2014 Bahamas basketball

with nothing else but the stat sheet to look at, i'm going to guess that matta will not at all be pleased with tonight's defensive execution and perhaps effort.

First half was complete domination. I don't know what they were really doing in the second half, I started watching Bengals and Reds. The stat sheet might be a bit misleading at the end. Scott and Thompson were unstoppable and the young guys had some good moments, at least from the play by play.

I was able to take in the first game. I really liked the play of Kam Williams, he looks primed for a big year. Bates-Diop looked like the star of the freshman class for OSU in this game, he is tall, long and athletic and he is already one of the best transition players on this team, really good at getting to the basket. Not really the type of game that you might have expected this year from Russell, he played more of a supporting role and always ran the point, not being very aggressive in doing it, either. Dave Bell did not look good, definite redshirt. Trey McDonald got a few easy baskets at the end that kind of inflated his statline. Kind of disappointing that the OSU bigs didn't dominate inside more since the Bahamas team was undersized at every position, like 4 or 5 inches shorter all around. I didn't realize how much Marc Loving struggled shooting the ball this game until I saw the boxscore - yeesh. I wouldn't be surprised if Kam is able to nail down the starting 2-guard spot if he keeps up this pace - anointing Russell as a starter seems premature, although he can be of help for sure with an obvious need for PG help. Lee lost 2 points he should've had because of a travel call when all he did was catch & go up and dunk the ball, the whole OSU bench thought it was an and-1 and the ref called traveling. Russell looked more like a 4-year player in this one, even got a 10-second count against him at one point by being too deliberate in trying to bring the ball up against some modest pressure. Tate had one ugly shot that banked way off the mark but he did show the ability to score through some contact and bring an element of physicality that OSU kind of lacked a year ago. A lot of 2-3 zone D ran by OSU in this one, I guess if they are going to go with a bigger lineup frequently that would make sense, as having a tall & long-armed players at the 3 like Loving and Bates-Diop (plus D'Angelo at the 1 only) would lend itself to a lot of zone D. OSU should have blown this team out but poor FT shooting by the bigs, some bad turnovers/carelessness with the ball, and too many fouls putting the Bahamas team on the line combined to keep it from being a real blowout.

Glad you could get to the game...oh and the Bahamas probably ain't bad either.

Yes, so am I!

A couple other notes, this exhibition game was a more free-flowing game than we are used to out of OSU, that was part of why there was some carelessness with the ball and turnovers that you probably won't see once the real games are being played. You could tell that Russell is still learning how to run the team, perhaps when he gets more comfortable he will be more assertive. Thompson had a highlight reel follow dunk wiped out due to a foul call (probably a good call as a Bahamas player who had been in the paint was knocked to the ground a moment before that). One time a ref called a travel that was so long delayed, it seemed like it should have been on Scott but may have been charged against Kam, because Scott did some stutter steps and passed to Kam, all Kam did was catch and step into his shot which never gets called as a travel in college basketball - but the travel call didn't come until after the shot had already been missed.

I will say, looking back at the boxscore I was surprised that Kam didn't play more minutes. He played well and had an impact on both ends. Lesser players on this team got more minutes in the exhibition, that was probably part of why the margin wasn't greater as well.

From tonight's game, obviously Loving started getting rolling in the second half but there was next to no defense on some of those plays where he scored. Same goes for a couple of Trey's baskets. Thompson lighting it up early on was good to see, he was scorching hot from the perimeter, I think one of his shots he only got credit for a 2 but it was practically a 3, then he cooled off after he got taken out of the game. Started off flushing a lob. Obviously Russell missing this game exposed a weakness of the OSU team, 3rd string PG. Kam Williams is not a PG, he should not be playing in that role on this team & I think one turnover where he couldn't catch the ball and get it up court against a 1-man press pretty much explains why. Russell was sitting there on the bench with everyone else, just didn't get to play and didn't go through pregame warmups really - reports are that he had flu-like symptoms.

