Jeff Demps

About 25 yards away from the 64th annual Pepsi Florida Relays at Percy
Beard Track on Friday, Florida coach Urban Meyer was running his football
team through yet another spring practice.

You've got to wonder what will go through the national championship coach's
mind when he finds out one of his star running back recruits, Jeff Demps, ran
a 10.17 at the boys' 100 meters.

Seems like that backfield is going to get a whole lot better.
Demps finished the race .26 seconds ahead of the second-place runner.
The South Lake High School senior already came in with the fastest time
in the state of Florida, and now he holds the fourth-fastest time in the world.

Arkansas postpones 2009 game against Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)?Arkansas is bumping Texas from its 2009 schedule so that the Razorbacks can play Texas A&M in the start of a new series with the Aggies.

The Longhorns and Razorbacks, set to meet Sept. 13 in Austin, announced Friday that their postponed game in Fayetteville might not be rescheduled until 2013 or later.

Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long said that adding Texas A&M to its 2009 schedule gave the Razorbacks 13 games, forcing the school to remove one from its nonconference schedule.

South Carolina challenge keeps Spurrier motivated

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Steve Spurrier has never been accused of being the most humble guy in the world.

And for good reason.

The Head Ball Coach changed the way they play football in the Southeastern Conference with his Fun 'N Gun offense at Florida. He won six SEC championships along the way, one national championship and is the only coach in SEC history to lead a team to six straight seasons of 10 or more wins.

I guess I have to post this, since I doubt that Trey McNeil is coming back.

Vols defense shines in scrimmage

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A little more than halfway through spring practice, Tennessee's defense is looking like the unit coach Phillip Fulmer wants in the fall.

But the offense is still looking like the squad that was inconsistent last season.

DeAngelo Willingham had a pair of interceptions and Dennis Rogan picked off another and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown to lead the Volunteers defense during a soggy scrimmage Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

"Today was a royal butt-kicking," head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "From the standpoint of the offense not taking care of the football and not having sustained drives -- it was definitely the defense's day.

Wilson leads way in Tide's scrimmage

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- John Parker Wilson led all passers with 216 yards on an overcast Saturday in Alabama's second full scrimmage of the spring.

Wilson completed 17-of-33 passes with one touchdown and one interception on a tipped ball.

Mike McCoy led receivers with 92 yards in the two-hour workout. Roy Upchurch ran for 80 yards and two scores while Rolando McClain and Alfred McCullough were the top tacklers with five apiece.

Behind Wilson, Nick Fanuzzi was next in the passing, going 9-of-15 for 140 yards with an interception. Thomas Darrah was 5-of-8 for 73 yards (1 TD, 1 INT) and Greg McElroy was 7-of-19 for 48 yards.

Coach Nick Saban said he noticed "significant improvement in our ability to execute from last week to this week which is really what you are looking for."

Murphy shines at LSU spring game

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Last year's No. 4 running back for LSU got a chance to show his stuff in Saturday's spring game, and accounted for 197 yards and three touchdowns as the White team, with most of the starters, beat the Purple team 38-10.

Richard Murphy rushed for 145 yards on 11 carries, scoring on runs of four and 70 yards. Murphy also caught two passes for 52 yards. He took a swing pass and turned it into a 53-yard touchdown.

"I'm getting anxious to play, but I'm being patient," said Murphy, who ran for slightly more than 200 yards in 35 carries last season. "I feel like if I get in open space, I can make something happen."

Murphy's 4-yard scoring run in the first two minutes of the second quarter and Colt David's extra point tied the score at 7. Just before halftime, Murphy broke off his 70-yard scoring run to put White team ahead 21-10.

G-Day game draws Richt's praise

...

"To be honest with you, I felt pretty blessed," Richt said.

He was not talking about being sheltered from the light mist that did little to discourage the 19,874 fans who spread across the lower level of Sanford Stadium.

"I saw a well-conditioned team that has a bunch of good-looking athletes," said Richt after the Red squad defeated the Black squad 17-3.
Playing eight-minute quarters, with a running clock at the end of the game, there was not much time to run up big stats, but it only took a few runs for redshirt freshman tailback Caleb King to impress.

I mean that's all well and good and everything, but how is he going to take a hit?

This must be 4th fastest for a high school athlete.

From this article, the 12th fastest time is 9.86 seconds.
