Behind the Numbers
Random Numbers from the Passing Scene

Heartbreaker(s):
2:_____The cumulative margin of defeat for the Bobcat's 2 losses to Wyoming. At least this year it was on the road.

prediction
> 2:___The margin of defeat for the Bobcat's next road loss.
Thank You:
800:___The number of wins Ohio State will have after the Bobcat's next road loss. Or had you heard that already?
Good Times Bad Times
14:____The OU record for receptions in a game, set by Hilliard's Taylor Price last week in Laramie.
prediction
< 14:__Taylor's number of receptions in OU's next road loss.
When the Levee Breaks:
13-111-1:___Carries-Yards-Touchdowns by Chris Wells on Saturday

15-69-0:____Carries-Yards-Touchdowns by Ohio State's other running backs on Saturday

Not to disparage the other backs - but we need not pretend that Beanie isn't a difference maker.
What is and What Should Never Be:
25.14:__Yards per Kick-Off return for the Bobcats last year, good for 8th nationally.

46.67:__Yards per Kick-Off return for the Bobcats on Saturday.

117:____Ohio State's rank in Kick-Off returns last year (as if you didn't remember)

So the Bobcats do have one point of superiority until the Buckeyes prove otherwise (Kick-Off returns)
Trampled Under Foot:
4:______Wyoming's rank in the Mountain West Conference in Rushing Defense last year

1.9:____Average Yards per Rush for the Bobcats against Wyoming on Saturday

prediction
< 1.9:__Average Yards per Rush for the Bobcats against the Buckeyes this coming Saturday
Your Time is Gonna Come:
12:_____Years (roughly) since the last time Ohio State completed back-to-back shut-outs (11/2 and 11/9 of '96 vs. Minnesota and Illinois)

prediction
< 12:___Years until the next time Ohio State completes back-to-back shut-outs

29:_____Years (roughly) since the last time Ohio State completed back-to-back shut-outs at Home (10/20 and 10/27 of '79 vs. Wisconsin and MSU)

prediction
< 29:___Years until the next time Ohio State completes back-to-back shut-outs at Home
Dazed and Confused:
2:51____Hours:Minutes duration of Saturday's game

2:47____Hours:Minutes duration of the shortest OSU game from last year (Kent)
The new clock rules are speeding things up in one respect though:
111:_______Number of plays run by both teams on Saturday

122:_______Fewest number of plays run by both teams in any Ohio State game last year (vs. MSU)
You can expect BtN to continue to track these numbers as we assess the effect of the new clock rules.
Next Week: Going to California
The Lighter Side
Trivia: How many times in Ohio State history have the Buckeyes lined up on 4th and 1 from at least 43 yards out from an opponents end zone, handed the ball to a running back named Wells, and scored a touchdown? Answer: Twice. Johnathan Wells at Michigan November 24, 2001 (46 Yards) and Chris "Beanie" Wells, August 30, 2008 (43 yards). Both runs were something of a "deal sealer" as the Buckeyes went on to beat both Michigan and Youngstown State on the weight of these spirit breaking runs. While the Buckeyes would need more to beat the '01 Wolverines, the '08 Wells TD was the nail in the coffin, affording the Buckeyes the ability to try out some other players in the final 3 quarters and 12 minutes of garbage time. See? A little history was made against Youngstown State. And they say 65 bucks doesn't buy what it used to.
I was having a great time watching the Buckeyes destroy the out manned Penguins. But, I momentarily thought coach Tressel had lost his mind when on the third drive of the first quarter, in comes Malcolm Jenkins at quarterback. What's this? Jenkins is, no doubt, a supreme athletic talent and his defensive prowess unquestioned. But, seriously, quarterback? What about Joe Bauserman? If we're going to go to a new QB this early, why would we settle for a cornerback when we have at least 1 other QB on the roster. You can imagine my surprise when I learned that it wasn't Malcolm Jenkins, but some kid named.... wait a second here... I have to look it up again. It starts with Terr.... Ah.... Terrelle Pryor. Anyone heard of this guy? He looks like he might be pretty good. That Jim Tressel seems to have a knack of finding the hidden gems, doesn't he? Anyway, I did a search and it seems Buckeye Planet has a thread for him (Pryor, that is) after all - somehow it had escaped my attention. I'd link it, but I'd rather you find it on your own. It's an adventure.

