Did you notice the jack ass and letters DAP on the silks on the jockey riding California Chrome?

California Chrome, ridden by Victor Espinoza, crosses the finish line to win.

So who’s the dumb ass now?

Mocked for buying a supposedly worthless mare for $8,000, co-owners Steve Coburn and Perry Martin laughed all the way to the winner’s circle after California Chrome won Saturday’s $2 million Kentucky Derby by a length and three-quarters over Commanding Curve before a packed house of 164,906 at Churchill Downs, the second-largest Derby crowd of all time.

Coburn, who celebrated his 61st birthday on Saturday, dreamed that California Chrome was going to win the Derby before the chestnut colt was foaled on Feb. 18, 2011, out of the mare Love That Chase, whom he and Martin bought for $8,000 in 2008.

Someone at that sale said only a dumb ass would spend $8,000 for Love That Chase, a Maryland-bred who won one of six career starts, and hence that’s how “Dumbass Partners,” or “DAP,” was formed, racing in purple and green silks with the picture of a bucktoothed jackass on the back.

Coburn’s dream doesn’t end with the Kentucky Derby.

“I believe this horse will win the Triple Crown,” he said. “If I shed a tear, just bear with me. This colt was born on my sister Brenda’s birthday. She died of cancer at the age of 36. It will be 36 years this year since there’s been a Triple Crown. That’s where we’re going.”
