Play Game 2013 B1G Pick'em (Spread) Pool

Okay, Pickem is installed and set up. Remind me to never again add a feature that has me creating multiple points of information for 126 schools!

Here is a down and dirty guide to get you started. I need guinea pigs, and the clock is ticking anyway as the first game is tomorrow night!

It may help to open Pickem (or this post) in a separate window so that you can follow along as you go.

1. Click on the Pickem tab in the top navbar.

2. Click 'Join Pool' next to the pool of your choice. Currently "2013 Big Ten Pickem" is the only option. We'll add more for the NFL season, and maybe someone will want to do a Top 25... Who knows. Join the pool.

3. Click 'Manage Your Picks' in the navbar, as shown below:

4. You should now see all the available games. Click "Edit Picks" as shown below (there's another Edit Picks link below the games as well):

5. Use the round radio selection points next to each team. Note this is a spread pool, so pay attention to that. The spread ALWAYS refers to the home team, so here we see PSU is favored by 8. I've picked Syracuse, so that means I'm betting that (a) Syracuse wins, OR (b) PSU wins by less than 8. When satisfied (YOU CAN EDIT LATER, AS LONG AS IT'S BEFORE THE GAMES START) click 'Save Picks' as shown below:

6. You should now see something like the following. This is confirmation that you've made your picks (note the checkmarks). When week 2 (and so on) are plugged in, you'll be able to Switch Weeks and make those picks as well. Note that the system tracks overall picking trends. Note that you can edit your picks right up until the start of each game. If you come in late for one, you can still make picks for the rest!

JLB is going to flesh out a real FAQ later, but this is the essential process. It would be a big help if as many of you who are interested head in there ASAP and make picks, so that I know it's all set up properly.

Finally, ALL FCS teams are in the system as FCS Misc Cupcake. I just couldn't make myself go through the creation process for all of those schools, at least not right now. It's on you to look up WHO that team is, if you want to pick carefully. Spreads are an aggregate pulled from ESPiN.

I think that's it, ask any questions below.

NOTE WELL that Indiana State (FCS Misc Cupcake) @ Indiana, UNLV @ Minnesota, and Western Michigan @ Michigan State are all EARLY games that will occur before Saturday. Thursday @ 7pm ET for the first two, Friday at 8pm ET for the latter. Picks for those games (not the rest) are locked at the scheduled start time. The week as a whole is locked at the start time for the last game in the pool, which in this case is Northwestern at California.

This Pickem system may seem a little complicated, only because it allows for multiple pools. It's very well written and conceived though, and gives us a TON of opportunities -- SURVIVOR/KOTH pools are coming!

Also note that like the rest of the site, it's responsive. :) That means you can do everything you need and want from your phones and tablets. Because we love you, that's why.

My plan is to do something (perhaps a banner like those you see for Staff and Mods) for the champions from our various pools. There are also leaderboards and stats within the Pickem structure itself.

Good luck, happy picking! We tried to have something like this coded up on vBulletin years ago, but, ah, it wasn't very good. This is exactly what I wanted.

I figured it out before I read your instructions. And I may be the most technologically illiterate person on the board. So, it really is pretty easy.

I think the part that might throw people off is when there are multiple pools. You join the ones you want to, and then you select the one (the active pool) that you want to view and/or edit. That may take some getting used to, but it's a clever way to allow people to participate in a variety of active pools.

We support straight pick pools, spread (obviously), and points based. King of the Hill/Survivor isn't quite ready yet, but it's coming.

I'm pretty excited about this functionality, I think it will be a lot of fun.
