avg. 306 this looks like a very athletic line. Maybe one of the recent best? And Adams is slimmed down, also. (320)

I've said it before - for the zone blocking scheme we run, bigger is NOT always better. Looking forward very much to a slimmed down line.

Now granted it wasn't against the greatest defense, but the guys up front, at least the starters, looked pretty solid today. I don't remember too many negative plays (I had to miss the last 6 minutes). The Bucks were able to establish the run from the I, and that is always a good thing. Just keep getting better.

And, as always, that fullback who hits like a guard did a damn good job.

Very pleased with the overall performance of the line today. The run-blocking was superb and gave the young backs some great opportunities. As for the pass-blocking, they gave the QBs a nice pocket most of the time and didn't allow any sacks. They did give up a few pressures, but that is to be expected in the first game of the season. I have no doubt they will improve, and once Mike comes back and the line could be one of the best in the nation. Corey also will provide some much need depth as well when he returns from his suspension.

On a side not, I was impressed with the second team o-line, especially Bobek and Underwood. They looked like they were in the right positions most of the time and I though Underwood handled right tackle fairly well for his first game as a Buckeye.

I agree that Akron wasn't the strongest opponent, but the offensive line did much beter than we have done over the past 5-6 years. We have struggled with MAC opponents in run blocking to the point where folks here complain that we should be able to move these guys. The line did yesterday.

I liked the more aggressive attitude overall.

Ohio State football: There's room for youth on Bollman's line

Ohio State plunged into the 2011 season last week with three freshmen listed as backups on the offensive line. Somewhere, Woody Hayes had to be pacing with worry.

Offensive coordinator Jim Bollman, who coaches the line, might have shared Hayes? angst 10 years ago, until he became used to the notion that freshman linemen weren?t such a bad thing, at least in small doses.

?I?ve been coaching for 35 years, and prior to coming here (in 2001), I never had a freshman play in the offensive line,? Bollman said. ?I mean never. I had some who might be on the varsity field with me in practice, but they never played.

?But now, maybe rationalizing back over the past 10 years, this is one of the places where maybe you can recruit guys who can play as freshmen up there. But there?s almost always some kind of combination with need that happens. For example, this was a year coming in where we knew we were minus some entities for a bit.?

No. 1 left tackle Mike Adams was suspended for the first five games and the line?s probable sixth man, Corey Linsley, was suspended for the first two.

?So we knew we were going to have to have some young guys step it up,? Bollman said. ?And we?ve got a couple of young guys who have been doing that, and a couple of young guys who are still in the process.?

The first two he referred to were freshmen Brian Bobek at center and Tony Underwood at right tackle, backups who both played in the opening win over Akron on Saturday.

While 380-pound freshman Chris Carter was listed as the backup at left guard, he did not see action. Neither did freshman Tommie Brown, though Bollman would not rule out either of them playing this season.

Bollman?s willingness to play first-year linemen, at least in support roles, is nothing new.

?We?ve been in some of these situations before,? he said. ?Look back at our national championship year in 2002.?

Center Nick Mangold and guard Rob Sims saw increasing action as freshman subs that season, including in the title-game win over the University of Miami.

?Sometimes you have to make those kinds of decisions because of the numbers (of players available),? Bollman said. ?This is a similar kind of deal, and I think the young guys this year are doing a good job of stepping up.?

Ohio State notebook: Linemen are ready for bigger challenge

With Braxton Miller taking over as the starting quarterback, the burden to lighten his load will fall on Ohio State?s offensive line.

If the game plan against Colorado calls for a heavy dose of running, the linemen are more than happy to oblige.

?We know we?re going to have to put a lot on our shoulders, and we?re ready for that,? senior center Michael Brewster said on Tuesday, before the quarterback announcement was made.

The line was one of the few bright spots on Saturday in a 24-6 loss to the University of Miami. It provided solid pass protection and continually opened holes for running backs Jordan Hall and Carlos Hyde. They combined for 141 yards on 26 carries, a 5.4-yard average.

?I was proud of my guys up front,? Brewster said. ?I think definitely that game will give us a lot of confidence, and we?ll keep this going.?

The line got a lift against Miami by the return from team suspension of Corey Linsley. He shared time with Marcus Hall at right guard, providing much-needed depth on a line whose backups are primarily freshmen.

Now the line will be blocking primarily for another freshman.

?I think Braxton is doing a pretty good job,? Brewster said. ?It?s not going to be smooth sailing all the time for him, but so far he?s doing the best he can.?

Brewster was a freshman three years ago when Terrelle Pryor took over at quarterback. Coincidentally, that game against Troy also marked Brewster?s starting debut. He will be making his 40th consecutive start on Saturday.

Asked to compare Pryor and Miller, Brewster said, ?They?re just different players. Terrelle is a really, really big guy. Braxton kind of reminds me of Troy (Smith) ? a shiftier runner. But I think he?ll have a great opportunity to be a great player here.?

Added right tackle J.B. Shugarts: ?Braxton is really poised out on the field, and he?s learning at a really fast pace.?

For the last 5 years our O line has not been a strength whoever is in charge next year.. we need competion on our line in practice our depth is such that our starters are pretty much a given which can lead to complacency and a feeling of entitlement.

It seems like our O line is doing a decent job with run blocking but with pass pro they look overwhelmed out there. I realize that defenses throwing everything they have at you (including the kitchen sink) will cause problems. I think this is the biggest obstacle the offense faces. Whether it's TEs or RBs picking up rushers or the quick release passing game gets going, we need something.