Anyway, I liked what I saw of Kam notwithstanding his PG performance. Scott did a good job, really delivered a couple nice assists that I recall, doing all the work to get a basket handed to Trey at one point and Tate at another. The game was played loose at times again in terms of teams not valuing the ball properly and making passes that get intercepted in the backcourt. Honestly, I would be worried that Keita Bates-Diop will eventually overtake me if I"m Marc Loving. I thought Loving struggled in the first half and he also had a poor turnover in the second half driving into traffic and not being able to handle the physicality of the game, he had 19 points which was the team high but it seems like he's the type that can feast on poor defense & can get rolling when he is open in catch & shoot situations. Loving still can't play through contact very well, and needs to be in situations where he doesn't have to create his shot to be effective - he still likely has a sizeable role on this team, but I wouldn't expect him to be leading the team in scoring regularly. Truth be told this Providence Storms team was bigger size-wise compared to yesterday's team but they lacked the same level of scrappiness and skill as the Bahamas All-Stars. Loving and McDonald were left more wide open on some of those shots today than they will be the entire season. But if you bet me that Trey McDonald would score 10+ in both of these games I would've taken that bet and been wrong, he was in the right place at the right time at least. Again a lot of 2-3 zone from OSU on D. I like the activity that Scott, Kam and Tate have in the zone. Tate really gets after it, gotta expect him to find some minutes with that effort - at one point he crashed the offensive glass and jumped in front of Amir for a rebound and ripped it away from him.

Perhaps the biggest concern from these 2 games has been Anthony Lee is nowhere near Q Ross offensively. Lee was just another frontcourt guy out there for OSU, playing the 4 but not really showing any range. The boxscore says Lee fouled out, I was wondering what happened to him since he wasn't in the game late. He got locked up in an arm wrestling match of sorts with an opposing player and it got pretty heated, then he went to the bench. That was right after he got a basket, he was trying to deny position in the mid-post area and got tangled and neither guy wanted to let go. He did play some in he second half but I think he fouled out on a closeout on the perimeter, sending a guy to the line for 3 shots. Lee I'm afraid is going to fall short of what he did at Temple last year (10 & 5 would probably be a good year out of him, 13 and 8 like last year seems unrealistic to me on this team), Temple was really bad last year and they didn't have a lot of good options. Bell again struggled at times, just makes a lot of mistakes out there, and lacks the skill to make up for his mistakes.

Overall I feel good about the team at this point. Bates-Diop, Tate, and Kam look like they are ready to be part of the rotation and make an impact in one way or another. Lee can help out some in the frontcourt, although he's not as good as Q was. Obviously Russell will be in the mix as well to help at PG at least. I have to expect now that Trey will be a regular option in the frontcourt. I believe Scott and Amir are the only for sure starters, due to their unique skills for this team (Scott's pure PG skills and Amir's size). A lot of good options to round out the starting lineup at the 2 & 3, but the 4 is the biggest position of unknown to me, you just don't know what they are going to get from it. If they are going to play mostly zone as it appears, they can play Loving and KBD at SF almost entirely, and then kind of use a 3-man rotation at the 4/5 with Lee, Amir and Trey (with Trey and Lee both capable of subbing in at the 4 & 5 at times depending on matchups). I still wouldn't be surprised to see them go with Loving at the 4 at times, though, and KBD might be there in a small lineup as well. But if they are indeed switching to being a primarily zone team, length and size will be a priority and so I can see them going big at the 3-5 spots for the most part if that will be the case.

Great insight and analysis.

I know Fall Practice has kicked off, but I still love reading about the basketball Bucks. Even if it's pre-pre-season, still would have been nice to catch a glimpse of the team this early on. Lucky we have someone here that was able to get that opportunity and share it. Thanks for the thoughts and safe travels!

Tate is trying to be a perimeter player, his shot isn't there yet in games but he did well in pregame drills. He can handle it well enough for his position but he panicked once while trying to get the ball to Scott after taking it past half court and threw it away. I think it will take him a year before he will be a solid 3 point shooter but he should get there eventually. But he can still help this year since he can bring elements of toughness, energy and effort that this team needs.

DZ, thanks for taking the time to post your observances. Have there been any reports from the staff post trip? We heard them say a few things prior to the trip and was curious what they thought of player performances and maybe if they have a feel for starters and rotation for the upcoming season.

On Tate, I think he's somewhere between Lighty and Jason Singleton. I still think Paul Harris from SU is a good comparison as someone who was stocky player, with good athletecism who had some guard skills, but played the game more like an undersized combo forward. Cornley was a C coming out of HS and was pretty much an undersized C in college, but did expand his face up game late in his career to where he was a legit PF. Lighty played a lot of PG his senior year in HS and came into college as a SG. He grew into his jack of all trades role and from measurements looks like he was about 2 inches taller than Tate. I think Tates game is pretty close to that of a college SF at this point even if a bit undersized for that position (passes pretty well, shot is a work in progress and is left hand dominiant with the dribble). I think he's mostly going to play the SF here, could get a little time at the PF and SG positions, depending on matchups. MIght be a guy who would benefit from us playing some zone D as I don't think he's quick enough to stay with 2G's and some 3's and not really big enough to defend the 4.
