2013-14 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

Rutgers transfer Eli Carter headed to Florida

Too bad we're not in on Josh Davis of Tulane. He could solve our "bigs" problem pretty quickly, I'd think.

Agreed. Davis looks like the ultimate "prize" of the graduate transfer recruiting class, with Moser (IMO) coming in second. There are actually quite a few high-scoring guards from smaller schools who are also looking to transfer to a BCS-type school, and definitely not as many big men. That's why someone like Tarik Black is held in such high regard right now.

Tulane transfer Josh Davis expected to take official visits starting next week to San Diego State, Gonzaga & Ohio State, per source.

Premier name in transfers... you can keep the Memphis kid so as we got Davis.

Averaged 17.6 and 10.7 at Tulane. 6'-8" 215 lbs.

Definitely hoping Davis joins OSU's team.

There has been some scheduling news trickling out. Today it was revealed by ND that the other 3 teams in the Gotham Classic are Delaware, North Dakota State and Bryant. OSU will host each of those teams at some point in December most likely. Also, it was reported late last month that OSU will have a home & home with Marquette, first at Marquette next season and then a home game for OSU in 2015.

So OSU's marquee games are now vs. ND in NYC, @ Marquette, and vs. Maryland in the Challenge. I think the Marquette game may be part of the ESPN season tip-off event, but nothing confirmed yet.

It really sucks to see a player with Amir's body size and stature to be as clumsy as he is. Don't get me wrong, he has made some decent headway over the last 2 years but I often ask myself this: Do you really feel confident when Amir has the ball backing down inside the post? With players like Deshaun and Jared, I would feel pretty confident that we would be coming away with points when they had a 1 on 1 inside the post.

This coming year will definitely be a test for our outside shooters simply because only having Amir and Trey Mc run our post game could put heavy pressure on players like Aaron, Sam and Lenny to make shots.

They rarely gave Amir the ball within the course of the offense last year because it was a low-percentage proposition most of the time, even though he takes what is normally considered a high percentage shot. He shot a decent percentage but his point production should have been a couple points higher on average. He did show some slight improvement, but he will need to get a lot better in order to be a viable low-post offensive threat. I am really hoping they can get Josh Davis to transfer in, because he could combine with Ross to be a "small" 4-5 combo similar to what they had going last year when they took off with the frontcourt combo of Q and DT. And when you bring up outside shooters, don't forget about Kam. He could be the next guy they cast in the catch & shoot role, because he has the quickness and shooting ability to be that guy who they run off screens to get open for a jumpshot. Could be another instant offense off the bench guy.

Yes, it sucks that Davis committed to SDSU. He could've been a big piece to the puzzle at OSU. Oh well. Hopefully Matta can find someone else to help at the 5, as they could really use another contributor inside. If he doesn't get anyone else, I'd like to see him go to the Ross-Loving combo for significant minutes as both are 6'8" with really long arms and they are much more skilled players than Amir and Trey.

I'm bummed about this one. The key stat for me on Davis is that he was #8 in the nation in rebounds last year at 10.7 per game. Sure, it was at Tulane, but it's tough to put those numbers up almost anywhere outside of the SWAC.

Hard not to feel disappointed when supposedly OSU was in Davis' final 3 and didn't even get a visit. He does have an unusual game, though, a 6'8" 215# player whose strength is beating opposing defenders off the dribble and scoring in the paint, struggles to defend the post (due to his slight build) against power conference bigs, and can't shoot a jump shot. Still would have liked to have seen what Matta could've done with him, as Matta does an underrated job of bringing out the best in his players and picking on opponents' weaknesses.

One might almost think you were describing David West ...

I've always thought Matta was a much better bench coach than he's given credit for, and this talent-scarce season will give him the chance to prove it. There will likely be at least five teams with equally-good rosters in the league as the Buckeyes, a situation we've not had much of recently. Things likely to change in a big way in 2014, thankfully.
