Penn State National Invitational - Day 1

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/Vi...0&SPID=10412&ATCLID=205085767&DB_OEM_ID=17300

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Max Mays and Matt DeChant's 1-2 finish in the weight throw highlighted the opening day of competition for the 21st-ranked Ohio State men's track and field team at the Penn State National Invitational Friday evening.

The Buckeye juniors set PRs in the weight on their way to a sweep of the Top 2 spots. Mays was the champion with a toss of 20.88m (68-6), the third-best distance in the nation so far this season and the fifth-best mark in school history, while DeChant was the runner-up at 19.97m (65-6.25), a Top 15 performance nationally. Third-place went to Buffalo's Matthew Gac (19.81m/65 ft.).

"I thought we had some great highlights from day one after a long trip," head coach Robert Gary said after the meet. "Mike Hartfield continues to be a steady 24-high/25-low jumper and competed really well. In the hurdles, Demoye had a couple sub-8 hurdle races as he continues to get used to the higher hurdle hight. But the best performance of the night goes to Mays and DeChant in the weight throw. Mays had a PR again and continues to improve from walk-on to potential Big Ten champion."

A look at the rest of Friday action for the Buckeyes:

60m Hurdles
Freshman Demoye Bogle set a PR in the 60m hurdles with a fifth-place time of 7.97 seconds. Unattached competitor Jaret Eaton finished first in a meet record time of 7.58.

Long Jump
Junior Michael Hartfield posted a fourth-place distance of 7.54m (24-9), just behind Norfolk State juniors Rashad Cannon (second, 7.56m/24-9.75) and Darris Shelton (third, 7.55m/24-9.25). Tennessee's Justin Hunter took home the title with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 7.96m (26-1.50), the fifth-best Division I jump this season.

Distance Medley Relay
Ohio State finished seventh in the DMR in a time of 10:00.77, more than three seconds off of last week's winning time at the All-Ohio championships. Bucknell crossed the finish line in first-place in 9:55.24.

Very nice first day for the Bucks. Mays and DeChant are the obvious highlights, both setting PRs in the weight throw. Mays also had another huge throw at 20.50m and DeChant had another throw above his prior seasonal best as well.

Hartfield fell off a bit, but is still jumping well. Steve MacDonald went 23'2" as well - a decent performance for him.

The DMR was a C team, so not a bad effort.

Penn State National Invitational - Day 2

Results are here: http://www.gopsusports.com/livestats/c-track/bluewhite10/

A lot of positives today for the Buckeyes. The two biggest by far were the HUGH efforts from Cory Leslie in the Mile and Matt DeChant in the Shot Put. Leslie ran 3:57.97 to win the Mile over former OSU AA Jeff See and PSU's AA Ryan Foster. Cory's time automatically qualifies him for Nationals and is a new OSU school record. Not to be outdone by Leslie, DeChant came out and set a new PR in the Shot Put (a day after setting a new PR in the Weight Throw) with a throw of 19.82 meters (65'0.75"). All three of Matt's throws where he didn't foul were better than his PR coming into this season. Right now, Matt is looking like he has a great chance to finish 2nd at Nationals in the shot. Great efforts from both!

There were several other strong performances as well. Tyler Branch set a season's best in the Shot Put with a throw of 17.87m (58'7.5"). Derek Blevins posted a strong jump in the Triple Jump with an effort of 14.96m (49'1"). Chris Fallon finished 4th in the Mile in a time of 4:05, a new Mile PR I believe.

Thomas Murdaugh was a disappointing 4th in the 400, posting a time of 47.22. Hopefully he bounces back next week. The Brooks brothers both ran 1:04 in the 500. Ok, but nothing to write home about. Aaron Roberts struggled to a 49.39 in the 400. Jared Hall and Jake Hilter couldn't get it going in the 800, both running 1:53s, though they did finish 2nd and 3rd in their section. Will Knickles and Curt Grove ran ok the 1000, finishing in 2:28 and 2:30 respectively. Williams and Roys both ran the 3000 in 8:26, decent improvements from what they have been doing. The 4x4 team of Brooks, Brooks, Bogle and Murdaugh took 3rd in 3:10.84. Ok, especially without Smith.

