2009-10 Ohio State Wrestling Season

Incredible match from Lance. You could tell how badly it was eating at him that he had never beaten Metcalf, and he took all that frustration out on the mat. Wrestled a fantastic third period, got Metcalf to put himself in some bad positions and capitalized on them big time. Just as impressive was almost riding Metcalf out in the second period, he may have done it if he hadn't gotten so high on him towards the end and had to bail so he couldn't be reversed.

Dunno what it is about Thorn that keeps foiling Reece but hopefully he can figure it out in case they meet again in the nationals. Reece just cant seem to get past his arms at all, and whenever he did today Thorn was able to roll him over to avoid the takedown, it was quite impressive defense. Colt also wrestled a pretty good match against Howe and his tourney was already a huge success just by beating Morningstar to get there.

Buckeyes finish a disappointing 4th behind Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The way this team is set up just never seems to play out well at Big Tens. On to Nationals. In any event, here is the breakdown:

125: Triggas did a great job this weekend. He won the matches he was supposed to win, got a fall, and majored Cuiroga to get 5th place and an auto bid to nationals.

133: Ditto for Ian. Losing decisions to #2 Dennis and #6 Graff is nothing to be ashamed of. Beating Stevens and Eren to finish 5th and get an auto to nationals capped of a very solid first Big Ten Championships for Ian.

141: Reece had a scare in his first match, got the major over Lynch to advance to the finals and then laid an egg against Thorn. The finals match was pretty boring overall, just not a lot of aggressiveness from either wrestler. I thought Reece had a TD at the end of the first but no dice. Thorn took his only shot of the match at the very and was able to finish. Very disappointing.

149: LANCE! What a fantastic match. Metcalf got in on Lance's leg early, but Lance was able to hop around and prevent the TD for nearly a minute. I thought he was going to get screwed when they called Metcalf for locking hands instead of giving Lance the escape, which eliminated his riding time, but he was able to get Metcalf on his back after they scrambled and pull off the win. Very very excited for Lance Palmer. It will be interesting to see who gets the #1 seed at Nationals now.

157: Nemec lost both matches and didn't place, but he really didn't do poorly and was more a victim of circumstance. He lost a close match to #4 seed Kerr, but then really got the short end of the stick with Kinser (#6 nationally) getting upset and meeting him the wrestlebacks. He gave a good fight but eneded up losing and getting no team points. I doubt he gets an at large to nationals.

165: A very nice weekend for Colt, though a little disappointing at the end. Beating Morningstar for the first time to advance to the finals was great and he gave Howe a tremendous fight. Scoreless after the first, Howe started down in the second and got the escape. 1-0 going into the 3rd, Colt started down and got the escape before Howe could get riding time. Unfortunately, on the restart, Colt lost his focus for an instant and Howe got the TD which was the difference in the match. Colt got out again, but not until Howe had gotten the riding time and he lost 4-2. If he keeps wrestling like this there is no way he should not be an AA this year, and I truly think he can win it all in two weeks if gets hot. Howe is the clear #1, but Colt can beat him.

174: Rella had a very poor performance this weekend. Losing in SV to Blanton wasn't that awful, but losing to Zeerip was. Dave should be pretty disapointed with getting 7th. He will almost certainly get an at large to nationals and I hope he uses this weekend as motivation, as he definitely has what it takes to at least advance to the final 12.

184: Up and down weekend for Mike. Got absolutely worked like I have never seen by Dergo in the semis, but came back strong in the consis, pinning Palmieri and then getting the decision 4-1 over Erwin (#2 seed and #9 nationally) to finish 3rd. It will be very interesting to see how Mike is seeded at NCAAs.

197: Magrum did as expcted, finishing 8th. Lost to people who are better than he is, though I had hoped to see a little something more against Powless. Don't see C.J. going to nationals.

285: An ok start turned into a poor end for Morrisson. Losing 1-0 to Wade was fine, but he should have beat Apland. He did come back to get 7th, beating O'Donnell 7-3. Corey will probably get an at large to nationals.

Overall, the only people who lost matches they really should have won were Rellas and Morrision, though Reece losing to Thorn was a huge let down. Lance's victory was obviously the highlight of the championship. Here is the video:

That was a fantastic match for Lance. Disappointed in how the team did, however.

