Who's Next?

It's understandable with the History of RB at tOSU why this is such a discussed topic. I believe it deserves it's own thread. Looking at individual threads it seems like the whispers have already begun for 2014.
With the talent that seems to be competing for carries in the 2014 season will come the demands for "your guy" to get carries. So state your case for Rod to get carries over Dunn, and Dunn to get carries over Zeke, and Zeke to get carries over Wilson here in this thread.

I'm no expert, but I think that Elliot's going to be special and that he will be the main ball carrier next season. No knock on the others: My eyes just say that Elliot has power, speed, balance, elusiveness, and vision and that the others don't have as much of the last three characteristics. Dontre will do more of the same things he does this year from two-back sets, but I also think we'll see him used a little bit in the vertical game with slants from the slot and the occasional inside hand off.

Im in agreement with jagdaddy, I see EzE getting a bulk of carries because hes our best blend of speed and power. I can see dontre being his backup and change of pace, and rod and brionte fighting over the power RB role. I feel bad that we hear good things about Ball yearly, and the season starts and he's lost in the shuffle, yet he's also very talented and could start for most of the Big 10 teams. The same goes for Rod smith, who has looked like a physical specimen from day one, but whether it be fumbling, or not grasping the play book, etc, can't get it all together to be dependent on carrying a team that's trying to win an NC. The starting RB will need to be every much as an important leader as braxton(or whoever is the QB, I'm expecting Braxton back though), and also able to bring it in tough situations when the passing game is stalling.
Dontre could also be used more in the receiving game as well, losing some of his carries but Curtis Samuel and parris Campbell essentially play exactly like Wilson, IMO and could be eased into the offense next year like Wilson is this year.
Great amount of depth for the foreseeable future. I wouldn't be worried about a drop off in production due to injury or garage minutes from this group.

From where we sit now this is the obvious call. But Urban is an impressive motivator. One of the other options could go home this summer and work themselves into a beast. In any case, our best option next year will be no worse than an improved Elliot.

And I am far from done with Dunn. I have yet to see evidence that his lack of PT is related to inability to perform.

Nor do I see Wilson competing for carries with Elliot or any of the other big backs. He is a different species. Jalin Marshall might enter into that conversation.

Rarely have I seen such depth of talent in a backfield - and never from our own sideline.

Would not be at all surprised to see a little attrition this off season. It's a good problem to have, with so many good backs, but with the talented frosh coming in, it makes a crowded bench even crowdeder. :)

I hope everyone stays and works their tails off and gives us depth, but if the past is any indicator, one or two will seek PT else ware.

You have said nothing wrong here as far as I can tell, and I mean the entire post. When it comes to the bold I couldn't agree more. The difference between a Heisman first round pick and a 4th string insurance salesman could be one fumble, one class missed, one ankle injury, or even one bad decision at a bar, or in a car, after 11pm.

You can use Carlos as an example of that. Luckily he was able to get his season back on track with the Wisconsin game(yes he played against FAMU but you can't really count that game). He literally took the position back with that game and the NW game, because it was honestly Halls to lose, and he didn't lose it as much as Carlos just outplayed him, which says a lot because Jordan was playing his ass off in his own right. Carlos could've been pushed down the depth chart, and refused to let it happen. Not many players cAn say the same, speaks a lot about the kid. Competition will be fierce, in the future, especially with the coaches constantly letting the players know theyre recruiting a player to replace them, and not redshirt. Makes them have to step their games up

I see EzE taking over. I love all of our RBs and think we have serious talent there, but EzE just has all the tools to be a 15-20 carry back next year. I still see Smith getting plenty of action, with Dunn and Ball fighting for a carry here and there. Plus Dontre is going to get plenty of touches too. Way too early to tell of course with attrition (injuries or transfers, hopefully neither), off season workouts, and spring/summer. And of course there are always some major leaps in bowl practices. It will be fun to watch either way.

No and yes. IMO Carlos was always the starting RB. If I put on my homer hat right now I can honestly tell you that if Carlos starts the first three games, he's looking back at 1000. He would have done it against PSU confirming that they are a rivalry. You just can't replace a guy that does nothing but gain yardage every time he gets his hands on the ball.

He would have done it against PSU confirming that they are a rivalry. You just can't replace a guy that does nothing but gain yardage every time he gets his hands on the ball.

IMO.

I don't think with coach urban, we can assume that after the suspension, the starting RB was Carlos' to lose. Especially with all the talk about his love of competition, it'd be hard for me to believe that anything is given to you on this team, especially a starting position. But I do have to agree that IF he were playing in all the games, he'd be at or close to 1000yds and in heisman consideration.
But with regards to a guy doing nothing but gaining yardage, the same can be said about hall as well. Whenever he gets the ball, he just gets yards as well. No drop off whatsoever between the 2, which can't be said by many teams in the country.

I'm hoping Dunn wins the spot as the #1 big back when Hyde moves on to the NFL.
