2015 NCAA Basketball Tournament Discussion

Now that Gonzaga reminded us they're Gonzaga I'm going B1G next weekend. I have ZERO interest in Kentucky-Duke no matter how much the sheeple and CBS would drool over it. :excited:

Amazing turn around for Michigan State this year the game they beat Ohio State was the catapult to their season they were considered on the bubble before that game and they went on a run.

Forbes played for Cleveland State last year he had a huge impact on this game. I thought Cleveland State could have made the NCAA tournament this year if Forbes had stayed.
Why did not Forbes have to sit out a year:huh: He is a pretty good player but let us not bring Cleveland State into the conversation.

At the beginning of the season I was in the camp that no NCAA team would beat Kentucky. Having watched a few teams take them to the horn, I'm not sure whether I should repent of that or double down on it. On the one hand, when you allow a team a potential game-winning shot, you are, obviously, beatable. On the other, when several teams have had that opportunity, but failed, you start to wonder if these guys will ever crack.

I sense that they have to play less than their best to let a team be close. They put me in mind of a team that can flip a switch when they need to. They were smart enough to go to Towns over and over again to keep up with ND, but they still needed a couple of big 3's. The Irish showed that you can negate some of their defensive strengths by spreading the floor and bringing the big guys out. They also hit a ton of shots against Ky - and still it wasn't enough. Ky's depth gives them an upper hand in the final minutes of a game. Their players aren't tired. Their length gives them a big advantage in making it difficult to make shots against them.

But I haven't figured out whether the game with ND, and the other teams that have played them close, makes it more or less likely they will lose next weekend. It seems like they are comfortable if they have to win a tight game down the stretch because they have done it. It's going to be fun for me to watch the other teams try to knock them off. We are going to see history made. Either we will have an all time upset or a 40-0 national champion. Gotta watch to see which it is.

NCAA Women's tourny
Pretty impressive work by selection committee
Final 8 represented 4 #1s and 3 #2s
Final Four is all #1 seeds

Men's side is pretty impressive too
Final Four has 3 #1 seeds and MSU

I am not going to downplay what Kentucky has done thus far. 38-0 is impressive no matter how you look at it. To win 38 in a row in this college basketball environment is special.

However, I am not sure that Kentucky will have faced any team yet this season all that close to Wisconsin in terms of talent, coaching, and execution. Same with Duke, and to a lesser degree Sparty (based on the way they have played their last 10 games of the season). Kentucky's best out of conference wins this season were against North Carolina (very good win, but UNC had several stretches during the year where they were not very good), Louisville (a team that really struggles to score), UCLA (need I say more?), Texas (see UCLA), and a vastly overrated Kansas team, in my opinion. Now, each of those teams when playing well is a good opponent, but Wisconsin or Duke they are not.

Kentucky will now face up against a team that is not intimidated by them, and who believes they will win. I am not sure they've been in this situation yet. Both Wisconsin and Duke will spread them out, force them to defend 1-on-1, and punish them when help defense arrives. I think we're in for a treat on Saturday watching this Kentucky defense try to defend the Badgers. IF they survive, it should be more of the same on Monday, provided Duke beats MSU.

I don't see a team beating UK with a last second shot. Their length and athleticism make them so good defensively, and it's even tougher when they know exactly what you have to try to do. They can force you wide when you dribble up the court, wasting time and taking you away from the rim. They can get their hands on long passes. They can alter and block shots and don't have to sell out or foul to do it. You can hardly expect to put up an early shot and score on a putback either. If Kentucky is to lose at the last second, it's going to have to be them being forced to take the final shot and (hopefully) missing.

Man could win $1M if MSU wins it all

Almost every day, Derek Stevens likes to stop at the sportsbook at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino, located between the two properties he owns, to plunk down a bet.

On Dec. 5, Stevens walked in and told sportsbook director Tony Miller that he wanted to make a bet on Michigan State to win it all and to make sure that if he did win, he'd win $1 million.

Despite Stevens' being a regular customer, Miller's sportsbook doesn't accept bets that could cause such a colossal loss, so he called up his boss, Tilman Fertitta, who owns the Golden Nugget, to approve the bet.

It was a relatively smooth conversation. The Spartans were at 50-1 to win it all at the time, having just lost their third game of the young, eight-game season to Notre Dame.

So Miller accepted Stevens' $20,000 bet, never thinking he'd be sweating the possibility that the Spartans could pull it off.

"In my nine years at this sportsbook, I never accepted a bet that could result in us paying $1 million," Miller said. "The most I've ever seen won here was a $100,000 parlay."

Not unusual for the women's #1 seeds to get there given they start off playing actual home games in the tourney. In both cases #1 seeds are given the easiest road (based on all seedings) so shouldn't the outcome depicted above be the norm rather than the exception?

I wouldn't bet 20K now on MSU to win, it was insane to do it in December. He will lose this bet.

In the post-game after Ohio State thumped Oregon, our fellow-Ohioan (or traitor depending on how you view him), Des Howard said, "I could kick myself. I know that at its core, football is a physical game, and the bigger, stronger, more physical team usually wins." Des picked Oregon, and we all know why: he didn't want Ohio State to win, so he manufactured reasons why Oregon would win and ignored the big reason why they wouldn't.

I'm going to bring that principle over to this Final Four. A lot of us don't want Ky to win, and we may be doing the same thing. At its core, basketball is a game where the bigger, deeper, more talented team usually wins - and we all know who that is.

It's too bad for Wisconsin that they weren't on the other side of the bracket. I think they would have a better chance against Ky if Ky had a day to prepare. I have a feeling Cal is down there getting their minds right, and scheming about how to stop Wisky's offense. If they play well, I think they win by 10 or more. If they do get beat, it will be to Duke in the championship. I don't think Sparty has enough to handle the 9 Ky puts out there, but Duke may.

It took some fortunate foul calls last year for KY to beat Wiscy, in the exact same situation.