Palmer got that monkey off his back just in time for nationals. Looking forward to that re match (knock on wood).

Anyone questioning the athleticism of wrestlers only needs to watch Lance hop around for about a period while Metcalf was in on his leg.

Congrats to Lance and good luck at nationals!!!!

Great job Lance, now onto Nationals. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the Bucks can do there.

The loss may be just what Reece needed to show how fleeting his opportunities are, he has all the talent in the world to win a National title, now is his time to put it together.

Likewise, Lance has to be high as a kite now, knowing he can beat Metcalf, a little more confidence in his corner and a tiny bit of doubt in Metcalfs. Lance has been close to beating him numerous times, so they both know that this was no fluke.

Colt had a good showing and just needs to put it together, his style does not matchup well with Howe, but if he can get an early start, he can beat him.

Pucillo knows how to do it, let's hope he gets over all of his nagging injuries and peaks at the exact perfect time and wins another title.

The young-uns need to get their feet wet at Nationals and maybe taste some success as they will be expected to lead next year.

The remainder of the team need to go out and have a good meet, and with the veterans wrestling to their potential, all of them catching some breaks and some of them getting some good matchups, the Bucks could win it all this year.

Another link for those of you interested in tOSU and HS wrestling (it's been given on here before, so sorry if I'm being redundant) 2010 NCAA Wrestling Tournament Brackets Released (3/10) | www.buckeyewrestling.com

Two things that I noticed with regards to Bucks with realistic National title hopes, is of course Lance being top seeded over Metcalf, but also Reece, though seeded "only" fourth would not have to wrestle Thorn until the finals, he seems to have some problems with Thorn, so let's hope he gets another shot at him and can overcome him this time for all the marbles.

I don't know if I've ever seen a picture that depicts both the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat quite as well as this one.

Stellar senior class has sights on national title

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Chris Russell | Dispatch
From left, Ohio State senior wrestlers Lance Palmer, Reece Humphrey, Corey Morrison, Dave Rella and Mike Pucillo

Corey Morrison was the odd man out.

After not receiving a wild-card bid into the NCAA wrestling championships, Morrison thought he would have to rely on the hope that his fellow Ohio State seniors would be able to win the national championship that barely eluded them last year.

But on Monday, a Boise State heavyweight withdrew from the tournament, and Morrison was given the spot. Now a patchwork group of five seniors that came together over three years will get one last shot starting today in Omaha, Neb.

"We all think that this is the class to get it done for the first time," Morrison said. "For me to get in as an alternate wild card just adds to the belief that it's going to happen; it has to happen."

The class started to form five years ago when Morrison and Reece Humphrey arrived on campus. Humphrey received the first acclaim when he qualified for nationals as a freshman.

The following year brought a new coach in Tom Ryan, a four-time Ohio state wrestling champion in Lance Palmer, and a transfer, Nick Pucillo, who followed Ryan from Hofstra. Palmer and Pucillo built on Humphrey's freshman success by earning All-America status.

After the school's second-place finish to Iowa at nationals in 2008 and Pucillo's national title at 184 pounds, Dave Rella transferred from Penn State to Ohio State.

The final move reunited four wrestlers who grew up together in northeastern Ohio - Rella and Pucillo attended Walsh Jesuit, Palmer wrestled for Lakewood St. Edward and Morrison at Shaker Heights. (Humphrey is from Indianapolis.)

"I feel like I've been with these guys forever," Rella said. "Basically, I went away for two years and came back to my friends."

Pucillo loses his pigtail match to Central Michigan's (and 3 time Ohio state champion) Mike Miller 4-2 on a Miller TD with 3 seconds left. I think this kills whatever slim chance OSU had a at a national title this year.

How last year's national runner-ups at 174 and 184 are meeting in a pigtail match is beyond me.

And now Triggas loses his 1st round match to Boston U's Fred Santaite 8-7. Triggas was down 6-3, fought back to tie it at 6-6, as well as locking up the riding time point, but Santaite got a late TD to pick up the win.

Awful start for the Bucks.
