Split with Fredo of Ohio. Buckeyes lost in Columbus on Friday night and then took the rematch from the Fredoites in Oxford on Saturday.

Winning streak snapped at 9 (11 unbeaten).

Still all alone in first place in the CCHA by 5 points.

Stayed at 4th in the poll but lost all but one of our first place votes.

Gutsy show by the Buckeyes to have the winning streak snapped at home but sack up and go down the next night and beat Fredo in their little shoebox arena.

After a come-from-behind, overtime road win against rival Miami on Dec. 10 put a cap on the first half of Ohio State?s men?s hockey season, co-captain Cory Schneider addressed his teammates in the locker room.

His message was simple: Don?t forget what got us here.

?They have to go home with the mind-set of letting their bodies heal up and mentally recharge but come back with the mentality of hard work and don?t let that slip,? coach Mark Osiecki said. ?It?s hard because we have a two-week break and guys aren?t going to work out as hard as they would if the coaches were around.?

After sprinting to the top of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings with a 10-3-1-1 conference record, the Buckeyes now are in the midst of a 20-day break from game action. They will not take the ice again until Dec. 30 when they face Robert Morris at Consol Energy Center, home of the NHL?s Pittsburgh Penguins.

The players will have about two weeks away from each other before reassembling one week prior to the game.

?Yeah, we?re in a great position right now but what will show the type of team we are is the second half,? senior Sean Duddy said. ?I think everyone on the team knows that. The expectation is that guys are going to be taking care of their bodies and using this break as a good thing.?
Those results include an 11-game unbeaten streak that came to an end Dec. 9 at home against the Redhawks, propelling the team five points ahead of second-place Notre Dame. Ohio State sits fourth in the national rankings thanks to its work ethic, according to its coach.

?We have skill but we don?t have over-the-top skill at all,? Osiecki said. ?The only way we have any success is by having our work habits and our compete level so high. It?s been fun for the guys to see some results because of it.?

Now the Buckeyes face a second-half schedule that includes eight straight games against teams currently in the top six of the CCHA standings.

?It?s definitely a great feeling to see that we?re up, but the first half is over and they don?t give out trophies for first place going into Christmas break,? Duddy said. ?Anytime you can go into a break with the kind of record that we have, you?re definitely happy. We?ve played up to our expectations so far.?

A lot of people grumbled about O's housecleaning last year, but the effects are pretty evident. The amazing thing for me is to see the improvement and development in those players who stuck around from last year to this year. That was something so utterly lacking under Markell. Makes me sick to think how Steckell and Umberger might have progressed and improved from year to year under O.

Twenty day layoff has me worried for such a young team though. Wish we could have lined up a Holiday tourney to bridge the gap.

Ugly, but still a win.

We really need to break out the plungers next weekend and sweep Bowling Green. Schedule is brutal from that point onward with four top six CCHA teams plus Michigan and Fredo who, despite struggling, will still be tough outs.

So, not only did GS allow the biggest hockey weekend of the year at Ohio State to be partially moved to Cleveland. He has now allowed CBS to move the time of the IU bball rematch to compete directly with it.

How he stumbled and backdoored his way into hiring Oz, I'll never know.

College hockey in Ohio has for a decade tilted toward Oxford as Miami coach Enrico Blasi built a national powerhouse, added a huge home-ice advantage in the form of a cozy new arena and made NCAA Tournament appearances an annual rite.

This season, there has occurred a notable shift. Here in Columbus, where Value City Arena is too big, the practice facility dates to the Kennedy administration and college hockey is an afterthought, Ohio State is on pace to win the (mythical) state championship ? not to mention the Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season title.

At present, the Buckeyes are ranked second in the nation.

?We?re just riding the wave with men?s basketball and women?s basketball,? coach Mark Osiecki said. ?Really, it?s fun to be around. The coaches (Thad Matta and Jim Foster, among others) have done a great job intertwining. There?s a real good vibe going.?

Ohio State (14-4-1) is riding a 12-1-1 streak into a weekend series at Bowling Green. And so an eventful month continues. Next weekend, the Buckeyes play Michigan twice: The first game, on Friday, is in Value City Arena; the second, on Sunday, Jan. 15, is the Frozen Diamond Faceoff at Progressive Field in Cleveland.​

Osiecki has a sense of the magic that emanates from Outdoor Games with Long Names. He was an assistant coach at Wisconsin when the Badgers played the Buckeyes at Lambeau Field in 2006, and when the Badgers played Michigan at Camp Randall Stadium in 2010. He also has picked the mind of his friend and fellow Wisconsin alum Tony Granato, the Pittsburgh Penguins assistant who had a bench seat for the 2011 NHL Winter Classic at Heinz Field.​

?Tony said one of the most memorable experiences the Penguins had was the family skate the day before the game, and we?re going to do the same kind of thing,? Osiecki said. ?We?ve sent invitations out to players? parents and siblings and all the families on our staff. We?re all really looking forward to the whole weekend. It?s going to be awesome. I can?t think of another word, just awesome.?

Awesome, as in goalie Cal Heeter?s winning percentage (.833), goals-against average (2.11) and save percentage (.927). And you thought that Columbus was devoid of goaltending, and defense, victories and awesome.

Osiecki is in his second year after taking over for John Markell, who built a formidable program that ultimately lost its momentum. Osiecki last fall brought in a class of 12 freshmen and one junior transfer and mixed it with his first class of recruits and the remaining veterans, including Heeter, a senior. They have made a precipitous turn north from mediocrity.

Must have been reading their press clippings. Hoping for a better performance today.

Al McLean and Max McCormick each scored a goal for Ohio State in the final 3:48 of regulation, and the men?s hockey team played to a 2-2 tie but lost in a shootout to Bowling Green in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game last night at BGSU Ice Arena.

The Buckeyes (14-4-2, 10-3-2-1) earned a point in the league standings for the overtime tie, while the Falcons 6-13-4; 1-11-3-2) picked up two points with the shootout win.

Trailing 2-0, McLean put OSU on the board with a one-timer from McCormick. Ohio State went on the power play and capitalized just 1:23 later when Darik Angeli fed McCormick in front of the net.

Sean Duddy assisted on both goals.

The teams will meet again today at 5:05 p.m

Another shootout loss to BG

Cal Heeter of the second-ranked Ohio State men?s hockey team was headed for his third shutout of the season yesterday in a game at Bowling Green.​

But the Falcons capitalized on a Buckeyes penalty with less than two minutes left in regulation and scored the tying goal with 56 seconds remaining. The score remained 1-1 after overtime, and the Falcons won the shootout 2-1.

The tie follows a 2-2 tie Saturday against Bowling Green, which also won the shootout. It marked the first time OSU tied both games of a series since March 2003 against Michigan. Still, the Buckeyes (14-4-3, 10-3-3-1) maintained a healthy lead in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association by seven points over Notre Dame and Western Michigan.​

Chris Crane gave OSU a 1-0 lead at 11:31 of the second period. But Camden Wojtala tied the score for Bowling Green (6-13-5, 1-11-4-3), which had pulled its goalie and was on a power play after Corey Schneider was called for interference with 1:18 left.

Ohio State opens a two-game series against Michigan at 7:35 p.m. on Friday in Value City Arena. The second game is at 5:05 p.m. Sunday in the Frozen Diamond Faceoff at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
