2009 Purdue game thoughts

Kyle, your point has some merit, but this is a football forum. Why not discuss football strategy? My passion for Buckeye football runs deep to a fault and I suppose your passion for tOSU football is greater than most people you know. But hey, as cincibuck said, we're all on the same team.

I'm fully aware that when we talk strategy and wonder why TP doesn't make the hot read and throw a pass over the middle when LBs rush the gaps, Coach Tressel doesn't ponder, "Oh, how come I didn't think of that?!" But that presumption shouldn't preclude us from discussing tactics and gameplan.

For example, what were you thinking when the Bucks were 1st-and-goal on the three against USC? Did you dare to second guess JT's play calls? I was thinking (no, I was screaming at the TV) that a few QB sneaks would get the job done. (USC ran the sneak multiple times and it was successful every time.) Same situation last Saturday. What did you think? On first down, the Bucks run to the short side of the field and got stuffed. After the incomplete pass (which was a good call), JT elects to repeat the same play that failed on first down. Fourth quarter, down by 16, and we settle for 3 points after earning a new set of downs on the three-yard line. Were you frustrated?

Coach Tressel is an amazing coach. Nonetheless, second guessing has always been, and should be, fair game for a sports fan.

I'm tired of the idiots who line up to kiss JT's balls and say, "Trust the coaches."
There's really been precious little of this kind of thing on Buckeye Planet.

Those discussions are helpful to me, at least, because as I've often said I don't know much about the tactics and strategy of football and I learn a lot from those discussions here.

Second guessing is one thing; claiming you know more than our coaching staff is another. The former is human nature, the latter a litmus test for morons.

And that's why I hang out on Buckeye Planet instead of Bucknuts, Rivals Ohio State site, or Scout Ohio State site.

Although it is my understanding that the ESPN boards are much easier to use.

Amen. I don't even waste my time with those other sites. The mods do a great job here. I just think Kyle needs to have another beer and chill.

*Our D is stout, but there still seems to be trouble in coverage on the short out patterns. Their receivers were always open on the 5 yard out routs, and open by a mile. This is a concern to me as other teams will see the film of this game and see they can dink and dunk OSU all day long.

This is what worries me about the scUM game. They thrive on running that type of offense, and from what I've seen of Forcier, he can hit most (if not all) of the throws that the Purdue QB was hitting against us.

Again, I don't think that we will see our defense ever have the tackling issues that we saw last Saturday. They got away from the fundamentals and I'm sure are primed up to correct their mistakes.

Wow.

Not sure how I missed these exchanges or how it wasn't already handled, but the personal attacks need to stop.

Way over the line.

Sorry I jumped in. I just thought Kyle's post was out of line. I gave in to the temptation to stoop to Kyle's level. Feel free to delete the initial statement in my post. I could never be as clever as Kyle anyway.

Ohio State sees the light after taking Purdue lightly: Buckeyes Insider | Ohio State Buckeyes - cleveland.com - - cleveland.com

By Tuesday, that tune had changed. It seemed like everyone inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center practically knew the Buckeyes were going down against a 13-point underdog. Fifth-year defensive tackle Todd Denlinger said he had never seen the Buckeyes take a team as lightly as they did the 1-5 Boilermakers.

"To the extent we saw last week, I've never seen before," Denlinger said. "We didn't have a lot of guys in the film room. We didn't have guys staying after practice trying to get better. There was too much joking during the week."

Denlinger said Tressel tried to get the message across, but it obviously didn't work. He put the problem on the players. "I'd put that solely on the seniors," Denlinger said. "We've got to focus up as seniors and make sure that we don't let that happen again."

Receiver Dane Sanzenbacher saw it, believing the Buckeyes weren't mentally there. Receiver DeVier Posey saw it, saying the Buckeyes took Purdue lightly. Tressel saw it. And no one stopped it.

"I didn't think I did a very good job of getting them to really understand the challenge we had," Tressel said. "It's hard for people to understand the depth of a challenge, but I didn't think I did a very good job. I didn't sense that from anyone that, man, these guys are good or these guys, man, I can't believe they're not 5-1.
"And that's my job, that's not your job, it's not someone else's job, it's my job to make sure we understand the difficulty of the challenge truly. What's the percent chances of being the national champions, what's the percent chances of being the Big Ten Champion, what are we going to have to do to do that? And I'm not sure I've done as good a job as I need to do helping us understand that those aren't just, oh, shoot, we'll be the champions. There's been a lot of people come through here that have never been the champions, and it's a difficult thing and you've got to understand the difficulty of the challenge."