More signing info: The Bucks have inked Louisville's Curtis Hanle. Curtis boasts a 5k PR of 15:12 and finished 4th in this year's D1 state meet, after finishing 9th as a junior. Gary is putting together his most impressive distance class since the monster group he signed in 2001.

Comments from some recruits on why they chose Ohio State:

Blake Taneff:

"I chose to continue my education and athletic career at the Ohio State University because I know so many people who have gone there and loved their experience. I feel at home on campus, I like the classes and I believe the education OSU provides is top notch for the midwest. Because I grew up in Columbus I've seen the glamour and excitement that comes with OSU athletics and I've wanted to be part of that since my freshman year."

Michael Brajdic:

"I chose to attend Ohio State for a variety of reasons. My parents and I were impressed with Coach Gary, especially that he has a general plan made already for my first few years. He made me feel like I could be a big contributor not only in the Big 10, but nationally. He does a great deal of planning not only towards collegiate success, but a post-collegiate running career. The guys on the team were really easy to get along with, and I loved the fact that I'd be able to train with all the guys I had looked up to since freshman year. The pride that comes with not only representing Ohio State, but all of Ohio was a big pull for me. I liked the trend of keeping Ohio guys in Ohio as well.

Academically, I couldn't go wrong either. Ohio State's plethora of majors, and nationally ranked majors made it the complete choice. Lastly, when I heard Dan White was coming back I couldn't really pass an opportunity like that up."

GaREAT Collegiate Invitational

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/Vi...0&SPID=10412&ATCLID=205090718&DB_OEM_ID=17300

GENEVA, Ohio - The 16th-ranked Ohio State men's track and field team competed at the GaREAT Collegiate Invitational Saturday afternoon at the GaREAT Sport Complex.

Despite resting several team members, Ohio State nevertheless witnessed a number of impressive performances from its competing student-athletes. Highlights included a 1-2-3-4 finish by the Buckeye weight throwers and first-place efforts from freshman Barron Witherspoon in the 60m hurdles and junior Steve MacDonald in the long jump.

Here's an event-by-event breakdown of the Scarlet and Gray's trip north:

60m Hurdles
Witherspoon used a time of 8.08 to finish in first-place for the Buckeyes. Wisconsin's Adum Gross was the runner-up in 8.19.

200m Dash
Fifth-place went to Blake Callahan in a season-best time of 21.58, while All-American Thomas Murdaugh took seventh in 21.78. Kind Butler of Indiana sprinted his way to first-place in a time of 20.93, ninth-best in Division I this season.

400m Dash
Korbin Smith's personal best time of 47.82 helped the Buckeye sophomore finish fifth overall. North Carolina finished 1-2, with Charles Cox claiming first-place in a time of 46.51, a Top 5 time nationally.

800m Run
Wisconsin went 1-2, led by first-place runner Zach Mellon (1:50.75). Jared Hall was the top Buckeye finisher, taking fifth in a season-best time of 1:52.19. Chris Fallon (seventh, 1:52.43) and Jake Hiltner (ninth, 1:52.70) also posted season-bests for OSU, with Fallon's time also serving as a personal best.

3000m Run
Adam Green ran a season-best time of 8:11.57, finishing 15th in a deep and competitive field - the Top 6 finishers all posted times under eight minutes. Wisconsin's Maverick Darling led the pack in a time of 7:52.31, a Top 5 Division I performance.

Triple Jump
A PR jump of 14.71m (48-3.25) helped Julian Vann to second-place behind Rex Parker of Indiana (14.90m/48-10.75).