Shortly after the Bucks put the car in the garage after a nice Saturday drive where they were testing the newly installed cruise control feature, the mighty RichRod (and Barwis) lead Wolverines took the big stage against the Utah Youths. The sky was the limit for the Wolverines. After all, they have installed the unstoppable zone read option on offense and have the single fastest human being to ever live, Morgan Trent, on defense. What could the Youths do against such fire power? Nearly choke the game away, that's what. Turns out, you can't just line up in a spread and win, you have to have some personnel. Turns out that it doesn't matter if Trent ran a 4.13 forty or shuttle, the poor kid can't cover a washcloth. Really, all this was more or less expected. What I found most disturbing was some Michigan fan holding up a water bubbler jug with some amount of change in it, shaking it, trying to make noise. That's taking the "shake your keys" stuff to an all new level of ridiculous. Maybe they oughta just try yelling. Whatever. Hats off to the non-BCS darling Utah Youths.

Other things we saw: The ACC lived up to its billing as horrid, Penn State can crush the entire coast of Carolina, Notre Dame was able to leave the first week of 2008 with: A) more rushing yards than they managed in week one, 2007 and B) a goose egg in the loss column. Not bad, Domers. Not bad at all. Even better, noted former Coach Lou Holtz earned some kind of fake ESPN doctorate. Broadcasting for the second straight year from somewhere in the Caribbean, Good 'Ol Hurricane mouth sent a torrent of saliva and inanity hurling at the southern gulf coast. FEMA was ready this time, and we sincerely hope that this year's storm does not cause as much damage.

On to week two. For Ohio State there are really just two questions. First, what's the deal with Chris Wells' foot? When he crumbled to the ground on what would likely have been his last carry Saturday, it looked as if Ohio State's dreams were sustaining a serious blow. The sign of relief, in the form of cheers, when he walked back in to the 'Shoe after could be heard as far away as Beijing. While it is still up in the air as to the extent of the injury, it's safe to say Beanie won't be toting the football this week. Nonetheless, the man was in a lightweight air cast and not on crutches. Here's to a speedy recovery. The second question is, as with all MAC foes, what sort of garbage will their fans come up with? Will it be the "you better take us seriously because we've got an All-MAC stud playing on the D-Line and you've never seen him before" sort of blather, or will it be the typical "So and so for such and such a paper said this statement and it's nothing but an unwarranted slap in the face! I hope Santa Claus takes a dump on Columbus!11!!" remarks coming from the fan base. If nothing else, I truly hope these OU guys are wise enough to stay away from the underage drinking angle a lot of MAC foes would use in an effort to establish that Ohio State is corrupt.

Well, early indications are the later, though there is more than enough time for the little sisters to come up with the "you've never seen..." song and dance as well. Expecting a 30 second search of their forums to find such a rant, I managed to "get'r done" in about 10 as it didn't take long for Gman the Catfan over at Bobcatattack.com to post his umbrage at Rob Oiler's comment,
Regardless, Gman warns, While the witty "Buster" uses "Oiler's" words against him in a fit of Halloween party induced rage:
First, Gman.. if that is your real name... it's Rob Oller and he is a writer for the Columbus Dispatch. Even if it were possible that his comments in a quippy space eating section of the paper were somehow indicative of the team's mindset, you need to relax a little bit. We all realize you really hate being second fiddle to the largest university in the world, and that you want respect, and all that jazz. How your rage will one day change the world-view of Ohio and Ohio State, and one day you guys will get to do a script Ohio with a little TM above it. But, you're not beating the Buckeyes in football. It's reality and you need to come to terms with it. Your squad, a team lead by a man who insists on having a solid run game, managed a paltry 39 yards against Wyoming. Let that sink in. 39 yards. Wyoming. 41 pass attempts, 248 yards. Not bad, I guess... but again, one word: Wyoming. If Ohio State had thrown it 41 times, they'd have been upwards of 325. True, that was just YSU. I'll give you that. Point is, you're not moving the football on Saturday. Deal with it.

