2012-13 Men's Basketball (B1G Tourney Champs, NCAA Elite Eight)

I just saw that we're 1-6 against Top 25 opponents, while none of the other top seven teams in the conference are worse than .500. Doesn't bode too well for the tourney.
True but we've barely lost those games if that counts for anything.

But I guess Wisconsin isn't a top 25 opponent? And we really need to beat Wisconsin and MSU. Then we will have more opportunities in the Big Ten tournament for neutral site victories.

Does Oregon State feel any pressure to hold onto President Obama's brother-in-law?

It's Oregon State (not exactly a powerhouse) but his 2012-13 final record is probably going to be pretty bad and continues a trend.

Keep wondering if the school is reluctant to make a move.

Oregon State hasn't been good in basketball since Gary Payton was there - it's not like they demand a consistent winner. They lost their best player early to the draft after last season - hard to avoid a down year after that. Robinson hasn't been the coach all that long for Oregon State to be letting him go for poor performance given the effect of a fairly unpredictable NBA early entry on his team this year.

Another problem that Oregon State is going to face on a more regular basis is the immediacy of better facilities. Oregon basketball isn't any great thing, but the Matthew Knight center is nice and will bring in recruits. After Oregon State won the two titles in baseball, Oregon started up their program, and within 2-3 years it's on par, because of what Knight and company will put into the school. Oregon State is going to continue to have to go above and beyond in order to compete let alone stay at a similar level. Obama's brother-in-law was the wrong person for the job from the beginning (to me), and it had nothing to do with his political kinsman. I just don't think he's a good enough coach to come to the Pac12 and attempt to do anything of meaning.

Five of those losses were to teams currently ranked 9th or higher. Most of the tourney teams won't be that good. I just want the Bucks to be playing their best, whatever that is, in March.

Ohio State coach Thad Matta did not need to be informed that Northwestern has managed to miss more than 70 percent of its shots in the three games it has played since leaving Value City Arena two weeks ago.

As Matta said after the Wildcats made 11 three-pointers and gave Ohio State more of a run than it might have expected, his team is sometimes ?like a get-well card? for opponents struggling to make shots.

So what do the Buckeyes have in the envelope tonight?

In a volatile Big Ten race in which five teams still have a shot at the championship with three games left, Ohio State players hope to play as well as they did last week in wins over Minnesota and Michigan State, and not as they did the week before against Northwestern and the blowout loss at Wisconsin.

?First of all, give Northwestern credit. They really ran their offense, they made shots, they executed, and for probably 32 minutes, they really controlled that basketball game,? sophomore Sam Thompson said yesterday of Ohio State?s 69-59 win on Feb. 14.

?But I think a lot of that was a lack of defensive intensity and a lack of defensive focus on our part. And it wasn?t just the Northwestern game. If you look in that stretch, I think we lost three of four games in two weeks, and we did not defend the way we are capable of defending (in any) of those four games. That?s what happens when you don?t defend in the Big Ten.?

The Buckeyes seemed to regain that part of their identity last week.

?I think that?s one of the difficulties in coaching, trying to get guys to understand their strengths and weaknesses, even when it?s maybe something that isn?t real glorified in terms of what you look like out there,? Matta said. ?But I think when push comes to shove, and wins and losses are on the line, you?ve got to do what you have to do.?

When Ohio State has done that this season, it has played with almost anyone, anywhere ? in losses at Duke in November and at home against Kansas in December, and in splitting games the past two months with three of the other four Big Ten contenders: Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin.

?You?re in a great league and you?re attempting to bring it every single night,? Matta said, ?but everybody forgets that the other team is bringing it, too. That makes it extremely challenging. Every time you take the floor in this league, there?s a lot at stake.?

Anyone think Kentucky is gone yet?

Or will they still get in based on name recognition? Without Noel, the record is sub-par.

UNC played their way in, so they're not getting in just based on name anymore.

After last night it is terribly satisfying to know that the pollsters have it right and that the #1 team in the country's signature win is by 1 over Oklahoma State.

Yet even last night we were still hearing that Ohio State didn't have a signature win. I guess that win over a scum team that was about to be #1 before they lost in Columbus wasn't a quality win.

Agreed, was just looking over the schedules of some teams before I came to this thread.. Gonzaga hasnt played a top10 team this season. They are 1 and 2 against top 25 teams including an 11 point loss at home against Illinois. The next best team in their conference is the Gaels who have 5 losses. those loses came to pacific by 10 points, Northern Iowa, and Georgia Tech. Outside of Gonzaga they havent even PLAYED a ranked team this season.

With this in mind it seems St. mary's is good enough to maybe get a 11 seed into the tournament and Gonzaga is probably good enough to be ranked somewhere around 20th. (Best win is against the then 22nd ranked team in the country.)

Well Gtown may have lost its number 1 seed tonight unless they convincingly win the Big East tourney. Gonna be hard to deny us a 1 seed if we run the table bc at least 1 B10 team is gonna get a 1. We will also have to beat at least 2 more top tier teams in B10 tourney (IND Mich St Mich Wisconsin) along the way so lets keep on rolling to a 1 seed!

Whoever wins the NCAA tournament pick'em this year just knows how to guess correctly. This season is just crazy. Miami losing to Georgia Tech at home and UCLA getting blown out by WSU and Iowa State beating Oklahoma State. This season is just crazy.