Long Jump
MacDonald won the event with a 6.97m (22-10.50) leap. Indiana's Parker finished second at 6.96m (22-10).

Pole Vault
Freshman Cody Marshall finished second, clearing the bar at 4.91m (16-1.25). North Carolina's Parker Smith was first at 5.06m (16-7.25).

Weight Throw
The Buckeyes swept the Top 4, with Max Mays taking the title at 19.80m (64-11.50). All-American Matt DeChant was the runner-up with a 19.37m (63-6.75) toss, followed by Tyler Branch (season-best mark of 18.88m/61-11.50) and Billy Gehring (18.38m/60-3.75).

Shot Put
Ohio State claimed two of the Top 5 spots, with DeChant's third-place toss of 18.67m (61-3) leading the way. Curt Smith finished fifth at 15.92m (52-2.75), well behind first-place Eric Werskey of Auburn (19.41m/63-8.25).

This meet felt like step backward, but at the time PRs can't be expected every time out. Many of OSU's top guys also took the week off (Hartfield, Leslie, Bogle, Blevins, Nickles).

While the throwers didn't throw badly, even being off their game slightly (as they were here) at B1G's could mean a massive loss of points, as the B1G is incredibly strong in the throws this year (9 of the top 20 in the country in both the shot and the weight).

Good run for Callahan in the 200, but Murdaugh's performance was disappointing. On the plus side, he didn't run well in the 200 during the season last year either before placing 2nd at B1G's.

Solid debut in the 400 for Korbin, but he was behind some Wisconsin guys and will have to get into the low 47s to be a serious player at B1G's.

The 800 guys continue to stagnate, sitting in the 1:52/53 range (though, the race was slow overall, as All-American Zach Mellon won in 1:50.61). This is a really talented group, but they haven't performed up to the level they are capable of yet.

Green's 3000 was also disappointing, as I was hoping he would be closer to 8:00. After starting the season out strong he has been struggling a bit of late.

This weekend the Bucks split the squad between New Mexico and Akron. Murdaugh, Smith, Bogle, Witherspoon, Blevins, Hartfield, and Hall head out to UNM to compete (and presumably enjoy the altitude) in the 400 (Murdaugh and Smith), 60 Hurdles (Bogle and Witherspoon), Long and Triple Jumps (Hartfield and Blevins), 800 (Hall), and 4x4 (Murdaugh, Smith, Bogle, and Hall). The rest of the team, minus the top thowers (who it appears will take the week off) head up to Akron. Races to watch there are the 5k, where it looks like Green, Williams, Roys and Edwards (he's on the start list, hope he runs!) will be paced by Olinger, and the 3k where it appears Leslie will be paced by See and Huling. Cory looks really fit and a sub 8:00 clocking looks like a possibility.

University of New Mexico Don Kirby Invitational

Results: http://www.golobos.com/sports/c-track/stats/2010-2011/results.html

Overall a very solid performance from the small OSU contingent that attended.

400: Murdaugh got back to form picking up the win in a season's best time of 46.52. Korbin Smith didn't fare as well, running a 48.42.

800: Jared Hall took 3rd in 1:50.98, which converts to a 1:50.36 due to the altitude. Season's best for Jared and probably his best individual race a Buckeye to date. Would have been a provo mark under last year's system.

60 Hurdles: This was step backward for Bogle and Witherspoon. Bogle went 8.18 in the prelims and 8.10 in the finals, while Witherspoon went 8.10 in the prelims and then 8.29 in the finals. Demoye needs to get back under 8.00 and Barron needs to get back into the 8.0Xs.

4x400: The OSU team of Murdaugh, Smith, Bogle, and Hall picked up the win in a season's best time of 3:10.13.

Long and Triple Jumps: Huge meet for Hartfield, as he picked up PRs in both events. 25'06.75" (7.79m) in the LJ and 51'10" (15.80m) in the TJ. I believe that Hartfield posted three jumps all better than his previous PR. Blevins was solid, but not spectacular, going 23'5.25" (7.14m) in the LJ and 48'07.5" (14.82m) in the TJ.

