2010 tOSU Offensive Line Discussion

First and goal at the 2, down 21-0, and we go shotgun 3 plays, gain no yards, and kick a FG. This is what I was talking about.

That's not Ohio State football. We need to be able to line up and pound it in the end zone. Don't know if we can do it because we didn't even try. :ohwell:

I thought this was more reflective of poor play calling than O-line play. We basically ran the same play 3 times in a row with different window dressing.

Jake is right on.
The next time down there, we go with both Homan at H back and Boren at full back, and ran it down their throats.
I think JT has found his short redzone offense.

Ohio State linemen J.B. Shugarts and Mike Adams impress, but seldom at the same time
Published: Tuesday, October 26, 2010
Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Mike Adams and J.B. Shugarts were linked early in their careers, arriving at Ohio State as highly recruited bookend tackles who both saw their freshmen seasons ended in October of 2008 by shoulder injuries. Since then, it hasn't been easy for the friends to stay healthy, on the field and at their best at the same time.

Right now, it's Shugarts and his aggravating foot right foot injury that are keeping the juniors from sharing as much success as they expected.

Saturday at Minnesota, the Buckeyes don't need All-American efforts against the 1-7 Golden Gophers, who have managed just three sacks in eight games this season. But Adams and Shugarts may be the most important players to the overall BCS bowl hopes of the 7-1 Buckeyes, with Ohio State's toughest remaining game coming Nov. 20 at Iowa, with the Hawkeyes featuring the best defensive line in the Big Ten.

It's all on the line
Buckeyes' improving offensive line is getting ready to go head-to-head with the best defensive front in the Big Ten

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Even as he gave credit to his offensive line, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel was quick to point out the challenge that awaits Saturday at Iowa.

"Really that group of guys has been together since about Iowa last year and that's so important, games together, practices together, communications together," Tressel said yesterday. "So I think the offensive line has come along.

"But they haven't faced this outfit."

Led by defensive end Adrian Clayborn, the Iowa front four -including tackles Karl Klug and Mike Daniels, and Christian Ballard at the other end - is regarded as the best defensive line in the Big Ten. Granted, it did give up two long touchdown drives in the fourth quarter last week at Northwestern that cost Iowa the game, but its reputation still is one of dominating the trench.

"They're great up front," Ohio State center Michael Brewster said. "They're great with their technique, and they know exactly what they want to do every play. We know we're going to have to bring our 'A' game, because they do every week. That's the strength of their defense."

As a fan, I'd like to thank Mike Brewster for knocking Adrian Clayborn well behind the line of scrimmage on the 4th and 10 play late in the game, clearing a path for TP to head left. And thanks to Justin Boren for getting up off the ground, spotting which way TP was heading, and picking the correct guy of the two in front of him to block in order for TP to get the first down.

And Mike Adams did well facing off against Clayborn most of the day.

It wasn't a dominant performance like the last couple of weeks, but it was a good effort overall on the road, in a tough environment at Iowa's senior day, against a very solid D-line.

Thanks for the effort guys, congrats on another 10-win season, and now focus on blugdeoning the Vulvarines on Saturday!

Ditto to all of this. I have to say that Adams has really made a believer out of me. I know he's not perfect yet, but man has he really come on strong. IMO, he's far from the weak link on this line now.

Thus far, the O-line has had two Novembers in a row that have been fantastic. Great to see.

Post-Season Awards Tout Ohio State?s Offensive Line
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? From preseason question-mark to unquestioned Big Ten first-teamer, that was the story of Ohio State left tackle Mike Adams in 2010.

The 6-foot-8 junior was voted first-team all-conference by both the media and coaches Monday.

?He has continually improved this season. He needs to keep doing that, but he really has,? Ohio State offensive coordinator and line coach Jim Bollman said.

?He has unusual athletic ability for his size and position. He really has gotten better as the season has gone on. He had a great game last week.?

Adams was joined on the first-team by nine other Buckeyes, including fellow offensive linemen Justin Boren and Michael Brewster. Wideout Dane Sanzenbacher was Ohio State?s only other offensive player to be a consensus first-teamer, as both Boren and Brewster were selected only by the media.

Their selections, however, were validation for the job well-done by Bollman and his staff this season. Although they returned four starters up front, there were series question marks about the development of Ohio State offensive linemen.

It will be interesting next year if Big Mike Adams bolts to the league. I am not so sure we have been recruiting enough talent at the tackle spot, couple that with the questions surrounding Marcus Hall redshirting this year. I would be interested to hear other opinions. Go Bucks

I agree that it would get quite interesting. Big Mike has played quite well this year, but I think he can really improve his stock with another year in the S&G, plus possibly even more important is the NFL's collective bargaining agreement/lockout issues. Another bonus with a questionable OL is having mobile QBs, now if TP and Big Mike go :paranoid:

Adams improved a ton for sure this year but any discussion of him leaving early is totally ridiculous in my IMO. Looking forward to him making an even bigger jump next year!
Not at all ridiculous. I'm not Mel Kiper, but i know big Mike has a 1st day draft grade. But just like another poster said, the lockout could scare alot of juniors to stay in school.

I sure do hope big Mike comes back. The options could be Norwell, Shugarts(foot problems), Hall(academics???), Baldwin(listed as a DL), Farris(true freshman), Tommy Brown(true freshman)....possible TE move but I cant see Fragel adding 40lbs or Heuerman adding 50lbs by next year.

Mewhort and Longo are both listed as guards. Not sure if either one is a potential LT. Shugarts could slide to LT and Norwell could stay at RT. Seems that Marcus Hall was being groomed as the next tackle.

I cant see any of our current recruits or potential recruits being ready to start as a true freshman. This is the one position that could be a huge huge problem if Adams leaves and he is the one with the good upside that would be a first day pick. Go Bucks
