Game Thread 2015 National Championship Game: (2) Oregon vs. (4) Ohio State, Jan 12th @ 8:30p ET, ESPN

I keep seeing this and scratching my head. Yes, we gave up a lot of yards but that means very little. They were trying to catch up most of the second half, so they were throwing the ball a lot, right?
FSU was playing catch up because they were sloppy with the football, which they have been all year.

Cook ran for a first down to the 31 and fumbled. Instead of driving to take the lead 20-13 or kick a FG with their great kicker, they surrendered all of that late momentum. Kudos to Oregon for taking it.

Oregon scores quickly, which is why they're deadly and a far cry from the mediocrity that hung around with FSU all year during the regular season.

Down 12, they drive for a TD. Oregon answers with their own.

Down 12 again, they again reach oregon territory, pick up a first down, and fumble with the freshman. Now the game is getting out of control as Oregon drives for another quick TD. Now it's a 19 pt game, their best RB can't be trusted, and the flood gates open.

Jameis gets to the 40 and goes for a hilarious signature end to his career, with the banana peel lateral to no one for an easy TD for Oregon.

FSU had 272 at halftime.

They had 429 yds midway through the 3rd quarter when Dalvin Cook started fumbling.
The only statistic that matters is the final score.
Absolutely, but we are looking for flaws to project the outcome against a better offense and more efficient team.
I have been having this same conversation with a few Duck fans, as well, who haven't been happy with our new D-Coordinator this year. In a perfect world there'd be complete domination. But it doesn't work that way when your offense is only possessing the ball about 20 minutes per game. The stat that really matters is that we're only giving up slightly under 18.00 points per game over the last 7 games, including the FSU game.
I think that keeps it from being a shut down defense. I don't think it keeps it from being a good defense, but those are nearly extinct these days.
Also, it's not like Florida State just dropped the ball on those turnovers. Oregon defenders took the ball away, knocked it out of their hands and recovered it, tipped a ball and allowed a defender to intercept in and straight up recovered another bonehead fumble. The Ducks had a hand in 4 of those turnovers that were more like "takeaways". The only "gimmee" was the fumble by Winston that we returned for a TD.
Agreed. They were great plays by the defense. The natural thought by buckeye fans is whether a horse like Elliott will give up the ball as easily as Cook.
We're very respectful unless treated otherwise. We've had several fans from opposing teams visit and had some great experiences. There were a few jerks, who were ejected immediately, but it's usually been pretty casual. Of course, there are Oregon fans that are idiots, too, that make us all look bad. If any jerks from our clan show up and start trouble feel free to kick them to the curb. We don't appreciate people like that either.
Which board(s) would you recommend? For instance, I work for the OSU scout site taking photographs but would never EVER visit hineygate. It's horrendous.
Finally, the past is just that, the past. You can pretty much throw that last game out the window. The game we played in the 2010 Rose Bowl will have little if any impact on this game. We have a few freshman that redshirted that year still on the roster, but about 98% of those players are gone and we both have new head coaches, new defensive coordinators and we have a new offensive coordinator. That game is pretty much moot.
Agreed.
One thing I will say about that is we were just beginning to find our way back then and you guys were already a national brand. We're on a lot more level playing field now nationally (excuse the pun) than we were back then, having made the playoffs this year and going to 4 BCS Bowls in the previous 5 years, including a national championship game.
Yep, your brand is finally reaching the top, while OSU's is being built back up. Most would tell you we're a year ahead of schedule but playing above that for now!

I would like to know more about what has made Oregon so successful this year, and what defenses they've done it against. Also...is Mariota the fastest QB we've played this year?
I don't know, Zander Diamont looked pretty quick on his scamper in the IU game. :smash:

This is honestly my biggest nightmare for the game, Mariota running wild. If Curtis Grant and Tyvis Powell take some of their usual angles, he will pop some LONG runs.

Gotta find a way to clog running lanes with discipline on the DLine. Keep things in front. Negative plays and keeping Oregon "behind schedule" are huge for beating them (obvious statement is obvious, we all know this).

Mariota gets the ball out of his hands really quick. Do Bosa and co. have a chance to sack him in this game?

Kind of expect them to play contain more than going for the sack, only to have him take off for large chunks.

Again, the yards allowed is deceiving since the Ducks have only trailed a couple times all year. Most teams have had to play from significant deficits. That means they had no choice but to throw the ball a lot. Does it really matter if you give up another 200-300 yards if you're winning by 35 points in the second half? No, it really doesn't.