Hopefully, the rest of the team performs similarly well today at Akron.

Men finished fifth at Big Ten Indoors Championship

I think that our BP track guys who are in the know might be a little disappointed with a fifth-place finish in the Big Ten's. I am pretty sure that they expected a higher finish.

Junior All-American Thomas Murdaugh won the sixth Big Ten title of his career Sunday at the 2011 Big Ten Indoor Championships, leading the 22nd-ranked Ohio State men?s track and field team to a fifth-place finish in Champaign, Ill.

Murdaugh was dominant in winning the second conference 400m title of his career, crossing the finish line in 46.81 to bring home the win and 10 points toward the Buckeyes? team score. Brady Gehret of Penn State was the runner-up in 47.19.

Despite holding a four-point lead heading into the final day of competition, the Buckeyes were unable to manufacture enough points to keep pace with the title contenders Sunday. No. 20 Minnesota won its fourth-consecutive conference championship, ending the day with 117.333 points. Second-place went to No. 3 Indiana (104.5 points), followed in order by No. 16 Wisconsin (96), No. 15 Iowa (88) and the Buckeyes.

?Obviously, the team and staff are disappointed,? Ohio State head coach Robert Gary said after the meet. ?We have been in the Top 3 the last couple years, and I believed we could get to 100 points for sure. It just didn?t happen today.?

Michael Hartfield wrapped up an impressive debut on the conference stage, earning eight points and runner-up honors in the triple jump at 15.70m behind Iowa?s Troy Doris (16.00m) ? Hartfield captured the first Big Ten title of his career Saturday with a win in the long jump.

?We got great meets from both Murdaugh and Hartfield, as well as from guys like Cory Leslie, Korbin Smith and Max Mays, people we expected to step up? Gary said. ?Unfortunately, there were no real surprises after that.?

The real surprise of the meet came in the 4x400m, where Iowa snapped the Buckeyes? two year reign atop the conference, edging the Scarlet and Gray at the finish line for first-place in a time of 3:12.53. OSU?s second-place time of 3:12.53 earned the team eight points and was more than enough to hold off third-place Wisconsin (3:14.78).

Coming off a somewhat sub-par showing at the B1G Championships two weeks ago, the Buckeyes looked to turn things around the this weekend's National Championships. Unfortunately, the meet was a complete disaster for tOSU.

Max Mays, the 12th ranked Weight Thrower in the country, had the best weekend of any of the five Buckeyes, finishing 12th in the WT in 20.08m. Matching his season's best would have placed him 6th. Max had been somewhat up and down this year, and this performance fell somewhat in the middle of those extremes. Not good, but not bad, either.

Matt DeChant, ranked 4th in the country, took 10th in the Shot Put in 18.68m, a throw that was only 0.01m better than his season's worst (outside of his B1G performance). Tying is PR would have put him 2nd, and a typical throw for what he had done this year easily would have placed him in the scoring. Very bad end of the season for Matt.

Cory Leslie finished 15th in the Mile, coming in last in his preliminary heat, just under two seconds behind the final qualifier from his heat. All eight runners in the heat stayed together for the first 7 laps, but on lap 8 when everyone moved Cory was unable to respond. Not a disaster performance, but not what he was looking for either.

Thomas Murdaugh also struggled, finishing 15th in the 400 in 47.04. Murdaugh came through the first lap of his prelim heat in second, but struggled over the final lap, ultimately running slower than he did two weeks ago on a flat 200 meter track. Penn State's Brady Gehret, who Murdaugh spanked at B1G's, finished 3rd.

Not to be outdone, Mike Hartfield also posted his worst performance of the season, jumping 7.42m in the Long Jump to finish 14th. Matching his season's best would have placed him 6th.

