2010 tOSU Special Teams Discussion

Yeah, it was Kudla. If I recall correctly, he was wearing a different number than what he wore the next three years.

After that hit, he had some kind of complications and almost died, lost a lot of weight and muscle.

Still don't know why Kudla didn't catch on somewhere in the NFL. Go back and watch the OSU-ND Fiesta Bowl ---- he was a monster.

I guess I should go look in Alumni and see what he is doing now.

Undrafted in 2006, Kudla didn?t have to wait long to get picked up by a team, as Pitts*burgh grabbed him as a free agent immediately following the selection process.
The injury bug that plagued him his entire Ohio State career bit again, however, as he tweaked an already sketchy right hamstring on the first day of practice.
He was forced to sit out and eventually was cut.
?My hamstring was pieced together,? he said. ?I knew it was a matter of time before it would go again. I was never able to get it quite healed.?
Kudla didn?t give in, trying out with Green Bay in January 2007 and again in November with Miami.
Teams still had reservations about the hamstring as the pain continued to bother him, so Kudla took time off and got himself healed. He put himself in the best shape of his life, changed his agent and concen*trated on getting back to foot*ball.
He was all set to go to the Arena Football League, play in a few games and give NFL teams some film, but the league went bankrupt in December 2008 and Kudla?s life changed.

I used to work out at the same gym as him. I saw him just a few months ago and he was still in amazing shape. The workouts the guy does are just unreal.

Ohio State football: Special emphasis on these teams (with video)

COLUMBUS ? If ever there was a case study for the coaching philosophy of Jim Tressel, it was this past Saturday.

Tressel has long been an advocate of sound special teams play, which is somewhat ironic this season in light of Ohio State's struggles on special teams ? particularly on punt and kickoff returns.

Tressel hasn't deviated from those thoughts, but rather might be more adamant than ever about the importance of special teams after they played a pivotal role in the outcomes of a handful of key matchups across the nation last weekend.

In his luncheon meeting with the media on Tuesday, Tressel pointed to Wisconsin's fake punt as the turning point in the Badgers' 31-30 win over Iowa. In that game, the Hawkeyes missed an extra point, which made a huge difference in the one-point loss.

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet but the ST play yesterday graded an A. Specifically, the coverage teams. Hopefully they continue to improve and live up to their billing. We've got some real athletes on that KO coverage team I've noticed.

I vote for closing the 2010 Special Teams thread and moving ahead to 2011. A tough, tough year for the special teams (though I do like seeing Berry and Hall on returns). I guarantee that there will be a ton of work in this area during the spring.

I'm not making excuses for the blocked punt in any way but after rewatching the game - I know sick right? - It looked like Ben lined up 13 - 13.5 yards deep... 15 - 14.5 yards is what I thought to be the standard depth. Coupled with a slow two-step punt and a great effort by Arkansas to jump over the up-men and the damn thing gets blocked.

Too damn slow to get a punt off in a situation like that. BB needs to have better awareness and yes I'm sure special teams will get their work in this spring/summer but weren't we saying something similar after the Rose Bowl?

On to the 2011 thread...
