2016 Fall Camp Discussion

One of the, many, things I like about the Meyer era is that you can honestly get a feel for what's going on inside the program by his public comments.

I read him at this point as confirming that there is a metric shit ton of talent on hand and it is specifically dangerous in the area of speed. He's also saying that youth is a wicked bitch and it's up to him and his coaches to get them ready to unleash hell.

I will take a blind bet 100 times out of 100 if you tell me that all that stands between success an failure is the coaching prowess of Urban Meyer and his staff.

I get to bet on Urban, you have to bet against him.

URBAN MEYER BRACING FOR ENTIRELY DIFFERENT TRAINING CAMP AT OHIO STATE IN 2016

72614_h.jpg,qitok=PK2LTsRE.pagespeed.ce.O_WX_Abtd0.jpg

If one of Urban Meyer's assistants walked into his office recently with a question, there is a good chance they will see their boss' eyes honed in on one specific detail.

"I have never spent this much time on practice schedules. People laugh at me, I stare at that board around two hours a day," Meyer said last week at Big Ten Media Days. "Every practice I've probably gone over five, six, seven times."

Meyer is as obsessed with perfection when it comes to his football program — that isn't news. But as he looks at what he has in front of him ahead of Saturday's report date for fall camp, it is much different than a year ago.

"I haven't really gotten in great details with Mick (Marotti) yet, but we are not a ready-made machine to be," Meyer said. "It might happen later in two-a-days."

Ohio State's strength coach is responsible for feeling the pulse of the team, preparing it in the weight room for camp, then handing it to Meyer when players report.

Marotti told both Meyer and quarterback J.T. Barrett Ohio State's development through spring and summer workouts was "not bad." It could be better, but also could be worse. Either way, it is significant contrast than in 2015 when the Buckeyes entered with a loaded roster coming off a national championship.

"That means that I guess we weren't good enough to say 'good' and didn't say 'great,'" Barrett said at Big Ten Media Days. "We're just progressing. I don't think there's been any regressing in what we're doing so we're progressing each and every day, but know that we have some ways to go since he said 'not bad.'"

The amount of names listed as being in the mix for the "open" spots at starter are hilarious. Pretty sure I saw my grandma and crazy uncle Larry listed.

As much as I enjoy years like last year when you have tons of first round talent returning, I get even more anxious on years like this year where there is so much up in the air. You know we have tons and tons of talent from all of Urban's recruiting efforts, just a matter of developing it and getting a pecking order. It's going to be really fun to hear the fall camp updates this year.

That is a crazy amount of talented guys vying for spots. The names that jump out at me are Dixon, Clark, and McLaurin at WR. I think (hope) that given the opportunity that at least one of those pretty highly touted recruits will have a breakout season. I can just remember alot of excitement and high expectations when these guys were recruited.

Funny because the WR I think makes the biggest splash as a previous unknown is actually KJ Hill.

Clearly from a player standpoint this is J.T.'s team. No surprise but other captains weren't even listed, maybe because of the 2 deep questions around them

11 QUESTIONS SURROUNDING OHIO STATE AS IT PREPARES TO ENTER FALL CAMP

72658_h.jpg

With 16 starters gone, there are plenty of new faces on Ohio State's football team as the Buckeyes prepare to enter fall training camp Sunday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Because of that, there are plenty of question marks surrounding Urban Meyer's team as he prepares for his fifth season at the helm in Columbus. Here are 11 of the most burning questions surrounding Ohio State this season as it gets ready for fall camp.

1. WILL J.T. BARRETT RETURN TO HIS 2014 FORM?
He has to for Ohio State to be successful. After a redshirt freshman season in which Barrett finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting, the Wichita Falls, Texas native struggled to find his footing early in the 2015 season as he served as Cardale Jones' backup. After the Buckeyes' loss to Michigan State, Barrett looked to be himself again over the final two games of the season in wins against Michigan and Notre Dame. Ohio State needs that J.T. Barrett to contend in the Big Ten in 2016.

2. HOW WILL THE OFFENSIVE LINE HANDLE ITS OVERHAUL?
Pat Elflein and Billy Price return, but the Buckeyes' offensive line will feature three new starters in 2016. One of those will be junior Jamarco Jones, who Meyer named the starting left tackle in spring practice. Ohio State still needs to solidify the other two starting spots in fall camp and then build cohesion within the unit before the Sept. 3 opener against Bowling Green. The Buckeyes underwent a similar overhaul in 2014 when they had to replace four starters up front. That year, in a Week 2 loss to Virginia Tech, Ohio State's offensive line allowed seven sacks.

3. WHO EMERGES AT WIDE RECEIVER?
Michael Thomas, Jalin Marshall and Braxton Miller all moved on to the NFL so the Buckeyes must figure out a way to replace their top three wide receivers from the 2015 season. Noah Brown, who missed all of last season with a broken leg, has high expectations and is a player Meyer said can be "All-Big Ten caliber," but beyond that, it's anybody's guess as to who steps up. Ohio State certainly isn't lacking for talent, however, as there are a number of options who could emerge as solid contributors alongside Brown: Corey Smith, Parris Campbell, Curtis Samuel [to an extent], and Terry McLaurin just to name a few.

4. CAN MIKE WEBER BECOME 'THE GUY' AT RUNNING BACK?
With Bri'onte Dunn's dismissal, Weber is the likely candidate to earn the bulk of the carries this season for the Buckeyes. Samuel will also carry the ball out of the backfield some, but at Ohio State, Meyer has shown he prefers to have a bell cow running back like Carlos Hyde or Ezekiel Elliott over the last few years. There's a lot of pressure on Weber to become 'the guy' out of the Buckeyes' backfield, but the redshirt freshman from Detroit certainly has all kinds of talent.