Let me ask this, rhetorically, as it is... What's with all the nitpicking? Why does every single comment which suggests this "contest" is not much of a contest send you and your brethren in to these fits? Seriously, what does a quip by Rob Oller have to do with how Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes view your favorite team? I'll give you a hint, the answer is "Nothing." You want to be taken seriously? Stop grabbing at every comment written or stated and manufacturing some sort of disrespecting, overbearing insult out of it. We at Ohio State aren't immune, as it's hard to find a Buckeye board without multiple "You'll never believe what Mark May said" type threads. But, at least we're complaining about a national perception. You've got a comment in the Columbus Dispatch. Just friggin chill.

And Buster, what's your deal? So, Rob Oller makes a one sentence remark in a local Columbus newspaper which you stumble across on the internet and your entire existence is ruined? OK, maybe that's an overstatement. But, really, now are you so moved by the remark that you're seriously going to make personality judgments? I don't really care what you think about Rob Oller. But, where you imply that his remark is somehow a knock against my alma mater, I take it slightly more seriously. Seriously enough to mock you on line. So, there.

Grow up, morons. You're getting a pay day and a beat down. Take your money, take your lumps, enjoy the weather, and go back to planning for your next Halloween bash. Football is something Big Brother will take care of for the state of OHIO. Got that? You can have a little go, maybe see what it takes to compete at this level - that is to say, you should be looking at this as an opportunity to learn from one of the best - and apply that to your remaining season. But, for the love of all that is not trademarked, just stop making yourselves look so desperately and clinically disturbed. Hey, I've got it... Give Doctor Lou a call. He'll help... and you're far enough inland that the mucousy cascade of aquatic fury won't ruin your weekend. One more thing.... just because I can, a final question for you - Oh, you see "H?"
Traditions & Opponent Perspective
Ohio football, like the school itself, is rich in traditions. Some Ohio football traditions include:

The Bobcats - It may come as some surprise that the name "Bobcats" is not as old as Ohio football itself. Up until 1925, the team was known simply as the "Green and White," the school colors. Eventually, it was determined that Ohio's athletic teams needed a nickname. As it would do on several occasions, Ohio brass put it up to a contest to determine what the nickname should be. Proposed by Hal H. Rowland of Athens (And Ohio Alum), it is said the "Bobcat" won as it has a reputation for being a sly, wily, and scrappy animal. Rowland won a $10 first prize for the winning proposal which was officially adopted on Dec. 7, 1925.

Colors - Originally, the unofficial colors of Ohio university were blue and white. However, in 1896, a newly hired football coach, Samuel McMillen, asked that Ohio change the colors worn by the football team to those of his alma mater, Dartmouth. Put to a campus-wide student vote, the olive green and white colors were indeed adopted. The green has evolved since then, becoming the darker "hunter" green we are familiar with. Interestingly, McMillen never coached a game for Ohio University. It would seem personal problems prevented him from traveling to Athens in the fall of 1896.

Mascot - The Bobcat mascot first appeared at Ohio's Homecoming game against Miami on Oct. 22, 1960. Wearing a bright green sweater and a baseball cap on top of his paper mache head, the Bobcat was a gift to all of Ohio University from the men of Lincoln Hall. Traditionally, the cheerleader who wore the costume also lived in Lincoln Hall.
Rufus the Bobcat -The school mascot is a fierce yet friendly looking Bobcat that is always wearing an Ohio jersey with a number "1" on the back. On September 2, 2006, Rufus was unveiled as the new mascot among great fanfare and atop a Harley Davidson.
The name "Rufus" was a popular choice as it refers to the species name for the bobcat, Lynx rufus. There also is a connection with Rufus Putnam, who presided over the meeting to form the Ohio Company of Associates that resulted in the founding of Ohio University. In 1926, Putnam, who was on the first board of trustees for the University, was honored with the naming of Putnam Hall.