The Big Ten as a whole, however, had an excellent meet. Four teams finished in the top 11 (Indiana and Minny tied for 6th, Iowa t8th, and PSU t11th).

IU's Derek Drouin won the national title in the high jump while Illinois' Andrew Riley took first in the 60 hurdles. IU's DMR took 2nd behind a crazy 3:53 anchor leg from Andy Bayer and Minnesota's Ben Blankenship took 2nd in the 3k. Lot's of other great performances as well.

Results are here:http://www.flashresults.com/2011_Meets/indoor/03-11-NCAADiv1/Day1.htm

The good news is that the meet is over and that all of these national qualifiers return next season. The bad news, is, obviously, that every one of the team's top guys did horribly. I don't know if perhaps they were sick? It's clearly not a case of one coach not peaking his people right, since we are dealing with a jumper, a sprinter, a distance guy, and two throwers.

In any event, onto Outdoors, where the Buckeyes will welcome the services of Chad Balyo, who was out of indoor eligibility. It would not surprise me to see Green and/or Leslie redshirt this season, however. I'm excited to see how Bogle does on the longer hurdles, and I hope that Matt Terrell can get to form, he is someone who can be a real asset to this team.

The Bucks return to action the weekend of March 25. Looks like the distance guys will head to the Stanford Invite while the rest of the team heads to Mississippi State for the SEC/Big Ten challenge.

Buckeyes Earn Fourth Consecutive Win Over Michigan in ?The Dual? with 109-94 Triumph

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Ohio State men's track and field team used wins in 11 of 19 events to defeat archrival Michigan, 109-94, Sunday afternoon in "The Dual" at historic Ferry Field.

The Buckeyes battled temperatures in the low 40s and winds reaching 30 mph to capture their fourth-consecutive victory over the Wolverines. With the win, Ohio State now owns a 6-2 advantage over its rival since the inception of the dual meet in 2008.

"I was very pleased with the team's performance today in cold and windy conditions," Ohio State head coach Robert Gary said after the meet. "We had some good marks, but this meet is really about competing man vs. man. In that regard, I thought we did a fantastic job, even after we had the team win secured in the scoring."

Chasing greatness: Ohio State's Mike Hartfield is rising star in long jump, emulating legend Jesse Owens

Friday, April 22, 2011 03:05 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Growing up in Connecticut, Mike Hartfield didn't know much about track or Ohio State. But he knew about Jesse Owens. Everybody knows who Jesse Owens was. So Hartfield is reveling in the fact that he will compete this weekend in the Jesse Owens Track Classic for Ohio State in the same events Owens once dominated.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of Owens' stunning four-gold-medal performance at the Berlin Olympics. As part of that recognition, a statue of Owens was formally unveiled at his namesake track stadium yesterday, followed by a banquet featuring Bill Cosby.

For Hartfield, an OSU junior, the image of Owens is never too far away. A banner of Owens hangs right beside the long jump pit at the French Field House practice facility. When Hartfield had a long jump of 25 feet, 91/4 inches to win the Big Ten indoor title this year, it edged Owens' best indoor collegiate jump of 25-9 and is third all time at OSU.

"When I found out I beat his personal indoor record, I was ecstatic," Hartfield said. "To beat Jesse Owens, an icon like that, it was definitely big. That's definitely the coolest thing I've ever done - better than being All-American and winning the Big Ten (title)."

Sprint recruit

Right out of good old Central Ohio:)
Hartley High School senior Aisha Cavin committed to compete in track and field for Ohio State earlier this month, ThisWeekSPORTS.com has learned.

The defending Division II state champion in the 400 meters who also was fourth last year at state in the 200, Cavin chose Ohio State over Oregon.
"(Ohio State's) coach has been watching me for years, and the distance was a lot better," Cavin said of committing to a school close to home.
"My parents are Michigan fans, so I grew up in a house that didn't root for Ohio State. I've been over to the campus a lot and I really do like the campus."