And the 272 yards in the first half?
Considering the defenses Ohio State has faced, there is nothing that worries me about Oregon's. The only thing that worries me is how sloppy our offense+punt returns have been at times.
That said, there's quite a bit that concerns me with Oregon's offense.
I thought Bama would be a first-to-40 kind of game, this seems more like a first-to-50. I like our defense' chances to get a few more stops though.

Joe, a note of warning: many on this site consider Herby a turncoat because he doesn't slobber all over the Buckeyes on ESPN.

I think that's a bit harsh. Spielman doesn't slobber all over Ohio State, and he's easily the favorite (because he provides interesting commentary instead of canned cliches). Galloway has kept low-key until the Sugar Bowl after-show. Robert Smith definitely shows his colors. I don't watch enough NFL to get a read on Cris.

Frosty Tips gets a hard time because he sucks off the SEC, takes any position, spouts absolute nonsense, wears scUM apparel, piles on when we're bad, but then tries to play both sides of the fence -- he'll jump on the bandwagon, but he's also first to wind up the ESPiN narratives. And he seemed to always be at odds with the program during the Tressel years, actively stirring pots just for the media clicks.
It's no mistake a lot of other fanbases consider him an Ohio State homer (he yucks it up when they're good), while most Ohio State fans see him as a douchebag.

No, we consider him to be a shill for ESPiN, who is angry because we won't rewrite history and pay homage to him as a former OSU great, as ESPiN was attempting prior to his attacks on Ohio State. Given his very modest accomplishments at Ohio State, which included a "best win" tie against TSUN, such a rewrite was not possible.

We do not forget his jumping on the Clarett bandwagon, repetitive comments about how he wouldn't send his son to Ohio State, and even false claims about Ohio State players for which he still needs to apologize.

No, for most of the folks here, the cold reception has nothing to do with Herbstreit's views on football but rather what he has done to try to damage the Ohio State program and its potential to attract top recruits. Look at his comments earlier this year about how no B1G team deserved a place in the CFP or how Ohio State would lose by a wide margin to Alabama etc.;

While I agree with those points, I take a somewhat different tack on this.

When I examine Herbstreit's performance as a sports commentator, I find that he does an excellent job in the appearance department, working well with what he has, enhancing his performance with consistently frosted tips and artificial tanning workouts. However, he fails in the most important aspects. He doesn't pass really pass the eyeball test on the field. He fails to show speed. He is rather static, frequently getting outplayed on important downs by Corso, and he doesn't play well in space.

Are there any real coaches/experts out there that can give unbiased opinion of the matchups for this game? The last few pages of this discussion are not very informative.
Kind of hard to give even a slightly unbiased opinion on a fan site of one of the specific teams. However, if I have time during work (I should), I will try to provide something after doing research.

To the Oregon fans here who are tired of the Duck Hunt theme. We apologize, but there was no way to avoid it when the QB's nickname is 12 Gauge.

I don't apologize for anything. Oregon doesn't know dick about common hate themes. Let me know when they catch up to the likes of "Suckeyes" and then deal with all the "Urban Liar" -- "O$U" -- "SEC SPEED!" etc. etc. etc. to boot. This duck hunt thing is extremely recent by comparison. So... 12 GAUGE, BABY! BUCK, BUCK, BUCK!

But in all seriousness, I hope more Duck fans jump on board to talk about the game and don't try to wait for us to lose before doing so. I can't stand that crap. If you're going to troll, be here to do it ahead of time so you can take your lumps if you lose.

Stats for Dummies.
http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/24
Note how many top rushing defenses we faced this year! MSU, Penn State, Alabama, Michigan, Wisconsin.
Compare that to how many Oregon faced tis year.(including MSU, who they beat at home) Stanford, MSU, Washington. Florida State does not make the top 50!
Arguably, we faced the top rushing defenses in the country. And we were able to run on every one including VaTech.

Look at Total Defense. http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/22
Where's Oregon?
Not in the Top 50.

Seriously, fan site aside, where have you ever found a totally unbiased opinion of sports/politics, whatever as "we" all look at any subject from are own experiences/perspective/biases. It's the nature of the beast that in order to be fully knowledgeable re: any subject, you first have to have had an innate interest that invariably started from your own background/surroundings ie prejudices/biases.

Even Vegas odds are more about the bottom line, than astute football analysis. When you think about unbiased opinions, you think of scientists and even they can't agree on everything ie climate change, etc.

My analysis: Since the talent level of both teams "appears" to be equal, tell me which team will be more focused/motivated on game day and I'll tell you who's gonna win. This is why predictions after a (4) week layoff is usually a crapshoot.

Edit: And this is why Meyer and Saban are such good coaches ~ focus/motivation ... oh, and they usually have the best players/talent! :urban2:

We now return you to the x's & o's analysis of the game ...
