2011 NFL Draft (Mocks, Eval, etc)

this wont make not taking Peterson with the first pick any easier for the browns

LSU CB Patrick Peterson ran a 4.32 forty time, unofficially, on his first attempt at the Scouting Combine Tuesday.
He also posted an explosive 10-foot-, 6-inch broad jump earlier in the day. Peterson weighed in at 6-foot and 219 pounds this week, so a low-4.3 forty time is absurd. He's locked in as a top-seven overall pick in the draft.

I'll trade Jamarcus Russel and my 1st rounder this year for the #1 spot.

I just love how all the NFL mock draft experts and reporters keep circulating the same tired scouting reports on players.

Key terms to any good scouting report:

Grade his "natural athleticism"
Talk about "explosiveness" in terms of 40-yard dash speed
Discuss his slow or quick footwork
Discuss how well he "turns his shoulders"
Mention his "motor" or "blue-collar work-ethic".
Go on and on about his tight or loose hips and how he "comes out of his stance".

And lately I am hearing a word based on WRs and Defensive backs called "leggy" i.e. he is not leggy. What the hell does that mean?

I'm not saying that these terms aren't important in judging player quality. But I just don't think that guys on these websites are able to judge all that well. In particular, I think a website just posts shit that they view on another website and enough scouts link to one anothers report and the assessment of these NFL prospects becomes gospel. I trust more in game-tape breakdown and NFL coaches' opinions than in NFL Combine measurable stats as judged by some journalism major.

"Leggy" is poor footwork. When your legs are wasting motion and negatively effecting cuts, turns, back-peddle & turn/pursuit.

The Scouting Combine generates more interest every offseason. It was an especially publicized event this year because the NFL draft and its related events are the only sure things with no new Collective Bargaining Agreement on the horizon.

We previewed the six-day affair last week, and successfully pinpointed a number of workout wonders like Nevada DE Dontay Moch, Abilene Christian WR Edmund Gates, and Miami CB Demarcus Van Dyke, the latter of whom ran the fastest forty time in Indianapolis.

Now, let's have a look at risers and fallers from the 2011 Combine.

Combine's Biggest Risers

1. Florida State QB Christian Ponder

After undergoing three throwing-arm surgeries in his final two college seasons, Ponder's biggest pre-draft objectives were clear: stay healthy and pass medicals. He's done both, acing physicals at the Senior Bowl and Combine amidst lengthy stints on the MRI machine, and turning in terrific passing-drill performances. In Indianapolis, the consensus was that Ponder had the most accurate throwing session of any signal caller inside Lucas Oil Stadium. The ideal West Coast quarterback, Ponder emerges from the six-day affair gaining steam as a potential first-round pick.

Ponder's Combine measurables: 6'2/229, 10 1/4" hands, 4.65 forty, 34" vertical

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers will "almost certainly" use the No. 18 overall pick on a defensive end or outside linebacker.

The Chargers are dangerously thin at defensive end with two of their top three players at the position (Travis Johnson, Jacques Cesaire) headed to free agency. They'll likely draft an outside linebacker at some point in the first three rounds, but doing so 18th overall would all but be an admission that Larry English was a bust. Look for Cam Jordan, J.J. Watt, and Muhammad Wilkerson to be squarely on GM A.J. Smith's first-round radar.

Alabama WR Julio Jones will have a screw inserted into his fractured foot Saturday by noted foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson.

The surgery will take place in Charlotte. With eight weeks of recovery, Jones will target April 30 to be 100 percent. In other words, we won't see him work out again before the first round (April 28). There could be a rush by NFL teams to put Jones through medical checks just before the draft, but we don't think Jones will fall out of the top-12 picks this April.

One NFL personnel evaluator stated at the Combine that he believes Auburn DT Nick Fairley is really only a "top 15-20" pro prospect.

The evaluator still predicted Fairley would go in the top ten, but doesn't believe he's necessarily deserving due to concerns with the SEC Defensive Player of the Year's "body, speed, and technique." It's true that Fairley was clearly outdone by Marcell Dareus in the 10-yard split, and measuring in at 6-foot-3, 291 pounds isn't going to help Fairley in the eyes of 3-4 teams.
