If the thread title isn't acceptable please feel free to change it. It's just that when discussions about our defense can be in any thread with the names: Shazier, Roby, Bryant, Bennett, Bogard, Burrows, Carter, Bosa, Mitchell, Grant, Griffin, Hale, Spence, Washington, Lewis, Marcus, Murray, Reeves, Bell, Schutt, Sprinkle, and every other name I forgot, it's time to get a thread going.

I won't begin to pretend that I have a clue as to who the starters will be this year. I am pretty sure that the competition will be as fierce as it's been in a long, long, time.

I'm also pretty sure that the bullets will reclaim their position as one of the top defenses in the country.

To rehash the rehash, the entire 2013 season comes down to this: From these 10 players, 2 reasonable starters must be found:

Luke Roberts
Josh Perry
Camren Williams
David Perkins
Jamal Marcus
Curtis Grant
Mike Mitchell
Trey Johnson
Tyquan Lewis
Darron Lee

Meyer says only 1 in 3 players reach their potential. Ten is not statistically significant, but we are looking only only 1 in 5 players needing to reach their potential.

They are all going to be getting so much work, that the biggest risk I see is injury, just like last season.

I think the dline and secondary will sort itself out all by itself. It all comes down to linebacker. Luke Fickell can seize legendary status. The table is set.

I expect to see each candidate audition on the field until November.

Walk on Jake Chestnut is an outside possibility.

Lewis On The Ohio State Staff: ?I've been in contact with the coaches just about every week -- talking to Coach (Everett) Withers and Coach (Mike) Vrabel,? Lewis said. ?They have been telling me how I can come in and make an immediate impact at linebacker. They've just told me to come in prepared and be ready to play.

Will walk ok joe burger factor in at LB as far as depth goes? Not expecting him to start or even be in the 2 deep, but would like to see him in the mix for depth and on special teams.

And pencil me in on having josh perry, camren williams and mike mitchell as having big years and seeing a good amount of pt. 2 may start and 1 will be on the 2 deep, imo

Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier looking for some help: Buckeyes' spring football defensive preview
Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
March 03, 2013
Ohio State's defense

The Buckeyes lost seven starters, including the entire defensive line and two linebackers. Safeties Christian Bryant, C.J. Barnett and Corey "Pittsburgh" Brown should be the only senior starters on this side of the ball. Here's a crack at the two-deep going into Tuesday's first day of spring practice, with starters' names in bold.

DE: Noah Spence, So.; Steve Miller, Jr.

DT: Michael Bennett, Jr.; Tommy Schutt, So.

NT: Joel Hale, Jr.; Chris Carter, So.

DE: Adolphus Washington, So.; Se'Von Pittman, Fr.

WLB: Ryan Shazier, Jr.; David Perkins, So.

MLB: Curtis Grant, Jr.; Camren Williams, So.

SLB: Josh Perry, So.; Jamal Marcus, So.

CB: Bradley Roby, Jr.; Cam Burrows, Fr.

CB: Doran Grant, Jr.; Armani Reeves, So.

S: Christian Bryant, Sr.; Devan Bogard, So.

S: C.J. Barnett, Sr.; Corey Brown, Sr.

Star: Corey Brown, Sr.; Devan Bogard, So.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ryan Shazier needs to leave some time for intros on the first day of Ohio State's spring football practice Tuesday.

?Hey, I'm Ryan, second-leading tackler in the Big Ten last year, first-team All-Big Ten, should be an All-American candidate in the fall as a junior. Who ? are you??

While Shazier obviously knows his teammates, he doesn't know much about playing with them, as he'll be the only returning starter among the front seven from the Buckeyes' 12-0 team from 2012.

Gone are defensive linemen Johnathan Hankins, John Simon, Nathan Williams and Garrett Goebel, and linebackers Etienne Sabino and Zach Boren. For an OSU team that will be the favorite to win the Big Ten now that the one-year NCAA postseason ban is gone, that's a lot to lose and be forced to replace.

?I think with that whole group, it'll be an exciting time,? OSU linebackers coach and defensive coordinator Luke Fickell said on National Signing Day in February, after noting Shazier's lone wolf status. ?I know that I'm excited. I know (defensive like coach Mike) Vrabel is excited. ? It'll be a big spring.?

When the frosh get to campus in the summer, I think the 2 deep could look a little different. Its gonna be hard to keep guys like vonn bell, mike Mitchell, chris worley, michael hill and joey bosa off thw field if some of the upper classmen dont immediately step their game up

The Buckeyes used an unconventional 3-2-6 defensive alignment at times, with Curtis Grant and David Perkins as the linebackers, and Tyvis Powell and Corey Brown as the nickelbacks.
This defense says something. If you ask me (which you did not do), I think it says "we are ahead and you have to pass" (or at least we are ahead on down and distance) and "our secondary is the the strongest part of our team".

To an extent I agree, but a 3-2 dime also gives you the option of sending so many exotic pressures from so many looks that its not even funny. The speed an athletic ability you can have on passing downs, even on the dline - will put added stress on any offensive line.

Given the natural growth of the players expanding on the "limited" scheme from mid-season on, perhaps this is just the next step in implementing a package that Withers and Fickel wanted to do, but couldn't.