Live Bobcat - Rufus, however, is simply a symbolic mascot for a live Bobcat. In 1983 in a contest held by John and Liz Gillam, "Sir Winsalot," owned by Ohio University graduate and Columbus resident Richard Widdis, became the school's official mascot.
Sir Winsalot called the Columbus Zoo home until his death. Waddis replaced him with a new cat, named "Paws." Paws, like Sir Winsalot calls the Columbus Zoo home and my be seen in the "North America" section.
The Ohio University Marching 110 - "The Most Exciting Band in the Land" is widely regarded as one of the best in the nation and was ranked by Link Magazine in 1996 as one of the Top 10 college marching bands in the nation. They perform at every Ohio home football game and have marched at other events such as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and numerous NFL games.

Ohio's Fight Song - "Stand Up and Cheer" Since the early 1900s, and based upon a melody originally composed by Paul McNeely, "Stand Up and Cheer" has been used to inspire the team and crowd at Ohio sporting events.
Stand up and cheer,
Cheer loud and long for old Ohio,
For today we raise
The Green and White above the rest.
Our teams are fighting
And they are bound to win the fray.
We've got the team,
We've got the steam,
For this is old Ohio's day!
Rah! Rah! Rah!
Ohio's Alma Mater song - "Alma Mater, Ohio" was the result of a special contest in 1915 entered by persons from all over the United States. Kenneth S. Clark, a graduate of Princeton University, submitted what would become the school's song, winning the $150 first prize.
Alma Mater, Ohio
Alma Mater, brave and fair!
Alma Mater, we hail thee,
For we own thy kindly care.
Alma Mater, Ohio
When we read thy story o'er,
We revere thee and cheer thee
As we sing thy praise once more.
Salute to the Students - Following every Ohio home football game, win or lose, Ohio football players head to the student section to thank the Bobcat's most rabid fans for attending.

The Cannon - After every Ohio score, an 1800s style military cannon is fired. When the Bobcats enter the field, the cannon shoots off a smoke "O" that can be seen for several minutes before fading into the air.

The "O-Zone" - The student cheering section at every Ohio men's football game. Widely regarded as the best student section in the conference.

Tail-Great Park - The park across from Peden Stadium is transformed for every home football game into "Tail-Great Park". The park features kid's games, live music, and tailgating everywhere the eye can see on game day.

Homecoming Parade - The annual homecoming parade at Ohio begins in downtown Athens and ends in the Peden Stadium parking lot just in time for the big game. Always on a Saturday afternoon, homecoming is always one of the highest attended games of the football season.

The Battle of the Bricks - Ohio's archrival is Miami University. "The Battle of the Bricks" is an annual all-sports rivalry competition between the Ohio Bobcats and the Miami RedHawks athletic programs. The name "Battle of the Bricks" evolved from each school's reputation of having a campus of red brick buildings. Each varsity athletic competition in which the Bobcats and RedHawks meet including tournament play is counted as part of the years series record. At the conclusion of each academic year, the school with the most varsity wins takes the trophy back to their campus for the following year.

The Battle for the Bell - Ohio also has a regional rival in Marshall University. The annual football game between Ohio and Marshall is called "The Battle for the Bell", with a traveling bell trophy as the prize for the victor. Ohio leads the all time series over the Thundering Herd. With Marshall's move to Conference USA in 2005 this rivalry game has been on hiatus. The series is planned to resume between the two schools in 2010.

The Baker Cane - Celebrating his 100th birthday on October 7, 1995, President Emeritus Dr. John C. Baker returned to Ohio a cane that had been lent to him in 1956 by Carroll Widdoes, then head football coach, to speed his recovery from a broken leg. Dr. Baker believed that the Cane was university property. In any case, it came signify a commitment to "honesty and integrity" and the cane is displayed as a symbol of that commitment
