, but there may be one coming soon.
Offensive lineman Steve Rehring is recovering from his ankle injury, and according to Alex Boone, when Rehring returns to action he may cause a bit of a shakeup along the offensive line.
"I definitely think Steve will be on the right side and Jimmy will stay at (left) guard the rest of the year," said Boone.
"That's definitely up to Coach Bolls and Coach Tress, but the way it's working right now I kind of like it. I kind of like going next to Jimmy. He's different to play next to. He's funny, but it's working out well," said Boone.
